Sunreef Unveils 131-foot Power Catamaran Megayacht

Buyers as well as designers of motor yachts of any size face a difficult decision: make the boat too wide and it will suffer from poor performance on the water. Make it too narrow, on the other hand, and it won't have much room inside. Perhaps the ultimate solution is the catamaran.

With two hulls, a catamaran can slice through the water while straddling a wider beam to provide the best of both worlds. Sunreef is emerging as one of the most tempting builders of twin-hull power megayachts of this nature. We brought you news earlier this year of their 70-meter design, and now they've followed up with a slightly more modest 40-meter model.

Still measuring an enormous 131 feet length overall (LOA), the 40-meter Sunreef Power boasts expansive accommodations across three decks. The lowest is split between the two hulls, one containing the crew's quarters and galley, the other a pair of VIP staterooms. Two more staterooms can be found on the main deck, with the owner's suite on the upper deck. There's also a gym with deployable terrace, a pool and tender garages fore and aft.

Generous propulsion options promise a quick pace, with twin 1,920-horsepower engines driving up to 20 knots, the addition of water jets up to 32 knots and gas turbines up to 41.

$750,000 Supercharged 41 Luxury Cat Goes 125 MPH

Bespoke Bugattis weren't the only things unveiled at the recent Dubai Motor Show. Liquid Glass Powerboats based in Iowa also unveiled its new 41-ft. Luxury Cat, which costs $750,000 and can go 125 mph thanks to twin 700 hp Mercury Racing engines with copper-nickel alloy superchargers. The custom-built catamaran features a state-of-the-art infusion-molded hull and deck and a high-tech foam core. It comes equipped with Mercury's VesselView driver information display, showing vital engine stats such as RPMs, engine temperatures, trim positions, trip history logs, and engine efficiencies in real time across more than 20 screens. There's cockpit seating for six passengers and the luxuriously-appointed below-bow cabin has a spectacular audio / video entertainment system.

Charter Richard Branson's Carbon Fiber Catamaran

Want to go cruising in the Caribbean like a fun-loving mega-mogul? Starting next month you can now charter Virgin founder Richard Branson's 105-ft. catamaran, the Necker Belle (above), for $88,000 per week. The carbon fiber craft, which just underwent a two-year refit at Australia's Azzura Marine, is capable of over 20 knots while under sail and 18 knots under power. The yacht can accomodate up to 10 guests in four en suite staterooms and the main cabin's lounge area, which can be converted to a double cabin, as well as a crew of seven. The modern, beach-house style interior modeled on Branson's Necker Island retreat in the British Virgin Islands features a wine cellar and there's an open-air cinema as well.

Aeroyacht 110 by Wally Comes with Icon A5 Plane

Gregor Tarjan, designer of the Aeroyacht 110, a superfast 110-ft. catamaran equipped with an Icon A5 exploration airplane, has commissioned Monegasque yachtbuilder Wally to construct the avant-garde craft. Representing the first model of a sleek, new range "embodying the ultimate high-performance, supremely styled world yacht," the Aeroyacht 110 will be one of the largest composite multihulls in the world. As standard equipment the craft will come fitted with a two seat Icon A5 amphibious, retractable and fold-able sports plane, launched and retrieved from a specially designed pod. The yacht, which is expected to do 35 knots at full speed, will be ready for delivery in 2011.

Porsche Design's 135-Foot Catamaran Megayacht for Royal Falcon Fleet

Unlike its automotive counterpart which keeps making its cars bigger and bigger, Porsche Design tends to keep things small. The product design division of the German automaker turns its talents on everything from mobile phones and watches to clothing and luggage. But this time they're thinking a bit bigger. A lot bigger, actually.

We brought you initial information about the company's impending collaboration with Singapore's Royal Falcon Fleet ship yard last year when it was still in the embryonic stage. But design work has now been completed and construction has started on the impressive 135-foot catamaran megayacht. The twin-hull design gives the RFF135 a wide beam and unrivaled stability without displacing as much water as a conventional design, while providing a massive 472 square meters of interior floorspace and 208 square meters of deck space, more than enough to accommodate 10 guests and 10 crew. Twin MTU V16 turbodiesel engines each produce an unfathomable 4600 horsepower, enough to keep the vessel at a theoretical 35-knot top speed and making it the most powerful vehicle of any kind Porsche has ever designed. Porsche to Design New Luxury Yachts

Porsche Design is teaming up with Singapore-based yacht concern Royal Falcon Fleet on a new line of luxury catamarans and megayachts. The companies' initial collaborative project will be a high-tech 135-ft. motor catamaran, dubbed the RFF135 (above), to be sold under the Royal Falcon Fleet brand. Porsche Design will design both the exterior hull and the interior of the megayacht, which is expected to do 35 knots and retail in the millions. Royal Falcon Fleet, which dubs its craft "the ultimate in billionaire boys' toys," has engaged cutting edge Swedish-based marine engineering firm Kockums and Australian catamaran builder Incat Crowther for the project's naval architecture needs. No word yet on a completion date.

Macao's Flashy Ferries

This vividly colored catamaran is the first of ten 47.5 meter passenger catamarans that will operate as high speed ferries taking pleasure-seeking passengers from Hong Kong to the luxury gaming area of Macao. The catamarans have a speed of 42 knots and can carry more than 400 passengers. They are going to be busy. The popularity of the island Las Vegas is growing rapidly, the Hong Kong to Macao trek is currently the world's largest route in terms of passenger numbers and will only go up as more and more lavish hotels are opened in the area. Last year, the Hong Kong to Macao route saw 14.3 million passengers.

H2X Yachts Launches Bradley Catamaran

Bradley is the newest catamaran launched by H2X Yachts and Ships. Bradley is an 85-foot yacht which has room for 14 people in five double cabins including a master cabin, with en-suite bathroom and private panoramic terrace. The yacht has a light interior using ceruse oak for the wall partitions and wenge wood for the floor area. The paint work is done in deep blue and silver gray and she has teak decks. The yacht also has a double spa and a well-shaded lounging area. She cruises at 10 knots on two Hamilton hydro-jets powered by twin MAN engines and has a range of more than 1000 nautical miles. A hydraulic lift facilitates the launching of her tender and jet skis. The yacht will be on display at the Festival International de la Plaisance de Cannes 2007 as well as the Monaco Yacht Show. The Mini Inflatable Catamaran: The Ultimate in Boating Convenience

Nahema Plans To Launch Luxury Cruising Catamarans

The luxury catamaran market just become more interesting. Nahema is a new French company headquartered in Marseille which builds cruising catamarans over 100 feet. The first catamaran, a new build for a client, will be 110 feet and will have four suites. It will have a carbon daggerboard and a rotating mast for the large sail. The yacht features contemporary interiors designed by Franck Darnet that show off a larger interior space that is open and light (more interior schematics can be found on the Luxury Catamarans blog.. Nahema will show off their designs at the Monaco Yacht Show and the Fort Lauderdale Yacht Show.

Club Costa Yacht Club

A new option for catamaran cruisers is set to launch this spring. Club La Costa's yacht club will be starting their first season in March with 60-foot catamarans which sail around the island of Mallorca. The yachts are custom fitted for cruising and have a fully equipped galley with well stocked bar. There is also equipment for fishing and scuba diving, snorkeling, sea kayaking, dinghy sailing and windsurfing. There are four double cabins, a saloon with a dining area, plasma screen and DVD player. There is also an outdoor dining area, sunbathing deck and an outdoor freshwater shower. A week of sailing costs £800 per person, based on two people sharing an en-suite double cabin. And the price includes all meals and drinks on board and tuition and use of all water sports equipment. Membership of the Club La Costa Yacht Club is available from £8,000 and offers six weeks use of a luxury en-suite double cabin. Or if you want a yacht to yourself you could always charter one for £12,000.

Discovery 50 Spirit Catamaran

Another yacht that made its premiere at the London Boat Show, was the Discovery 50 Spirit Catamaran. The 50-foot yacht is Discovery's first multihull. The new boat is designed for cruising and can reach speeds of up to 16 knots. The interior will feature a large saloon and galley with raised saloon seating. Future buyers of the yacht will be able to choice either a three or four double cabin layout. The yacht is designed to be easily sailed by two. There will also be a hot tub on the foredeck. The yacht should be officially launched later this year. The yacht will sell for over $1.2 million.

Stealth Yachts

South Africa isn't one of the places that has been big for yacht building in past years but lately the country has an increasing amount of boat builders and they are busting out some pretty innovative boats. A recent Reuters article alerted me to the recent sale of the second Stealth 540, a cruising catamaran from South African company Stealth yachts. The Stealth 540 costs $1.5 million and is one of the first powerboats in the world to be fitted with "Q-speed," a propulsion system that lets the propeller work when it is half-in and half-out of the water. The yacht has three or four cabins (plus a crew cabin) depending on the layout and cruises at up to 40 knots.

Catamarans, both sail-based and power-based like the Stealth yacht, are one of the largest growing categories for yacht building in South Africa. Stealth has a range of hydrofoil-supported catamarans starting with a modest semi-rigid inflatable boat. They offer both charter management and fractional programs for the larger yachts.

Ultimate 2 Catamaran

For those looking for a large yacht than can still make decent time, a catamaran is often the answer. An article in a British Columbia newspaper profiles Seascape Marine Builders, a growing company in Maple Ridge, B.C. They are working on the Ultimate 2, a 72-foot jet powered catamaran that can race along at 80km/h (around 43 knots). The yacht uses two 1650 horsepower Rolls-Royce engines to power the water jets. The yacht cost $7 million to create and sleeps ten. The Ultimate 2 is headed to a German client in the Dominican Republic.
