Luxist Giveaway: Flor Carpet Tiles

Carpet tiles aren't exactly the sexy topic around. Certainly the idea of trekking across town to attend the opening of a carpet store isn't generally my idea of a fun Thursday night but there was wisdom to be had at the new Flor store on Broadway in Santa Monica. The store, located near the popular Third Street Promenade shopping area is only the second bricks and mortar store for the online brand in the U.S. (the other is in Chicago). This one is literally bricks and mortar, full of exposed brick, concrete floors and open light-filled space.

What is Flor? It's a system of carpet squares designed to work in a modular system that lets you design the size of floor covering you want as well as choose from a variety of mix and match colors, patterns and styles. The squares assemble together quickly and easily using special non-toxic, adhesives that stick to the back of each square and not to the floor. You can remove and move your squares, pulling up old squares to refresh your design with new ones or to relocate your rug to another room or take it with you when you move. The squares are also washable and replaceable. They come shipped in flat, recyclable boxes and you can even send in your old Flor tiles for recycling. The squares are made with varied degrees of renewable and recycled materials including natural, un-dyed wool and post-consumer waste like plastic soda and water bottles. They are also non-toxic and contain an antimicrobial that inhibits the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew.

Part of the magic of Flor is that the head of the parent company, Interstate, Ray C. Anderson, is committed to running businesses that respect people and the earth. In fact the wrote the book on it. His "Confessions of A Radical Industrialist" details his decision to overhaul his business in selling industrial carpet tiles into a green business.

At the event I received a Flor press bag that I'm passing on to on Luxist reader. The bag contains Ray C. Anderson's book "Confessions of A Radical Industrialist" as well as a gift certificate for a six square (3'x5') Flor rug in Fedora (a total value of $120). Art You Can Walk All Over

Brighten up any room with a striking canvas floor cloth by Sarah Minor Design. The cloths, which are hand-painted in Portsmouth, N.H., are made with 100% cotton duck. They are treated with commercial primers, paint and finishes, which makes them both durable and impervious to water. Even better, they can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth.

Sarah Minor Design floor cloths come in two different sizes and in a variety of rich and vibrant colors. The 2-1/2 by 3 foot size is perfect for a foyer, powder room, kitchen, laundry room or mud room. There's also a 2-1/2 by 5-1/2 foot runner, which looks great in a hallway or a French door entryway. Whimsical designs range from red peppers, eggplant, artichoke and lemons to poppies, pansies, lake trout and roosters, among many others. The company will also welcome custom orders if there's a particular size, design or color scheme you prefer.

Painted floor cloths may be the new rage, but its hardly a new concept. They were very fashionable in homes from the Colonial days to the early 20th century.

Prices range from $295 to $595. Custom orders are priced per square foot.

Luxe Underfoot by Loro Piana

Loro Piana Interiors, the newest division of the luxury cashmere manufacturer, has created the 'One Step to Heaven' carpet, woven from 100% cashmere. The wool is taken from the underbellies of the rare Hyrcus goats which currently dwell high up in the mountains in Mongolia, Afghanistan, Iran and Northern China. The fibers are taken from the soft under-fleece of the goat called the "duvet". It is exceptionally fine and soft and provides superior protection from extreme weather conditions. Given its rarity (each goat produces between 150 - 200 grams of under-fleece fibers annually) and the difficulty in gathering and checking the quality of fiber, you know that its value is going to be cost prohibitive to all but the most discerning and demanding client. At 1,180 Euros per square meter, it's not for the kids' rooms, but perfect for the more intimate spaces such as your master suites on your yachts, jets, and vacation homes. If you try to justify the price based on weight it might be worth it, as you get approximately two kilos of the world's finest cashmere fibers in each square meter. This ultimate residential indulgence comes in three natural shades and has been thoughtfully treated with a stain-resistant coating. Your feet will thank you for it and you'll save a bundle on shoes, so it is worth it right?

The World's Largest Carpet is Worth $5.8 Million

The list of "things Iran has that the U.S. doesn't" is a pretty short one, but one item to be found on it would be this: the world's largest handmade carpet. At 60,546 sq ft the carpet is larger than a soccer field and took 18 months and 1,200 weavers to make. Red and green in color, it was created and assembled from 9 individual sections and has over 2.2 billion knots.

So where does a rug of this size find a home? Well this one, worth an estimated $5.8 million, is destined for a mosque in the United Arab Emirates.

Dots Then Dot Rug

The Dots Then Dot Rug is part of Van Der Hurd Studio's Follow the Dots collection, which seems to have been inspired by dots, drops and all the different ways that they can be showcased. Even in this simple pattern, you can see how the arrangement of the dots leads the eye from side to side, following them around. The rug is hand-knotted and made of 100% wool. Its muted tones will add some color to a room, but will not be obvious or detract from other design elements. It measures 6' x 9', but custom sizes are available. Price: $5,500.

Emma Gardner Cross Hatch Rug

Winter isn't actually here yet and already we're getting a little bit tired of seeing so many blacks and dark browns in stores. We don't mind those colors, of course, but things just seem to get a bit drab in winter, especially when compared with the vibrant colors of summer. This Cross Hatch Rug from Emma Gardner can add some color to your decor without going over-the-top. It features seasonless tans and neural colors to balance the richer pinks. The rug is hand-tufted 100% New Zealand wool and is available in three sizes: 6' x 8' ($1,776), 9' x 12' ($3,996) and 12' x 16' ($7,104).

Seagrass Rug

Are shag rugs experiencing a revival? They seem to be cropping up more and more frequently, as consumers look for decorative touches to add to their homes that look "lively." The Seagrass Rug is made with hand-tufted New Zealand wool and is made with great care, with precise stitching and knot work. It is available in small and large sizes, as well as in red and blue. Nancy Marquina, the creator of the rugs, works with nonprofits to fight child labor in the rug production industry, so the purchase of a rug like this one helps to support an entire movement. The large size measures 7'x10' and is $2,798.

Puzzle Carpeting

Another puzzle-themed piece to add to our ever growing collection is the Imperial Puzzle Carpet. Available at Ona in packages of 6 for $56, the modular carpet can be arranged just like a puzzle, though its slightly irregular pieces mean that there is more than one "right" way to do so. Only three colors are available - light grey, charcoal and sand - so the puzzle will attract interest, but won't detract from the rest of the room.

The Ultimate Shag Rug

I am trying very hard to resist using any phrase from the Austin Powers movie series, but it is taking a lot of self control to not describe this rug as "shagadelic!" because I never thought that I would actually want a shag rug again. The Shag Rug by Ron Arad is the grooviest-looking shag I've seen. It's smart, funny and probably even softer than it appears to be. It's available from The Rug Company, but even priced at £4,850, they won't last long because there are only 10 available.
