Z Gallerie Skull Red Wine

Most of the time wine is presented as upscale, reserved, and elegant, but Z Gallerie went a slightly different direction with with Skull Red Wine. The label art, designed by and for Z Gallerie exclusively, is a fairly gritty looking black and white human skull. I like it, and although it is a little "dark" in mood I think it still has an interesting elegance about it -- just with an extra edge. The wine inside is a 2005 Miramonte Cabernet Sauvignon with blueberry, blackberry, and bing cherry notes along with lavender, fresh mocha, and toasted oak. $65

First Blush Varietal Grape Juice, Wine Varietals Without The Buzz

I recently came across this product in Whole Foods and had to try it out. First Blush makes varietal grape juices: Cabernet, Merlot, Chardonnay, and a rosé juice made from Zinfandel. Each juice is made from 100% wine grape varietal without any added sugar. The 16-ounce bottles sell for around $4 a bottle. What does it taste like? I bought the Merlot and basically, it's just really good grape juice, sweet and fruit-packed.

Amici Cellars Wine Week Package

How about a vacation where your souvenir is 288 bottles of wine (or rather, the promise of those bottles of wine). That's the offer from Amici Cellars. John and Sharon Harris of Amici Cellars rent out two villas, one in St. Emilion in Bordeaux and one in Napa Valley. Both are available for rent for $25,000 to $36,000 a month rent, depending on the season. They also offer a special package during harvest season (usually September and October). Their seven-day package in Napa includes seven nights at the Domaine Beau Soleil villa (check out the view from the pool above), hands-on wine making instruction, harvesting, private winery tours, food and wine pairing lessons and even spa treatments. At the end of your week, you leave and your Amici Cellars, Single-Designated Hillside Jericho Canyon Cabernet stays for 18-24 months where it rests in French oak barrels. Once your wine is ready it will be specially labeled and bottled with your name on it. The package sells for $32,000.

Cuvée Julia Collection

I've sung the praises of the Cuvée Julia from Delectus vineyard before. The pricey Cabernet-heavy, Bordeaux-like blend sells out each year since only 200 cases are made each year. Each year's vintage also has a distinctively adorable label that relates to Julia, winemaker Gerhard Reisacher's beloved daughter. Now you can pick up a vertical of the vintages 1999 through 2004. The winery is selling 40 wooden six-packs. on a first-come, first-serve basis. The collection sells for $1200 retail or $960 for their wine club members.

Stag's Leap Appellation Collection

For lovers of Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, the Stags Leap District Winegrowers Association 10th Anniversary Appellation Collection is a big box of happiness. This limited collection of 15 bottles is available only through the Association. This collection of 2003 wines includes new cuvees from Cliff Lede Vineyards and Silverado Vineyards and debut releases of new members, Griffin Vineyards and Taylor Family Vineyards. It sells for $1200 and there are just 300 cases available.

Covenant Kosher Wine

Covenant Wines are said to be some of the world's finest kosher wines and possibly the best made in the United States. The wines are all Cabernet Sauvignons from Napa Valley, California. The 2003 vintage has received a rating of 92 points from Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate awarded it with 93 points and the 2004 vintage with a 90-92. The deep red wines boast a richly fruity array of flavors, with notes of black currant and blackberry, while scents of vanilla and hints of oak hit the nose.  Price: $74.95.

Limited Edition Celebrity Wines

Celebrity Cellars has brought us Madonna-themed wine in the past and now they are releasing several new varieties of celebrity wines. Kiss This is a wine dedicated to the band KISS, featuring artwork from their 1978 Destroyer album on the bottle. The wine itself is actually a 2004 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon with notes of plum, cherry and cassis. 1000 bottles of Kiss This are available at $100 per bottle.

The Rolling Stones Collection features 8 different etched designs on various kinds of wine. Designs range from the Classic Tongue logo to the Spiky Tongue, which commemorates a 1994 world tour.  The available wines include everything from a nonalcoholic Unwine at $25 each to a 2004 Dry Creek Cabernet Sauvignon at $100 per bottle.

One World Wine

It's becoming a bit of a trend, wines from around the world, marketed under a single label. We recently saw this with Sauvignon Republic. A new brand from UK company Halewood International, One World will pull together worldwide wines at a lower price point than some of the options we have seen before. The brand will launch in April and will include  Orange Street Ruby Cabernet Merlot and Chenin Blanc from South Africa and Ocean Point Shiraz and Chardonnay from Australia. Orchard Boulevard from Argentina will come out later this year and other wines (probably with a similar naming scheme) may come out later. The inexpensive wines (under $10) are aimed young wine drinkers who are expanding their palates.
