Lamborghini and Callaway Golf Drive a New Generation of Carbon Fiber

You might not think there would'd be much crossover between cars and golf clubs. But you'd be wrong. Aside from golf carts on the one hand and using golf club bags as the standard American measurement for a car's trunk capacity, two of the biggest names in performance in their respective fields have come together to develop new construction methods.

The partnership between Lamborghini and Callaway Golf was announced in Paris, where the former unveiled its vision for the future in the form of the Sesto Elemento concept. While researching construction materials together at the University of Washington, the two companies found each other mutually interested in developing a new breed of lightweight, high-strength material.

The result is called Forged Composite, which they've found to be at once stronger, cheaper and more versatile than conventional carbon fiber. We've seen what Lamborghini has in mind for the material. Callaway Golf, meanwhile, plans within the year on phasing in Forged Composite drivers, which they expect will net an 8-yard longer drive than the market-leading titanium drivers which they'll replace.

Dewar's Goes Golfing with Callaway for Charity

Dewar's Blended Scotch Whisky and Callaway Golf Company have teamed up to launch a nationwide sweepstakes and longest drive charity competition across the U.S. where each winner will win a $5,000 prize for the charity of their choice. The partnership coincides with the introduction of Callaway's Big Bertha Diablo Driver and Dewar's 18 Founder's Reserve Scotch (right).

There are three Sweepstakes Grand Prizes of a VIP Golf Experience, which include roundtrip travel for the winner and one guest to the Callaway facility in Carlsbad, California, hotel accommodations, meals, custom Callaway golf clubs professionally fitted by Callaway's experts, a Callaway golf bag and a round of golf with a Callaway-certified instructor. 10 Second Prizes of Callaway's new Big Bertha Diablo driver will also be given away.

Rare whiskies from the different regions of Scotland were carefully selected by the brand's Master Blender for Dewar's 18 Founder's Reserve. The color is a warm, golden amber; vanilla and toffee notes dominate the palette with a mellow, soft sweetness, lingering creaminess and a full bodied oakiness, followed by a long, soft and warming finish with a slight dryness.

Callaway Golf's Sleek New FT-iQ Driver

Ever since its 1991 debut of the Big Bertha, a spatula-shaped driver named after a World War I-era German howitzer, Callaway Golf has earned a reputation for creating clubs that are easy to hit. The latest weapon to emerge from the company's R&D lab in Carlsbad, California, is the Callaway FT-iQ , a sleekly tapered square-shaped driver. Its angular aerodynamics were inspired by the coolly low-slung Lamborghini Reventón (covered by Luxist 16 months ago).

Composed of a titanium face, a carbon-fiber body and an aluminum back cradle fitted with internal weights, the club is designed to launch the ball higher and with less backspin than previous models. A high launch angle and a low spin rate combine to generate optimum carry given a player's swing speed. They also result in a boring trajectory that yields added distance to a drive by producing roll.

Another selling point of the FT-iQ is its promise of straighter shots thanks to an extremely high moment of inertia, the clubhead's resistance to closing at impact. The technology of the clubhead is augmented by a super premium Fubuki shaft from Mitsubishi Rayon, one of the finest shaft-makers in the game. Fans of Callaway's recent drivers will recognize the club's rather muted sound at impact, much softer than the thwack of many titanium models. But don't be fooled: The FT-iQ packs a powerful punch.

Callaway Golf Club To Benefit Ovarian Cancer

If breast cancer support is pink, what color is ovarian cancer? The answer, as shown in this special Callaway golf driver is teal. The teal FT-i golf driver is a limited edition of 1,000 and is part of a line of teal products to benefit ovarian cancer research that include golf balls, hats and towels. The Callaway Golf Company will donate 15% of its net sales from the sale of all teal products, up to a maximum of $200,000, for the Callaway Golf Foundation Women's Cancer Initiative. Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month is in September and the products will be available as of December 1. The golf club sells for $875.
