Charlie Palmer Becomes The Latest Celebrity Chef With A Burger Joint

charlie palmerChef Charlie Palmer, like many other celebrity chefs, is turning his attention to the burger. Palmer is opening DG Burger, a space within his existing restaurant, Charlie Palmer at Bloomingdale's in the South Coast Plaza shopping center in Costa Mesa, California. The initials stand for "Damn Good Burger."

Palmer will have plenty of competition in the burger world: Bobby Flay runs Bobby's Burger Palace; Emeril Lagasse has Burgers and More by Emeril and in the same South Coast Plaza mall, chef Marcus Samuelsson's Marc Burger has a spot at Macy's. Laurent Tourondel opened LT Burger over the summer and Richard Blais, who was on "Top Chef," is the chef behind Flip Burger Boutique. The Wall Street Journal traces the start of the trend to chef Hubert Keller who opened Burger Bar in 2004.

DG Burger opens this week with only one burger: Palmer's signature DG Burger, a version of the seasonally changing burger that has been on the menu at the full-service restaurant since it opened in 2008. It is made of Black Angus beef topped with cabbage, tomato, red onion and a secret sauce on a semolina-potato bun. It sells for $7.95. Executive Chef Amar Santana will serve up casual fare including garlic sausage sandwich with roasted peppers, salads, citrus glazed beef or chicken skewers and crispy fries with accompaniments of curry ketchup, bacon mayo, roasted garlic sour cream or chipotle aioli. According to National Restaurant News there are no plans to expand the DG Burger concept to other locations.

Otarian Carbon-Friendly Vegetarian Dining

Otarian Vegetarian Eco-Friendly Fast FoodThe words vegetarian, eco-friendly, and fast food have not gone together until now, under the name Otarian. Founded by Radhika Oswal, a woman who described herself as a "hungry vegetarian" and pitched the idea to her husband 3 years ago after being frustrated at not being able to find anything but "pizza and french fries" while traveling.

And so Otarian was born, a fast food chain that not only serves "global vegetarian cuisine" but does so in an eco-conscious and sustainable way. "This isn't a chain of vegetarian restaurants, but a chain of sustainable restaurants," Oswal says. Everything from the as-local-as-possible food to the way the buildings are constructed to the packaging and production practices of the stores is geared towards being ecologically responsible. They even label each sandwich and combo meal with its carbon number and the carbon number of a similar meat dish, so you can see how much you've offset by choosing vegetarian.

Currently there's an Otarian located on Bleeker Street in NYC, with another planned to open in the city this Friday (the 23rd) near Columbus Circle at 8th Ave and 56th St and two more planned to launch soon in London. Stop by and grab a Portobello Mushroom Burger (shown here) for lunch and do your part for the planet.

Burger King's $200 Burger

Of all the restaurants that might offer a $200 truffle-laden burger on their menu Burger King is probably one of the last ones, if not the last one, that comes to mind. But believe it or not Burger King has launched a $200 hamburger called simply "The Burger" that features Wagyu beef, white truffles, Pata Negra ham slices, Cristal onion straws, Modena balsamic vinegar, lambs lettuce, pink Himalayan rock salt, organic white wine, and shallot-infused mayonnaise all served up on an Iranian saffron and white truffle dusted bun.

That's quite a list of ingredients.

"The Burger" will be on sale once per week in London and proceeds go to benefit the Help a London Child charity.

There's a $5,000 Burger in Las Vegas

The Fleur de Lys restaurant in Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay may serve French cuisine but that hasn't stopped them from adapting their own version of an American classic: the hamburger. Called the "Fleurburger 5000" it's no Plain Jane either, featuring a juicy Kobe beef patty topped with a rich truffle sauce and served on a brioche truffle bun. And this burger comes with its own beverage, a bottle of 1990 Chateau Petrus, that is served in Ichendorf Brunello stemware that you get to keep.

It sounds (and looks) delicious -- as well it should for the whopping price tag of $5000. And if you do decide to indulge no worries about bragging rights: you can bring a friend (they get a free burger when you order yours) and you'll also get a certificate in the mail (along with your keepsake glass) so you'll have both a witness and paper proof.
