Sir Stirling Moss' Townhouse in Mayfair, London

High-tech houses full of computerized everything and robotized everything else are all the rage these days, but back in the 60's most people hadn't even dreamed of having remote-operated bathtubs and automatic dumbwaiters. Sir Stirling Moss did, however. Renowned as the "greatest driver never to win the world championship", Sir Stirling retired as one of the most distinguished racing drivers in the world. Having retired after a crash put him into a coma, Moss built himself a swanky townhouse in Mayfair, London, and packed it with all the gadgets and gizmos he could shake a titanium rod at. The best feature could very well be the one-of-a-kind carbon fiber elevator which was built especially for him by the Williams F1 team.

Seem a bit much? Moss certainly doesn't think so: the octogenarian is building himself a new house on a 2,300 square-foot plot along the river in the the retirement community of Deerfield Beach, Florida, complete with all the environmentally-friend credentials you'd expect. Gemballa Mirage GT Carbon Edition Proves that "Exclusive" is Relative

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Some people just have way too much money on their hands. Those people tend to buy Porsches. But with rumors afloat of a new flagship supercar based on the German carmaker's RS Spyder race car, the last real exotic machine the company produced was the Carrera GT. Now discontinued, examples are still trading hands in seven-figure territory. For those few lucky enough to have gotten their hands on one, Gemballa has now released what could be the ultimate modification package for the ultimate Porsche. Called the Mirage GT Carbon Edition, the modified Carrera GT features a full array of carbon-fiber components to improve the car's aesthetics and performance. Gemballa has also tuned the engine to a whopping 670 horsepower, capable of pushing the supercar to sixty in just 3.7 seconds en route to a top speed of 208 miles per hour...perfect for a Sunday drive on the Autobahn. Of course this kind of performance doesn't come cheap: 300,000 euros is what the modifications alone will cost you, not including the cost of the car itself. At those kinds of prices, no wonder Gemballa only plans on building five of them.

Australian yacht builder Azzura Marine has just launched its new $1.5 million Marten 49, a sleek-lined, super-stylish cruiser-racer with a carbon fiber hull, bulkheads and deck. Designed for maximum flexibility, maneuverability and luxury, the 49-ft. yacht's innovative hydraulic lifting keel improves performance when racing and reduces draught for accessibility to harbors and anchorages when cruising. The yacht, billed as the ultimate dual purpose vessel, features a teak interior with a master cabin equipped with a double bed, separate en-suite bath and shower, two guest cabins, a comfortable saloon and fully-equipped galley.

Carbon-Fiber Briefcase by Schedoni

Filed under: Handbags, Luxury Cars & Autos

schedoni briefcase

Schedoni. To most people, the name doesn't carry any meaning. But to those in the know, it's the marque of the finest craftsmanship. The century-old Italian leather-crafters make all the fitted luggage for Ferrari road cars, and even fabricate that little pad at the back of a Scuderia Ferrari F1 car to keep Kimi and Felipe's helmets from knocking against the carbon fiber bodywork. But when the atelier isn't too busy stitching together those tiny little cases for Maranello, or making a special line of driving shoes together with Puma, they make some of their own products, too, and this is one of our favorites: an exquisitely-crafted carbon fiber briefcase.

Made from the same materials used on the most exotic of sports and racing cars, the carbon fiber shell is painstakingly woven and baked in a kiln. It's such an intricate process that half the ones they try to make have to be scrapped. Inside, Schedoni lines the lightweight case with beautifully tanned suede for that look and feel which only Ferrari's own bag-makers could manage. Of course that kind of excellence comes at a price: $4,400 in this case. At least this way your wallet will be lighter, too.

Italian Watchmaker Mecchanice Veloce Collaborates with Brembo for Unique Carbon-Ceramic Watch

Filed under: Timepieces / Watches, Luxury Cars & Autos

Ironic as it may seem, there are so many watches, and so little time. Yet even in a business so simultaneously timeless and focussed on time, watchmakers are constantly racing to adopt new construction methods. Especially among automotive-inspired watches. But the latest seems to have come to a full stop: the Quattro Valvole CCM by Meccaniche Veloci. The Italian watchmaker has teamed up with Brembo, the biggest name in automotive braking systems, to produce this rare carbon-ceramic timepiece.

This special edition is made of a blend of carbon-fiber and high-strength ceramics, the same material now being used in the most advanced racing and sportscar brakes. In brakes, they offer longevity, lightness of weight and incredible resistance to deformation. In the watch, they offer the same, along with a unique appearance. Each watch incorporates four individual automatic Swiss movements, compartmentalized like the four-valve cylinder heads first seen on the most sophisticated sportscar engines, available in four different colors, capped by titanium crowns and held on to your wrist by interchangeable rubber and alligator straps. But at $15,000 apiece, they don't come cheap.

Bugatti Veyron Pur Sang for Sale at $3 Million

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Earlier this month my colleague Noah Joseph reported that an ultra-rare Bugatti Veyron Pur Sang (above), one of only five built, had been put up for sale in Abu Dhabi at an undisclosed price. When originally announced in 2007, the special edition cars with exposed carbon fiber and aluminum bodywork sold out within 24 hours. Now a second Pur Sang is being offered in via online global luxury marketplace JamesList for $3 million in Frankfurt, Germany where the car was originally unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It only has 124 miles on it, in case you were wondering. As we reported previously, the economic downturn has forced many Veyron owners to try and offload the vehicles in the hopes of cashing in on their exclusivity.

Evo to Debut Electric Superbike

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Green

In June UK-based Evo Design will debut its high-performance electric superbike, the EV-0 RR (above), at the TTXGP zero-emissions grand prix on the Isle of Man. Evo collaborated with motorcycle design house Xenophya on the motorcycle, which features a lightweight carbon fiber monocoque chassis, forkless single-sided front suspension and twin electric battery-powered engines from Green Motorsport that will deliver serious speed. So far Evo is keeping performance specs under wraps and has not revealed production plans, but TTXGP race rules require that competing bikes be offered for sale at its conclusion for no more than $30,000.

Prindiville Prestige Million-Dollar Carbon Fiber Lambo

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

British tuner Prindiville Prestige is offering the most expensive special edition Lamborghini since the €1 million Reventon that went on sale last year. Prindiville, which specializes in creating one-off, bespoke cars to even the most exacting specifications, has completely restyled the Murcielago LP-640. The total cost for the vehicle tops $1 million, including €330,000 for the interior modifications alone: two-toned leather upholstery, hand-finished aluminum accents and specially engineered aluminum air vents.

Outside, all of the bodywork with the exception of the front compartment lid has been redesigned in carbon fiber - even the roof panel. Valances, sills and louvres have all been delpoyed for a lean, mean, shark-like appearance. Other upgrades include a specially designed titanium sports exhaust system, handleless doors with remote electric opening, and miniature cameras in the door mirrors. The one-of-a-kind car is arguably more exclusive than the Reventon, of which 20 were built.

World's Fastest Sailboat, Carbon Fiber SIG45 for Sale

carbon fiber sig45
The world's fastest production sailboat, Le Breton Yachts' SIG45 (above), is for sale in the Netherlands via global online luxury marketplace JamesList for about $900,000. The SIG45 (SIG stands for "Speed Innovation Grace" is capable of sailing in excess of 25 knots, a speed normally restricted to powerboats. It was "designed to fill the gap between a high performance racing boat and a luxury cruising yacht, in the same way that today's super cars fill the gap between F1 and regular cars."

Built entirely of carbon fiber, the SIG45 was designed by the architects of the world's fastest offshore sailing yachts. Unlike a pure racing craft however, the yacht features stunning lines and a minimalist yet luxurious interior created by superyacht designer Bjorn Johansson. High quality fabrics and fittings were used throughout the three double cabins, two fully equipped heads, galley, saloon and separate navigation station.

Nike's Carbon Footprint...Only 190 Grams!

Nike's latest iteration of the Mercurial soccer shoe, the Vapor SL, is a real feat of engineering, and I like the color combo, too. The SL in the name stands for "Super Lite" -- the black shoe and its hot pink swoosh only weigh 190 grams.

Some ingredient called "Tepex" is all about maximum strength with minimal weight. I researched Tepex a little bit, and without an engineering degree, reached the conclusion that if it's good enough for the aerospace industry, it's probably good enough to wear on your feet.

Crafted almost entirely from carbon fiber, the sneaker retails for $400. Because a pair of these are so hard to come by -- Nike only made 2,508 pairs -- they're only truly available on eBay, starting at around $1,000.

Carbon Fiber Coasters Look Like Sculpture

It's hard getting men to use coasters, unless you hand one to them or there's one sitting out on the table already it's unlikely to happen. With this coaster set in easy reach, though, things might be different. Made of solid quasi-isotropic carbon fiber the coasters have a high-gloss surface on the top and little rubber feet on the bottom. Plus they can be stored and displayed in their very stylish stand that looks more like sculpture than any coaster set I've seen. Certainly a good way to keep the coasters out and in easy reach for regular use. $149.99

Ferrari Gas Cap Paperweight

Filed under: Decor, Luxury Cars & Autos

Carbon Fiber Gear highlighted recently a Ferrari 355 gas cap paperweight. Made by RaceChairs.com, it's constructed of a 6″ x 6″ piece of carbon fiber, a colored suede underside and a real (but unused) gas cap from a Ferrari 355. (Also available with a Lamborghini Diablo gas cap.) The carbon fiber weave is clearcoated for shiny finish, and the bottom of the paperweight is covered in your choice of black, yellow, or red suede, to ensure it won't scratch your desk. The gas cap is highly polished aluminum with the Ferrari logo on the center. Optional: have an engraved plaque added or get wall hangers for display. $325, but just $199 on RaceChairs.com at the time of this writing. Looks like something our sister site, autoblog, might take a liking to.

Ferrari Prances in Hybrid-Electric Style

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Hybrid-electric vehicles seem to be all the rage these days, and the prototypes in the stables at Ferrari's home of Fiorano is no exception.

As part of its 60th birthday celebration, Ferrari unveiled the Mini Chili, a mere 1,000 kg beast almost completely made of carbon fiber sporting fixed seats and carbon ceramic brakes. The need for a dashboard is gone with the driver information systems all being condensed down into the steering wheel, making for a compact little ride. The light weight is offset by an Active Aerodynamics system, which kicks in at the most opportune of moments.

Don't get your hopes too high, though -- Ferrari claims it won't make this car, but be on the lookout for similar technology in future Ferrari vehicles.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Alinghi Team Chronograph Watch

The latest watch from Audemars Piguet is the Royal Oak Offshore Alinghi Team Chronograph. The watches showcase carbon, taking their inspiration from the Class America boats which use carbon fiber for lightness. The watches use a selfwinding movement with a power reserve of up to 60 hours. Nautically inspired details include a red-rimmed six-hour counter at 6 o'clock, the twenty-minute counter at 9 o'clock that has an openworked hand shaped like a ship's prow and the Alinghi logo that takes the place usually reserved for the 3 o'clock numeral. The countdown aperture in the upper right-hand part of the dial counts off the minutes prior to the start of a regatta and gradually becomes red as it nears the moment when the boats cross the start line. The 44mm case has a forged carbon bezel and is available with a case of forged carbon (a series of 1,300), 18K pink gold (a series of 600), or platinum (a series of 107). I haven't always been a fan off the Royal Oak watches before but I rather like the rugged carbon look here even if the watch does seem a bit bulky. More shots of the various versions after the jump.

Carbon Fiber Baseball Caps

Carbon fiber just makes everything look a little more high-tech. We've seen it used to great effect in cars and watches but baseball caps? Ginity now makes a baseball cap with a visor manufactured from carbon, silver or gold fiber. The embedded fibers gives the visor a three-dimensional look and guarantee that it won't get that warped and frayed look that many other caps get over time. The shiny visor also gives off a bit of sparkle in the sun. The caps are micro-suede and the gold and silver versions sell for 99 euros while the carbon fiber version is 115 euros. Ginity also does fiber business cards for those looking to make a dramatic impression.
