Kissing Candlesticks

A romantic dinner by candlelight is perhaps one of the most common, and most enjoyable, ways to spend Valentine's Day. And what better way to set the mood and light the evening than with a pair of classy looking Kissing Candlesticks from Nambé. The candlesticks cuddle up together to give off a sweet glow of love without being gaudy, cheesy, or over-the-top. And after Valentine's Day is over they aren't so themed you can't continue to display and use them the rest of the year. 7" or 9" high, $79-$110.

DayNa Decker Chandels

The Botanika candle from DayNa Decker doesn't just burn, it also makes a soft crackling noise thanks to the ecowood wick. Unfortunately the website, doesn't give us any info on scent but the candles sell for $45.

Lafco Home Candles

Filed under: Decor, Cosmetics and Fragrance

I love the fragrance floor plan on the Lafco website. It is set up like the floor plan of a home, click on a room and it takes you to the candle for that room. Examples include cilantro orange for the kitchen, chamomile lavender for the master bedroom and fresh-cut gardenia for the living room. The candles each in a glass holder, sell for $48 each.

Nina Campbell Match Strikers

The weather has barely begun to get colder here in the Midwest (we're having 80 degree days mixed in with a few frosty nights) but I'm already finding myself lighting up scented candles all around the house. And what better way to keep matches handy than in one of these beautiful Match Strikers from Nina Campbell. Available in small, medium, and large sizes and a variety of colors and patterns they look beautiful both in a grouping or on their own. And while you're at it check out the scented candles so you have something new and beautiful to light (Ruby sounds good to me).

The Match Strikers vary in price from £199 (small) to £454 (large).

Lee Hale Bird Feet Candle Holders

If you're looking to put some "creepy" on your table then these Lee Hale Bird Feet candle holders could be what's missing. I'm all about the outdoors and generally gravitate towards things with a natural theme, but these decapitated bird feet are not appealing to me at all. They even look a little violent, what with the big claws and all.

But obviously somebody in the world must love them, and differences in taste is what makes everything interesting. So if you think these are beautiful then great for you -- just 60,000 yen for the pair.

Arim Candle Holder and Bud Vases

These Arim Candle Holder and Bud Vases are inspired by contemporary influences combined with ancient Turkish forms. Mouth blown out of lead-free crystal, the slim stems and pastel coloring fits well with their name (arim), which in Turkish means "sweetheart." It's too bad they don't make a variety of sizes, as I'd love a grouping all bunched together with white blooms in each, but that's not to say one as part of a summer centerpiece wouldn't be gorgeous also. They are only available in two colors, green and blue, and are actually quite tall at 14". $215 each.

The Malone Luxury Candle, in Grapefruit

Filed under: Decor, Cosmetics and Fragrance

Candles are one of those things that although they seem to be everywhere we look, they continue to be as popular as ever and we just can't seem to get enough. They add such a wonderful warmth and ambience to a room -- for example this Grapefruit Luxury Candle from Jo Malone will fill your home with a unique and uplifting spicy citrus scent comprised of grapefruit, tangerine, vetiver, and rosemary. It has a stylishly understated design so it will add to your decor without competing for too much attention.

Priced at $345, The Luxury Candle is also available in scents other than grapefruit, plus the website offers suggestions on what scents go well together so different rooms can blend seamlessly.

Point a la Linge Molded Candles

I tend to choose candles based on scent rather than appearance but the French company, Point a la Linge, makes candles you might want to choose for their looks alone. They make candles in the shape of flowers, vegetables and Greek columns. The candles are made of colored wax which is then hand painted. The candles are almost too pretty to burn but some, like the peas in the pea pod shown here can be burned and then replaced. The prices are reasonable, most candles are in the $15 to $30 price range with refills priced under $10.

Apotheia Candles

Filed under: Decor, Cosmetics and Fragrance

Apotheia Aromatic Candles won the award for the best interior scent of the year in 2006 from the Fragrance Foundation and their packaging won the Best Design award from the American Institute of Graphic Arts. The candles come in eleven different scents, each with its own personality. Bronzed, for example, has orange highlights and the urban-inspired Scene uses juniper, pepper and fig to capture the sweetness of night life in the city. Our top pick, especially with awards season (and awards after-parties) already upon us, is Velvet Rope, a scent meant to stimulate the senses, "a dry vanilla martini spiked with absolute jasmine and a twist of grapefruit." Price: $46.

Embers Massage Candle

Soy candles seem to be getting more and more popular, but jummyjane's Embers Candles offer s unique feature that most other candles do not. They are made with cosmetic-grade wax that has a low melting point and can be poured off of the candle and used as a massage oil. The all natural paraffin-free wax is enhanced with "natural plant extracts to nourish the skin" and is available in three different scents: habanero and grapefruit, ginger and date, and lychee and lapsang. Price: $48.

Tapers With Ismir Vase

I keep my extra tapered candles in a drawer, but the idea of putting them into an elegant display as a way of storing them is a good one, especially if you tend to keep candles that are all of the same color, or at least color coordinated. The Tapers With Ismir Vase set includes 24 ivory candles and a lovely handblown glass vase for displaying them. You can even treat the tapers like flowers and change the arrangement to suit the seasons, or remove them to make use of the 8-in. high vase for real flower arrangements. Price: $70.

A Tree of Lights

Real candles used to be the traditional decorations for Christmas trees, but the fire hazard presents far more risk than the average person is going to want to take in his or her home. Electric lights are a fine substitution, but this stainless steel Tree Tealight Holder presents a way to enjoy the flicker of real flames on a tree in a very safe way. The tree stands almost 23 inches tall and holds 13 candles. Price: $205.
