Precious Cachaca Sold At Christie's

Cachaça is certainly having its moment lately. The Moodie Report says that five rare bottles of Sagatiba Preciosa cachaça have just been sold for almost £2,500 at Christie's Brazil becoming the first cachaça to be sold at Christie's. The first bottle in a limited-edition numbered bottling of the 23-year-old liquor sold for £550. Each bottle comes in a handcrafted Brazilian wood case. The Sagatiba Preciousa was distilled in 1982 and matured in European oak barrels. Less pricey versions of Satatiba are also available.

It's hotter in the U.S. than in Brazil right now, how about a Brazilian drink to cool off? Cachaca, the key ingredient in a delicious drink known as the caipirinha, is making a play for U.S. drinkers. Cabana Cachaca is a new cachaca with a sleek design to tempt the unfamiliar into testing it out. The liquor is fermented and distilled in Brazil directly from freshly pressed sugarcane. The spirit is distilled in small batches to create artisanal rum with a citrusy nose. Cabana Cachaca is now available in a variety of locations and will be availably nationally at the start of August. It sells $34.99 per 750-milliliter bottle. The question is do enough U.S. drinkers know about cachaca to make this a hit spirit?
