Filed under: Events, Charity, Big Givers

On Nov. 18 the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF) will stage its 12th annual Collaborating for a Cure benefit dinner and auction at the Park Avenue Armory in New York. Building on the success of last year's event (above), which featured a concert by Steely Dan, this year's festivities include a Steve Winwood performance and a charity auction led by Sotheby's' C. Hugh Hildesley. Sure to attract high bids will be 5 pairs of tickets to the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show on Nov. 19, an eye-popping display of supermodels in lingerie. The SWCRF, founded by Dr. Samuel Waxman in 1975, is a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt organization that focuses on the most promising strategies for developing cures and treatments for many types of cancers, as well as preventative measures. SWCRF is at the cutting edge of research into alternatives to the traditional treatments of chemotherapy and radiation.

LuxGoddess.com Hops on the Discount Shopping Site Bandwagon, Donates to CharityDo only the very wealthy pay retail these days? Seems like it. With so many discount shopping sites that sell high-end items, mere mortals can get said high-end items at low(er)-end prices. But is is there room for yet one more of these sites? LuxGoddess.com is hoping so. It recently joined the likes of Bluefly, ShopBop, and Gilt to offer upscale items at reduced prices. Here's what makes LuxGoddess different, however: It donates 10% of its proceeds to Bright Pink, a national nonprofit that provides education and support to young women who are at high risk for breast and ovarian cancer.

Calling itself "the premier site for today's fashion trendsetters looking for great deals on their favorite designer brands," the site carries well-known brands, with a number of items pulled from online stores, and covers the standard categories of apparel, shoes, beauty, and accessories. There's also a sale rack, which is a user's personal sale rack, based on her size and brand preferences.

Jon & Kate Plus 8 star Jon Gosselin (above left) made the scene at the 6th Annual Hamptons Happening to benefit the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF) on July 25th with Lindsay Lohan's father Michael Lohan and his hot young fiancée Erin Muller (above right and center). The threesome attended to show their support for a cause which both Gosselin and Lohan regard as personally important to them. Honorary Chair Costas Kondylis, with Event Co-Chairs Laurie L. Schaffran and Marion Waxman led the evening, helping to raise $265,000 to benefit the SWCRF. Hosted by Susan and Louis Meisel, the festivities were held at The Sagaponack Sculpture Field with Dr. Samuel Waxman as the keynote speaker.

The SWCRF is a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt organization that focuses on the most promising strategies for developing cures and treatments for many types of cancers, as well as preventative measures. SWCRF is at the cutting edge of research into alternatives to the traditional treatments of chemotherapy and radiation. Foundation-supported research includes reprogramming chaotically growing cancer cells to behave normally, understanding cancer stem cells, and mobilizing the immune system. These will hopefully lead to precisely targeted treatments or preventatives which will have minimal side effects on the recipients.

Participating restaurants showing their support at the benefit included Annie's Organic Café, Bobby Van's, Brandt Beef, Cavaniola's Gourmet Cheese Shop, Chef Pierrot Signature Catering, DuFour Pastry Kitchens, The Fudge Shoppe, Ichiban Sushi, il laboratoria de gelato, Kneaded Bread, La Masseria, Leo's Latticini, Magnolia Bakery, Manhattan Chili, Nichol's, Pure Dark, The Seafood Shop, Shun Lee, Susan Meisel, Town Line BBQ and Tutto Il Giorno. Beverages were sponsored by Palm Bay Imports, Imperia Vodka, Fire Island Beer Company, Hampton Coffee Company and Pellegrino/Acqua Panna.

Large Glasses Of Wine Carry Cancer Risk

A glass of wine every day is supposed to reduce heart disease but it may also be hurting your liver. The World Cancer Research Fund in Britain says that a pint of beer or large glass of wine every day increases the risk of liver and bowel cancer by 20%. It's alarming news in Britain where as the Telegraph reports, the NHS released figures showing that middle class people over the age of 45 are the most frequent drinkers in Britain, consuming alcohol on five or more nights a week. This follows a report from the National Audit Office earlier this year which said that 10 million people in the country were drinking to "hazardous'' levels. It is believed that the alcohol damages a person's DNA, making them susceptible to the risk of cancer and even a relatively small amount can make a big difference. There is also evidence that drinking alcohol also increased the risk of breast cancer and cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx and esophagus. The World Cancer Research Fund hasn't advised avoiding alcohol but it did say that the limit per day should be two drinks for a man and one for a woman (one drink is the equivalent of half a pint of beer, less than an ounce of vodka or a little more than four ounces of wine). I'm beginning to pine for the days when a glass of wine was considered to be a healthy indulgence and articles were filled with talk of wine's polyphenols and antioxidants.

Richard J. Solove, real-estate developer and collector of Rolls Royce cars (among other things), is well known for his part in the foundation and generous support of the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and the race to find a cure for cancer. And at 82 years old his giving spirit is stronger than ever as he plans to auction off 13 of the 14 Rolls Royce cars in his collection, with the proceeds going to fund cancer research through the James hospital and its affiliates.

Solove says that he has intended for his Rolls Royce collection to go to the hospital for years, and thought that now was the time while he was still able to enjoy the satisfaction of the contribution. He's quoted as saying "I strive to see a cure for cancer much more than I love my cars."

The auction will take place in August of this year in Pebble Beach, CA, and is expected to raise $15 million dollars or more.

Clearly, the way to make a tool kit more appealing to women is to turn it in to a fashion accessory - and if it happens to tie in with Breast Cancer Awareness month, so much the better. The Little Pink Tool Kit certainly is pretty in pink. The 10-piece general purpose set, where all the ergonomic tools come with matching pink handles, is packed up in a pink tote bag that can be carried about while making any small repairs without looking much different from an ordinary handbag. The site notes that a portion of the proceeds from each sale go towards breast cancer research, although it does not say what portion or how much will be donated. Price: $80.
