Susan Kralovec Claw Cat Tree

It is a dog's world right now. The popularity of dogs versus cats appears uncanny. Even for a regular old joe dog, the treatment they receive is amazing! I have friends that treat their precious pets as children. And of course I would not want the treatment of dogs to be any less than civil. Now, if you are a celebrity dog, forget about it. You have reached instant stardom and the pinnacle of 4 star treatment.

But what about cats? When will they be seen on celebrity news programming? When will Garfield release his next installment? When will the cat have it's day? Being that I grew up with 4 cats in our home, I have a soft spot for the furry and laid back creatures. They do their own thing and they are so low maintenance. Maybe not the most exciting of all the pets one could have but it works for me.

Growing up, we had cat scratching posts in every room. My mom tried to make them look as unobtrusive as possible but antique furniture and rope scratching posts were not complementary to one another. Nowadays, the choices of pet furniture and accessories are plentiful. Whether in design, their construction, and materials used - they have become stylish on their own accord. Seen here is the modern scratching post/lounge chair for your feline companion. The Claw Cat Tree by Susan Kralovec is made of corrugated cardboard while the surface is treated with a zero-VOC, non-toxic paint. Maintenance is easy. All you have to do is lightly sand the corrugated surface to conceal scratch marks. Seen here in canary, it is also available in iguana, koi, and maltese. Dimensions: 24"H x 10"W x 12"H. Price: $75.

Ashera, The Designer Cat

If this cat looks a bit extraordinary, that's because this is no ordinary cat. It's an Ashera, a breed created by mixing the bloodlines of a domesticated cat, an African Serval and an Asian Leopard Cat. The result is a 30 pound kitty who is highly intelligent, affectionate and has no problem with being walked on a leash. However, you might not want to rush out and spend the $22,000 asking price for this cat just yet. There is a controversy brewing and some say the Ashera isn't a new breed at all, but rather a Savannah cat with a different name and higher price. The Savannah was introduced in 2000, contains the same bloodlines and costs less than $5,000. Either way, this is a really cool cat.

Pets Cruise with You on the Queen Mary 2

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Pets

Now going on a luxury cruise doesn't mean getting sad puppy eyes as you book a boarding house for your favorite pet -- the Atlantic cruise liner Queen Mary 2 gives you the option of bringing them along! The amenities of their "Pets on Deck" program include fresh-baked biscuits at turn-down, a variety of bedding and blanket options, and even a little coat with the QM2 logo. All pet guests also receive a complimentary gift pack with a mix of essentials and fun stuff, such as a food dish with scoop, a name tag, a frisbee, and a complimentary portrait with their owners.

As a dog owner I think it's great when vacations are pet-friendly, but in this case I can't help but wonder: do people's pets ever get seasick? That would not be pleasant!

Elegant, yet functional, the Lotus Cat Scratcher is the ideal cat toy for those who want to keep their cat's favorite scratching post out where they can access it, without putting an eyesore in the room. The sleek scratcher is made of solid pine and is available with birch, cherry or mahogany stains. The Ice Collar

Not as over-the-top as the crystal Christmas tree collar that was on our pets' gift lists last year, the Ice Collar is still a pretty blingy way to accessorize your pooch. The collar is made of Italian crocodile-embossed leather in high-gloss black and is studded generously with two rows of Swarovski crystals. Prices range from $78 to $110, depending on size.

If you have a very small dog, you might want to opt for the teacup version of the collar, which comes in both black and bright red.

Heated Pet Bed

Over the summer, we saw a cooling pet bed that was designed to help keep your pup comfortable on even the hottest of summer days. This heated pet bed does just the opposite. It is designed to stay at a constant 102F, which is comfortable for most cats and small dogs, as well as being therapeutic for older pets. It is even recommended by vets for animals with problems like arthritis. It is made of faux suede with a faux lambskin lining, all of which is removable and machine washable. Price: $60.

Everyday Studio Acrylic Pet Feeders

Most of the pet bowls that we have seen over the past few months tend towards sleek and modern, often metallic, designs that look good in contemporary homes without actually looking like they're just dishes for the dog. Everyday Studio's Acrylic Pet Feeders keep the minimalist look, but add a tiny hint of color that looks less stark than some of those other bowls. The bowls come in three different sizes, appropriate for the size of a wide range of animals, and have removable rubber feet to prevent slippage. They are available in four colors: carnation, clementine, crystal clear and glacier. Price: $50-100, depending on size.

Pet Sleigh Bed

Beds, whether they are for pets or not, are not really seasonal items, though it is hard to resist the appeal of a sleigh bed in the winter, when the very name manages to make it sound more romantic. This pet-sized sleigh bed has a powder coated brown iron frame and plush, hand-sewn cushions. The cushions are done in a machine-washable leopard print fabric and have concealed zippers, which prevents any fur from accidentally getting caught in the zipper's teeth. The beds are made-to-order and are available in three sizes: 10-lbs, 25-lbs and 50-lbs. Prices range from $220 to $450, depending on size.

Designer Archipod Cat Furniture

Cats don't seem to get as large a percentage of the luxury pet goods market as dogs do. Perhaps the reason is that dogs are more likely to be taken along on shopping trips with their "parents," but cat owners are just as interested in pampering their felines as dog owners are in pampering their pups. Designer Archipod Cat Furniture is a piece that is just for cats. It is made out of industrial-strength corrugated cardboard with a maple base and functions both as a seat and as a scratching post. You might even be able to get away with calling it art before the cats get into it too much. It measures 25" x 33" x 12". Price: $369.

The Dog Bar

It really is a dog's life in Miami. It's a city where people love their dogs so much that there is a 24-hour luxury department store for dogs only. The Dog Bar stocks just about everything you could want to get for a pet, from pet foods and chew toys to luxury pet beds and the latest in fashionable collars. Don't be surprised if you end up spotting a celebrity or two with their pets if you're in the store, but the focus is on the pets and the helpful staff will make sure that they are well taken care of while there and stylishly outfitted by the time they leave.

Scratchable Cat Furniture

The problem with cats is that they have a tendency to scratch up your carefully selected rugs and furniture, potentially ruining any style other than shabby chic. The solution is to get a scratching post for Fluffy, but those don't generally make designer's hearts skip a beat, either - with the exception of the Everyday Studio line of scratchable cat furniture from designer Susan Kralovec. There are three designs, all made from triple-wall laminated cardboard with an enamel finish, which comes in one of four colors. We're not going to suggest that you change you decor to suit the scratching post, but it is an option. Especially if your cat already matched the rest of your furniture to a scratching post that wasn't as attractive as this one. Price: $155 ("pounce", pictured)

Cat Gets Gold Grill

We know that people get some weird things done to their teeth from time to time, but we didn't know that they sometimes do the same to their pets. A dentist in Indiana put gold crowns on the lower front teeth of his 1-year old Persian cat, Sebastian. He was worried about the strength of the cat's teeth, given their unusual protrusion, and wanted the crowns primarily to reinforce them. The secondary reason was that "it was a fun thing to do."

The crowns cost about $900 each and can be done for any pet, though it's probably a bit kinder to the animal to do it out of medical need and not just to give your kitty some bling.
