Most Expensive CD Isn't About the Music

The latest random object to get plated in platinum and studded with diamonds is, of all things, a CD case. Displayed in Tokyo the CD is called simply "Woman, Sweet 10 Diamonds," and features a case of platinum with 10 2-carat diamonds embedded on the front. The CD case was created through a collaboration between Universal Music and Japanese jeweler Nagahori and is valued at $100,000.

And apparently the actual music on the CD is of little importance, since it's only ever referred to very generally as "18 songs by female vocalists." Wow.

Marantz Gold SA-7S1 CD Player

With electronics usually sporting black or silver color schemes, this gold SA-&S1 CD player from Marantz is setting itself apart with an appealing gold finish. It's not super shiny and it doesn't look like it's trying too hard, but is still gold, which is interesting. Put that with features like little to no sound-degrading vibrations, protection against electrical interference, and micro-precision metals making for an exceptionally clean data read-out, and it's a nice piece of electronics.

It's a good looking seemingly well-made CD player, but I don't know about paying $10,000 for it? Unless that's real gold used in the finish, then maybe...

ObliqSound Remixes Vol. 2, Limited Edition

The ObliqSound Remixes Vol. 2 double CD features the works of a number of artists, including Tama Waipara, Tony Devivo and Grand Pianoramax, but the main thing that makes it interesting is that the CD packaging was designed by Karim Rashid. Its release marks the designer's first foray into this particular area of design. It was produced with the help of Brazilian footwear manufacturer, Melissa, and is made out of the same "jelly" material that they use for many of their shoes. Only 2,000 units total will be available. Price: $50.

CL Sound Machine

It's hard to say whether the CL Sound Machine is practical, or simply overkill, so I'll let you be the judge. It is a combination iPod docking station, record player, cd player and... wine rack? The triple format audio system is a fantastic idea. Not only does it give you the really interesting, old-fashioned look of a phonograph and the practical ability to play more modern forms of music, but it also allows you to relive some of the classics from the record collection that has been gathering dust in the back of your closet. The question is, is the wine rack necessary? If you have the room and money for this gadget (pricing available upon request), the chances are good that you're going to be able to keep the 12-bottles of wine that the CL holds in another location.
