Cadillac To Reveal New Flagship and CTS-V coupe at Detroit

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Next month at the Detroit Auto Show, Cadillac will be showing off two new cars, a high performance coupe and a new flagship. The new CTS-V coupe is the only publicly confirmed for production. The standard V6 powered CTS coupe debuted earlier this month at the LA Auto Show and the V adds the fabulous 556 hp supercharged V8 from the CTS-V sedan.

The second car which is billed as a concept for now will likely become a production reality in 2011. Cadillac showed the flagship concept dubbed XTS to media last August after GM emerged from bankruptcy. The teaser photo above provides a look at the front corner. The rest of the car is inspired by the Sixteen concept of several years ago. The hood of the XTS is much shorter than the Sixteen which is concieved around a proposed new V16 engine. GM has not said what engine will be in the XTS although a turbocharged and direct injected V6 is much more likely given current economic realities. The XTS is expected to sport all wheel drive.

2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe Debuts at LA Auto Show

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Few thought it could really be done, but with the CTS range, Cadillac has proven itself capable of taking on Europe's finest. The original sedan has since been joined by a sport-wagon, and at the LA show this year, by a new coupe.

Taking its cues from the CTS Coupe Concept that made headlines at the show last year, the version you see here is in full production trim. The front end (from the sharp grille to the swept-back windshield) is identical to the sedan and wagon, but from there back it's all new. The coupe is wider in the rear than the others, and has a lower roofline for a more aggressive stance.

Power comes from the same 3.6-liter V6, but will be joined by the 556hp supercharged V8 from the CTS-V shortly after the coupe hits the market late next year.

Bargain Bin: High-Priced Hybrids Get Hefty Incentives

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Green

Surprise! Lexus and its parent company, Toyota, are apparently finding that it's not as easy selling $106,000 hybrids as it is for $25,000. The Lexus LS 600h L is certainly an excellent piece of automotive engineering, delivering gobs of horsepower and torque with at least a modicum of efficiency thrown in for good measure.

Still, sales of the LS range are down over 50 percent, leading the the Japanese auto giant to place a whopping $10,000 cash incentive on its range-topping hybrid model. Moving down the Lexus lineup a notch will net you a $3,000 incentive on the GS 450h. What's more, the company is throwing another $1,000 at any sales associate that manages to sell one of its pricey hybrids.

Not into expensive hybrid sedans? How 'bout we move to the exact opposite end of the fuel-saving market and into the driver's seat of a 2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid. Signing on the dotted line for GM's top-of-the-line hybrid 'ute will cost you from about $73,000 to over $87,000... minus a five-digit discount, of course. Such a deal!

Review: 2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid Platinum Edition

2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid Platinum Edition - click above for a high res image gallery

Since General Motors debuted its two mode hybrid system two years ago on the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon it has gradually been expanding availability to other examples of its GMT900 full size truck family. One of the newest examples is also by far the most luxurious and most expensive version yet. In fact the Cadillac Escalade hybrid Platinum Edition is the second priciest hybrid available today after the Lexus LS600h.

The base Escalade hybrid is built on the same platform and powertrain bits as its more pedestrian siblings. However, Cadillac has outfitted its version with appearance and equipment that customers of the "wreath and crest" brand expect. For the new Platinum, Cadillac has taken the Escalade several steps beyond that. We were able to spend a week with the big platinum on the South Carolina coast recently and you can find out if it lives up to expectations after the jump.

Cadillac Planning Renaissance With New ATS and XTS Luxury Sedans

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

General Motors may be in trouble, but that doesn't mean they don't have a few more tricks up their sleeves, especially when it comes to their luxury division. And so the troubled American automaker, fresh out of bankruptcy and frantically restructuring, has revealed plans for a pair of new Cadillacs to take the fight to Europe's best in pursuit of the lucrative luxury market.

First up is the ATS, a compact luxury sport sedan aimed to compete with the BMW 3 Series and its ilk. Slotting in below the current CTS, the ATS is expected to be available with four- and six-cylinder engines in either rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive set-ups to offer customers their choice of luxury propulsion.

Next up is a full-size luxury sedan dubbed XTS. Replacing both the DTS and the STS model lines, the XTS is said to closely mirror the styling of the gorgeous Cadillac Sixteen concept car (pictured above), only with a more realistic engine in place of the show car's V16 resulting in more reasonable proportions. Expect both new sedans to debut within the next year or two, at which point the likes of BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus had better take notice.

Barack Obama's Cars Then and Now

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Celebrity Shopping

President-elect Obama's new ride, the Cadillac Presidential Limousine was officially revealed just around the same time another Obama car his 2005 Chrysler 300C Hemi went back up on eBay. Obama leased the car in 2004 and traded it for a Ford Escape Hybrid in 2007. The car was bought by Tim O'Boyle who first tried to sell it on eBay in December. He took it off the site after his accountant told him it was wiser to own the car a year for tax purposes. Now it's back on eBay with a starting bid of $100,000 and a buy-it-now price of $1,000,000. The Kelley's Blue Book value for the car is $15,750. O'Boyle says he received a private offer of $150,000 the last time the car was up for auction and that he has a number in his head of what he wants. The 2005 330C has less than 21,000 miles on it and O'Boyle says it is in like-new condition.

Jaguar To Move Back Upscale?

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Jaguar die-hards scoffed at the X-type when it came out, seeing it as the automaker's attempt to woo drivers with a Cadillac bank account to the high-end brand. Like any automaker's foray into cheaper waters, the volume helped the bottom line for Jaguar, but slumming it may have done damage to the brand. Those die-hards may be in luck -- it seems that the automaker is considering axeing the X-type from its lineup.

Jaguar introduced the X-type in 2001 to attract the typical BMW 3-series owner, but stuffy styling, a Ford platform and quality issues held the model back from breaking the 100,000 unit/year barrier. Despite the drawbacks, the model accounts for as much as 60 percent of Jaguar's sales depending upon the market. As Jaguar plans its future, it may axe the X-type, despite the model's impact upon the automaker's financial success.

The move comes as Jaguar aims to move back upscale to a lower volume, higher profit situation, which it may be pursuing in order to be more attractive to would-be investors should Ford decide to put Jaguar on the bloc k. Instead of the X-type, Jaguar dealers will rely upon the XF, the S-type's replacement, for its sales. More comparable to a 5-series or Mercedes E-class sedan, the XF as the entry level vehicle should move Jaguar back up the ladder perception-wise. Other new models, such as the XK, will also be important as Jaguar seeks to come back from its slump.

Seven Cycles IMX: a Titan in Titanium

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

I am grateful to the aerospace industry for so many things: Airbus, NASA, SkyMall magazine ...

But I am especially grateful to the aerospace industry for its use of titanium, the space-age metal that used in airplane construction. Simultaneously unbreakable, indefatigable, corrosion-proof and ultralight, titanium is also totally dope.

Equally dope is Seven Cycles of Watertown, Massachusetts, which has been making bicycle frames from titanium since 1997.

With summer around the bend, I've got a jones for the IMX, Seven's flagship  titanium/carbon mountain bike. The frame alone is $3,395. Steep, yes. But think of it like the two-wheeled equivalent of a tailor-made suit.

That $3,395 includes custom sizing, yes, but it also includes dialed-in custom handling and ride characteristics (do you want Cadillac comfortable? Formula-1fast?). Decal choice is also part of the deal, as is making sure the frame is compatible with the exact components you choose.

In other words, the aerospace-quality bike frame you get is an honest-to-god one-of-a-kind.

Can you say that for a Boeing 747? I didn't think so.

It's time to check out the goods for the next Barrett-Jackson auction. The next auction, in Palm Beach, March 30 and April 1 will include two of Dr. Phil's exotic rides. The talk show host is unloading a  2002 Ferrari 360 Spider and a 2001 Gemballa Porsche Turbo. The Ferrari has titanium paint, chrome wheels and a blue convertible top with matching interior and the  black Porsche is a 911 Turbo modified by Gemballa with a 415-horsepower 6-cylinder engine and upgraded performance suspension. The cars should both bring in six figures. Also on sale is  a 2006 Cadillac CTS owned by musician Paul McCartney. The car was built for  McCartney with no animal products  and proceeds from the sale of McCartney's car will go to Adopt-A-Minefield.

Frank Sinatra Car on eBay

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

With celebrity cars on eBay it's often a case of caveat emptor. This baby blue 1975 Cadillac Fleetwood is said to have once been owned by Frank Sinatra. The car has around 75,000 miles on it and comes with an eight track AM/FM stereo, five cigarette lighters, power door locks, cruise control, power seats, light blue tinted windows and blue leather upholstery. The ownership hasn't been positively verified but there is a plaque in the car that says it was built for Frank Sinatra by GMC and Sinatra's initials are on the trunk. It has a starting bid of $35,000 and last time we checked there were no bids.
