Cigars, Golf and Happy Hour in Pennsylvania

What are you doing on April 24? If you're a golfer, you're about to get a new answer to that question. That's the first day of the Famous 2009 Golf Tour, sponsored by Famous Smoke Shop and ESPN Radio of the Lehigh Valley. So, clean your clubs and get ready to head out to the Riverview Golf & Country Club in Easton, PA in a few weeks.

The golf tour itself stretches all the way to the Championship Round on October 9, so if you have a decent swing, you could spend close to six months chasing a little white ball around a carefully manicured lawn.

"Each match will be a two-man 'Best Ball Scramble,'" according to Famous Smoke Shop store manager, Tim Carr. "If a player doesn't have a partner, we will assign them one. Players' handicaps will also be used as a guide for creating the foursomes and pairing-up singles, but not for scoring of the rounds, which will be based on a points system," he added.

If, like me, you don't play golf, Famous Smoke Shop has a few other events planned for the summer, so you'll have no shortage of reasons to light up a cigar (as if you need one).

  • Golf Round 1, April 25: Classic Car Show
  • Golf Round 2, May 29: Motorcycle Show
  • Golf Round 3, June 27: Cigar Expo 2009
  • Golf Round 4, July 25: Classic Car Show
  • Golf Round 5, August 29: Motorcycle Show
  • Golf Round 6, September 19: TBD

The events will be held at the Famous Smoke Shop store in Easton, PA.

If you're planning to enter the tournament, the cost is $89.99 per round, and there are pro-rated discounts available for volume. A Happy Hour follows each event, where food and drinks will be served ... with featured cigars from event sponsors Drew Estate (ACID), CAO, Camacho, Cusano, Rocky Patel and Los Blancos.

CAO LX2 Photo Contest Winners Announced

If you're not following CAO on Twitter, you're missing something ... specifically, free cigars. There were more than 100 entries on Stogie Fresh, with the winning prizes far from trivial. The top spot came with an LX2 Limited Edition Humidor, with #2 getting a box of CAO LX2 cigars and #3 picking up an LX2 sample pack and a CAO ashtray.

Participants were certainly varied, with entries running from classical to truly creative. Cigars wore suits, brandished light sabers and sat alongside pints of beer. This is why judges had a tough time whittling down the final 40 to three winners and a few honorable mentions.

The winner, who posed a CAO LX2 on a craps table, probably won the judges over with his tag line: "Always a good bet."

If you're on Twitter, keep an eye on @aocigars, as this isn't the only contest I've seen.

Tickets for Cigar Expo 2009 are now on sale. The event takes place on Saturday, June 27 – starting at 2 PM. If you pony up for a VIP ticket, you'll also get to attend a dinner with the cigar manufacturers the night before. So, if you're in Easton, PA and have $150 to burn ($225 for the VIP level), this is an event to check out.

Famous Smoke Shop, the operation behind the festivities, will celebrate its 70th anniversary this year – as guests are likely to notice. "We're going to give this year's attendees the royal treatment," said Famous Smoke Shop Retail Store manager, Tim Carr ... and he gives some pretty compelling examples. "Not only will every guest receive at least 50 cigars, but we'll have plenty of entertainment, waitress service, a cigar menu, fantastic food, and some amazing raffle prizes."

The list of vendors participating this year is long and distinguished, including Altadis, Avo, CAO, Camacho, Davidoff, Joya De Nicaragua, Rocky Patel and General Cigar – along with many others. There's a good chance you'll find something you'll like.

CAO America picked today, Independence Day, to announce their latest cigar, CAO America. The cigar will make its debut at the upcoming RTDA 75th Annual Convention and International Trade Show in Houston in August. The CAO America will be the first 'Pinstripe' style cigar in CAO's portfolio with two American-grown wrapper leaves: one Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro and one Connecticut Shade. Inside there is a Brazilian binder and 100% ligero filler tobaccos from Nicaragua, Italy, U.S.A., and the Dominican Republic. The CAO America will come in 20 count red, white and blue boxes and comes in three shapes: Potomac (5" x 56), the torpedo-shaped Monument (6 1/4" x 54), and Landmark (6" x 60).

CAO Gold Maduro Cigars

Is Maduro the new trend in cigars? Yesterday I mentioned a triple Maduro from Camacho cigars and today I got notice of the new CAO Gold Maduro. The CAO Gold Maduro uses the same binder and filler tobaccos from the CAO gold line, aged Nicaraguan binder and fillers which have a mild and spicy flavor. The wrapper is a Brazilian Maduro and the cigars come in wooden boxes of 20 cigars each. The cigar is a former "concept" cigar which is now available to the general public. The CAO Gold Maduro is available in six shapes: Corona (5.5" x 42), Robusto (5" x 50), Corona Gorda (6.5" x 50), Churchill (7" x 48), Torpedo (6.25" 52), and Double Corona (7.5" x 54).

CAO Poker Bag

You could spend $2,500 on a poker set but if you are looking for something a bit more casual and perhaps the chance to put your money on the table rather than bring it to the table, cigar maker CAO has you covered. Their CAO Poker Bag has chips, cards, dice and a cedar-lined humidor fitted with a CAO Humidipak. The bag is made of ballistic nylon and sells for $200.

CAO's Crazy New Cigars

I don't know what to make of these cigars from CAO. Cigar Aficionado reports that these cigars are CAO's Brazilia vs. Italia: Artistry of Champions sampler set. The five-cigar set includes two CAO Italia blends, two CAO Brazilias and one, a combo called the Bratalia (the striped one in the center). Two of the cigars feature designs which represent the flags of the countries and two of the cigars are massive trumpets that hardly look like cigars at all. The sampler sells for $100.

Having a tough day already? Then hop over to the CAO website and go get yourself a free cigar. CAO has a new promotion called the CAO Cx2 Challenge. Answer a few simple questions (they're easy) and you get a free CAO Cx2 cigar and hat. The CAO Cx2 uses Cameroon tobacco as both the binder and the wrapper. The filler is a blend of tobaccos from the Jalapa region of Nicaragua and Columbia. Those who participate in the challenge are also eligible to win the grand prize which includes a CAO Cx2 humidor with 20 CAO Cx2 cigars, 50 CAO "Mystery" cigars and a merchandise package.
