Girard-Perregaux Cat's Eye Tourbillon Haute Joaillerie Watch

Filed under: Jewelry, Timepieces / Watches

For half a million dollars you can get a lot of watches or this lovely new high jewelry watch from Swiss Girard-Perregaux. The Cat's Eye Tourbillon Haute Joaillerie timepiece has an 18k white gold case and is 32mm wide by 38mm tall in the typical Cat's Eye oval shape. It has a stunning amount of large diamonds all over it. According to Girard-Perregaux the watch required over 700 hours of work to create, containing over 20 carats of diamonds. The precious stones come in various cuts and are placed all over the case, crown, and dial.

Inside the watch is a Girard-Perregaux in-house made caliber GP09700-0006 manually wound tourbillon movement. The Tourbillon escapement is visible on the dial using a traditional GP style bridge. The movement has a power reserve of about three days. Attached to the strap is a gray satin strap with a white gold buckle... and more diamonds. Price for this very impressive haute joaillerie watch is $490,000.

Girard-Perregaux Cat's Eyes Watch For 2011

Next year will see Girard-Perregaux releasing this new version of their acclaimed Cat's Eye watch collection for women. On the trend of simplicity, this upcoming model has a more simple in-house made Girard-Perregaux Caliber GP3300 automatic mechanical movement with the time, date, and subsidiary seconds dial. For the most part this watch is simply another flavor in a long standing collection. The oval-shaped case is the "cat's eye" and it is 35.40mm wide in 18k pink or white gold. The bezel is lined with 62 diamonds, with more diamonds used on the dial for hour markers. The dials are very lovely mother-of-pearl plates in either 'dark' or natural. The watch strap is alligator. While this is an aging woman's watch collection, the pieces are classic, and always feel good.

Girard Perregaux Cat's Eye Annual and Zodiac Calendar Watch

Filed under: Jewelry, Timepieces / Watches

Don't be surprised to see this watch on someone who asks, "what's your sign?" Girard Perregaux took the logical next step in women's annual calendar watches and added a zodiac indicator in the Cat's Eye Annual and Zodiac Calendar timepiece. Girard Perregaux uses the beautiful oblong case and mother of pearl dial used in the Cat's Eye watch line and inserts a Girard-Perregaux GP033M0 automatic mechanical movement to display the time with small seconds), date, month, zodiac, and moonphase. It's a lot of information in the 35.25mm wide by 30.25mm tall case, all packed in neatly.

Crafted in 18k gold (white or pink), the oval case has a bezel that is set with 68 diamonds equaling about 0.68 carats. The dial is a carefully cut piece of mother of pearl (light or dark) with either pink or white gold hands, hour indexes, and other dial settings. Another diamond is placed on the face near the four o'clock position to appear like a star. Due to the oval shape of the case, the rear of the watch is attached via four screws, and is set with a see through sapphire crystal with a view into the movement.

I am particularly fond of horizontally oriented oval cases such as the one used here because they tend to flatter the wrist much more than a vertically oriented oval case (often done in tonneau shape). Horizontal watch case orientations seem to elongate the wrist visually and appear more graceful. With a clever calendar system and beautiful design, the Cat's Eye Annual and Zodiac Calendar is a fine addition to Girard Perregaux's women's watch line.
