Franco Ferrari Cashmere Scarves

It is cold here in the Midwest this week (-18º F last night, brrr!) so even though these cashmere scarves by Franco Ferrari are meant for men they're looking pretty darn inviting. Soft, cozy, and reversible, the scarves come in a few different designs that are all interesting and stylish but still versatile enough to justify the expense. The multi-colored stripes/polka dot design is my favorite because it's bright enough to add a punch of color to your winter style but the colors are toned down just enough. $245

The Classicist: Bamford's New Fall Favorites

Filed under: Cosmetics and Fragrance, Men's Style, The Classicist

Bamford & Sons, the bastion of top-drawer British style whose killer custom Rolex we wrote about a couple months back, has come out with a stunning fall collection that actually has us looking forward to the end of summer. In addition, the company is launching a new Bath & Body line to add to their already impressive lineup of clothing and accessories, which includes everything from cashmere blankets to limited edition sterling silver iPods.

Bamford's sporty classics with a bit of a natty twist - check out this cashmere shooting jacket paired with a purple cashmere sweater - are known for being extremely comfortable and well made. The company's motto is "A man's life should determine his clothes; not vice versa." Their craftsmanship and blend of "innovation and heritage" calls to mind a classic British sportscar with beautiful burled walnut inlays, chrome gauges and hand-stitched leather seats.

For fall, traditional items such as this shooting jacket, the classic pea coat, tweeds and trench coats are given a lighter, more contemporary feel. Organic, sustainable and natural fibers are used, never synthetics. It may surprise you to know that not only is this shooting jacket water-resistant, but it is treated with a natural moisture repellent derived from the lotus flower rather than any nasty chemicals. If you bought one of those beautiful $100,000 Asprey shotguns we wrote about, this is the jacket to do it justice.

The Classicist: The Private Luxury of Loro Piana

Filed under: Apparel, Men's Style, The Classicist

If I had the means I could easily wear nothing but Loro Piana for the rest of my life. They make the most comfortable, classic, stylish and subtly luxurious clothes I've ever had the pleasure of putting on. World-famous for their cashmere, the 200-year-old Italian company, which began as a textile merchant, has also branched out into other areas (including accessories and women's clothing) in more recent years with equal success.

Loro Piana's motto has it that true luxury is "knowing, not showing," i.e. dressing for yourself, not to impress others. It's "an inner satisfaction that comes from an aesthetic, intellectual, tactile pleasure, stemming from tradition, research and genuine quality." What could be better than that?

Their latest innovation is called Baby Cashmere®. To make this fabric the company first had to spend several years convincing Mongolian and Chinese breeders to comb the fine underfleece of the Hyrcus goat kid when it is 3-12 months old. Each combing yields no more than 30 grams of the rare, precious and incredibly soft fibre. Baby Cashmere crops up in Loro Piana's luxe Fall/Winter 2008 collection, which is about to hit stores; as usual we want it all.

We love the knitted stretch cashmere Davenport jacket pictured here, which like a lot of their designs calls to mind a cross between Cary Grant and Steve McQueen. And also like many of their best designs it captures that ineffable quality of effortless elegance the Italians call sprezzatura. This is the kind of thing you wear for a drive to your villa on Lake Como in your Maserati Gran Turismo. Even better, merely putting on this jacket for a trip to the liquor store can make you feel like you're driving to your villa in a Maserati, which is the real test of its worth (The jacket retails for $3,995).

Luxe Underfoot by Loro Piana

Loro Piana Interiors, the newest division of the luxury cashmere manufacturer, has created the 'One Step to Heaven' carpet, woven from 100% cashmere. The wool is taken from the underbellies of the rare Hyrcus goats which currently dwell high up in the mountains in Mongolia, Afghanistan, Iran and Northern China. The fibers are taken from the soft under-fleece of the goat called the "duvet". It is exceptionally fine and soft and provides superior protection from extreme weather conditions. Given its rarity (each goat produces between 150 - 200 grams of under-fleece fibers annually) and the difficulty in gathering and checking the quality of fiber, you know that its value is going to be cost prohibitive to all but the most discerning and demanding client. At 1,180 Euros per square meter, it's not for the kids' rooms, but perfect for the more intimate spaces such as your master suites on your yachts, jets, and vacation homes. If you try to justify the price based on weight it might be worth it, as you get approximately two kilos of the world's finest cashmere fibers in each square meter. This ultimate residential indulgence comes in three natural shades and has been thoughtfully treated with a stain-resistant coating. Your feet will thank you for it and you'll save a bundle on shoes, so it is worth it right?
