Luxurious Weddings up in Baghdad

There are many ways to measure progress in Iraq. Most of them tend to involve unpleasant and horrifying metrics, with the goal to keep them as low as possible. But, every now and then, it's possible to find something to celebrate. These days, it's an increase in upscale Iraqi weddings. More than mere nuptials, the country has seen a spike in elaborate and well attended ceremonies.

During the week following Ramadan, a holiday called Eid al-Fitr, approximately 630 couples tied the knot in Baghdad's six most luxurious hotels, according to the Tourism and Antiques Ministry. This rivals the number of weddings at these hotels conducted in both July and August.

In past years, the high volume of weddings, particularly during Eid, wouldn't have been possible, as potential celebrants would have feared insurgent attacks, suicide bombers and other threats to safety. Though precise data isn't available, September is estimated to be the busiest wedding month since the war began in 2003.

auction at celebration
The Disney-planned community of Celebration, Florida is the latest site of a condominium auction. The picture-perfect town seeks to replicate an idealized slice of small town American life but like most Florida towns it has become a victim of the real estate crisis. Now 27 condominium homes in the Artisan Park complex at Celebration which were once listed from prices of $480,000 to $600,000 will be auctioned off with suggested opening bid of just $95,000. The auction starts at 10 a.m on August 1 at the Celebration Hotel. Some units have a waterfront view and the complex includes a clubhouse with a swimming pool, cabana and restaurants all amid Celebration's cookie-cutter perfection.

Amai Champagne Brownies

Amai is a relatively young bakery based in New York that specializes in brownies and other treats made from scratch with all-natural, high quality ingredients. Their flavors tend towards indulgent, but slightly unusual, combinations, such as Luscious Lychee and Mandarin [Orange] Dreams brownies. Slightly less exotic but ideal for the celebratory spirit of the season are Amai's Champagne Brownies. Sold in boxes of four or eight, the dark chocolate brownies have an intense flavor and are topped with a fine champagne glaze, in addition to having a subtle taste of champagne from the sparkling wine mixed into the batter. The 8-brownie pack is $42.

Forbes has just selected their picks for the top luxury honeymoons. Of course, some of these picks are quite a bit more costly than the average honeymoon  -  we refuse to use the phrase "moneymoon" -  but are well worth it. The most luxurious stays include:

Anse Chastanet on Santa Lucia is in one of the Caribbean's most breathtaking locations, with over 600-acres of lush garden, tropical flora and gorgeous beaches.
