Best Family Vacations Around the World

Scottish Pursuits at Gleneagle Hotel in Scotland
Luxist readers have nominated their favorite luxury destinations for families around the world. From Scotland to Hawaii and South Africa, these destinations offer wonderful programs tailored specifically for children, in addition to luxurious accommodations and other incredible amenities.

The top five summer vacation destinations for families, according to our readers, include:

Gleneagles Hotel

When the Gleneagles Hotel opened in 1924, it was described as 'a Riviera in the Highlands' and 'the eighth wonder of the world'. Then as now, the Gleneagles Hotel was the glorious playground for people dedicated to leisure and pleasure in the most luxurious surroundings.

Set in 850 acres of Perthshire countryside, Gleneagles is a unique place for families to escape. It is home to three of the top Scottish Championship Golf Courses and also offers a wide range of exhilarating outdoor leisure activities, all of which exemplify the longstanding Scottish sporting heritage.

Gleneagles is like going to camp as a family, albeit a luxurious one, with its world-class sporting schools. Dedicated to the cultivation of classic sportsmanship, the schools offer children and adults rewarding 'hands on' instructional programs, fueling the trend to learn while on vacation and introducing the simple pleasures of country sports to families.

World-class instruction is offered in a variety of outdoor pursuits including Falconry (where kids take part in a falconry lesson and learn how to cast the hawk from their gloved hand and then call it back), Horseback Riding, Fishing, Shooting and Archery. There's a Golf Academy as well as a Gundogs School which offers a unique opportunity to experience gundog training. There's also a Junior Off Road and All-Terrain Off Road Course available for kids aged four to nine. Here, kids learn valuable driving skills at the wheel of mini Land Rover replicas over a purpose built course, designed to mimic the grown ups' off road course. Children ten years or older learn how to operate Argo cats, which are eight-wheel-drive, all-weather, all-terrain, tiller-controlled vehicles that operate on land and in water on a challenging purpose-built course.

Luxury River Barge Trip in Burgundy with Abercrombie & Kent

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

River Barge Trip through Burgundy, France with Abercrombie & Kent
Abercrombie & Kent
offers many once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for family vacations, but one of the most special trips has got to be its river barge cruise through the Burgundian countryside. A chartered seven day cruise aboard La Belle Epoque, A&K's 126-foot-long, 16.5 feet wide barge, is a luxurious and relaxing way to travel and to taste award-winning Burgandy wines, and hence is nominated for a Luxist Award for Best Luxury Family Summer Vacation.

The barge, which is equipped with six cabins, all outside facing and each equipped with en-suite bathrooms. There's one deluxe double cabin; one deluxe twin/double; two twin/double cabins and two cabins each with twin beds. There's also a small swimming pool, a sauna and several sun decks. Bicycles are also available for those wanting to cycle in the towns the barge visits. A gourmet chef is on board to prepare all of the meals, which are included in the cost of the excursion.

The seven-day-long itinerary commences in Venarey-les Laumes. After a champagne welcome, there is time to settle in before dinner on board the barge. On day 2, after lunch, you will visit 12th-century Fontenay Abbey with its peaceful gardens and beautiful cloisters. On the third day, you will cruise to Ravières passing the 18th-century Forges de Buffon. It was here that the great naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon commercially exploited his scientific discoveries by harnessing the waters of the River Armançon to power the water mills. Barge guests will visit the hilltop village of Flavigny (where the film Chocolat was made) and then continue to ancient Alesia, site of the last battle between the Gauls and the Romans in 52 BC.

The Man With The Golden Cellar Wine Auction

How's this for a titillating name for a wine auction: on October 26 and 27, Acker Merrall & Condit in New York is holding an auction of a mysterious collector known only as "The Man With The Golden Cellar." The auction's 248-page catalog details the 1,959 lots that the 11,474-bottle cellar has been broken down into. You want red Burgundy? Try 4,838 bottles of it including lots from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Leroy, Jayer and Rousseau. The sale is also rich in white Burgundy and First Growth Bordeaux from notables such as Lafleur, Petrus and the always craveable Cheval Blanc. Champagne? But of course, dating back to 1928 and Chateau d'Yquem, Port and some truly ancient Madeira is in there too. The entire cellar could bring in $20 million.

No Ratatouille Wine After All

A few weeks ago, we heard news that there would be a wine associated with the Disney movie Ratatouille. But it turns out that the wine won't be making it to stores after all. Walt Disney has announced that they are not releasing the wine after all. The reason? The LA Times reports that Disney was getting too much pressure from California winemakers and opponents of underage drinking. Disney says that the California Wine Institute was upset because it was a French wine but a California Wine Institute spokeswoman said that they were upset because the label, which showed the cartoon rat, Remy , holding a glass of wine, would appeal to people below the legal drinking age. The offering was to be small, around 500 cases. I wonder what will happen to the wine, if it will be destroyed or find its way onto the market in some quiet and more limited way.

Montrachet Sells Off The Cellar

There have been a lot of exciting wine auctions this spring. The Spring auction from Zachy's in New York on May 11 gives you the chance to own wines from the cellar at Montrachet, a wine-oriented restaurant in New York which closed last year but may yet reopen at a later date. Meanwhile they are selling off a bunch of their cellar. Decanter reports that the 536 lots Zachy's hopes to sell include 383 of red and white Burgundy, ranging through the 1980s, 1990s and the current decade. The restaurant had been open since 1985, plenty of time to stock up on a wealth of treasures. The Zachy's website has details of the lots and the absentee bidder form.

Case of Wine Sells For Over $170,000

Yet another wine record has been broken. At a Christie's auction in New York on Thursday, a six-magnum case of the famed 1985 Romanee-Conti from Burgundy sold for $170,375 dollars besting a Romanee-Conti record set only in January of $136,000 for the 1971 vintage. Each magnum is two bottles so the price works out to over $14,000 a bottle. According to the AFP, five other lots also went for over $100,000 including a double-magnum of Chateau Cheval-Blanc 1947 that went for $135,125 dollars. California wines are starting to get pricey too, a lot of 21 bottles of Napa Valley's Screaming Eagle spanning the 1995-2002 vintages sold for  $52,875 dollars.
