Burberry Launches a Beauty Line

Plaid, tartan, checked -- these are all patterns that I'd be most appalled to see on my face, even after a night of hard pillow-printing sleep, but Burberry -- best known for its classic "haymarket check" pattern on umbrellas, luggage and trench coat linings is betting the world's wealthy women will think differently.

The brand has just launched a beauty line, which it's selling at Nordstrom.com. It includes a full line of makeup, supposedly inspired by the "touch and feel of lightweight Burberry outerwear fabrics – the last layer you put on," according to the breathless press materials I received.

It all sounds rather...weatherproof...to me, and the colors also sound a bit grim: hues are described as greyed-off, smoky, dusty, trench and Gabardine.

Now, Burberry invented Garbardine in the late 19th century -- it's a fabric that's hard-wearing and weatherproof. This all sounds like something I'd like to use to coat a fence, not my forehead. On the other hand, these lovely ladies above look like they'd still look pretty good after a hard British rain shower, so maybe that's the point.

leather handbagWhispering dreams of warmer weather to come, this spring's must-have bag will be the Burberry Prorsum Medium Maggie Leather Shoulder Bag (although the name could use a little shortening). The stone leather twisted like a well-made gown is marked with pewter-tone hardware (my favorite of the metallic tones). The single handle and zip-top closure secure your belongings while the Burberry-checked interior organizes your items with three internal patch pockets and one zipped pocket. Burberry Sport Fragrance
Burberry has come out with a set of fragrances to compliment their new performance wear collection of apparel named Burberry Sport. The men's version is a union of marine breeze and juniper berries with a woody base and top notes of ginger, wheatgrass, and grapefruit. For women (the packaging is mostly white instead of black) it has magnolia and honeysuckle paired with a base of musky cedarwood and top notes of mandarin, ginger and sea salt. They certainly sound fresh and sporty, buy them from Burberry.com for $57-$78.

Burberry Check Print Knotted Shoulder Bag
Of course Burberry never seems to get it wrong, this time doing understated and timeless chic in a mix of signature checks and finely arranged knots in the Check Print Knotted Shoulder Bag. Primarily khaki with hints of red, white, and gray in the oversized pattern, this versatile day bag has goldtone hardware, a small but prominently placed logo plaque, and a single rolled leather handle. Burberry Check Hearts Satchel, Handbag of the Day

BurberryThe Burberry Check Hearts Satchel is a lovely Valentine's gift or seasonal accessory.

Whether it's given to you by your handsome lover or not, this satchel is a sweet, whimsical way to carry Burberry while love is in the air. Their traditional check pattern is adorned with soft, airy pink hearts and enclosed in sexy, deep red patent leather details. This "someone loves me" purse is 11"W X 7½"H X 6"D, has double handles and metal feet, and includes dangly heart charms -- which you can remove if that's just too much love.

While wearing any kind of "themed" accessory can be tricky, this bag makes embarrassment unlikely, as it is decidedly casual. The trouble with most holiday-wear is that it gives the impression of trying too hard. With a bag like this and a pair of jeans, no one will accuse you of making a spectacle of yourself or pushing the romance too far. Only on Valentine's Day itself (or when attending related events) should you pair this satchel with anything other than your most casual jeans or pants.

So, we love this, but encourage you to use it with caution.

The Burberry Check Hearts Satchel is available from Saks Fifth Avenue for $650.00.

Emma Watson's Spring 2010 Burberry Campaign (and Missing Limb)

Emma Watson Burberry Photoshop
Harry Potter star Emma Watson is growing up, and she's doing it in style by aligning herself with the iconic fashion house Burberry. She started last fall and this year for the spring campaign she's as pretty and grown-up looking as ever. She did the shoot with her brother Alex Watson (above) as well as George Craig, Max Hurd, and Matt Gilmour.

The images are pretty much what you'd expect, crisp and classic and showcasing the season's trendy trench coats and iconic checked handbags, but one photo has been getting a lot of news due to a missing limb. In the picture above Emma's right leg seems to go mysteriously missing somewhere near the knee. Photoshopping error or just a weird angle? Who knows, I think it's an odd pose altogether. See more shots in the gallery below.

Burberry Painted Hearts Tote, Handbag of the Day

Burberry Painted Hearts HandbagRing in the New Year with a Burberry. There's a hint of the expected brand check pattern but this Painted Hearts Tote is mostly about shades of red, white, and hearts. Canvas body with tonal leather trim and a padded hanging heart charm with chain detail round out the style features, while a zip top, top handle with ring attachments, and gunmetal hardware cover the rest. It's especially tiny (which I didn't immediately guess based on 'tote' in its name) measuring only 5" x 7 1/2" x 2". $295

For us, fall in the country always evokes a sporting aesthetic which has its roots in England but is not necessarily strictly limited to the UK. Country pursuits pursued with panache as hunting and shooting are in England easily translate to picturesque parts of the States, while retaining elements of the sporting tradition that transcends fads and fashions. As Bernhard Roetzel remarks in his brilliant book Gentleman: A Timeless Fashion, "We have to thank these once feudal and even today only partly democratized pleasures of rural life for a style of dress that continues to demonstrate its timelessness," evocative as they are of "traditions that stretch back for generations and epitomize the English countryside."

As Roetzel notes, one does not need to be an enthusiastic hunter to take pleasure in certain pieces of clothing that were originally conceived for shooting; nor does one necessarily need to trek all over the countryside merely because one has purchased an SUV. However it is well worth putting both the SUV and the clothing to its original purpose, if only as Roetzel notes to "show them in their original environment just once before they become mere quotations in our everyday wardrobe." We are not quite so despairing of the fate of sporting authenticity, but even if your pleasure in such items is purely vicarious we feel no one of style can not be inspired by classic designs such as the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, Barbour's British country clothing and even a fine Italian shotgun.

As followers of The Classicist will recall, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class debuted back in 1979, and has been an automotive design icon known as much for rugged good looks as versatility ever since; what other vehicle after all can lay claim both to having won the famous Paris-Dakar Rally and being deemed a worthy means of transport for the Pope? The model featured here is the top of the line G55 AMG (you can read all about it here). Famed British clothing company J. Barbour & Sons, known for their iconic waxed jackets which are as practical as they are stylish, was founded in 1894 and holds Royal Warrants from HM Queen Elizabeth II, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, and HRH The Prince of Wales. The jackets shown here are from their great new fall collection.

As for some of the other elements featured herein, these include the amazing Apex from Caesar Guerini, makers of fine Italian shotguns; a chronoscope by Swiss watchmaker JeanRichard; classic handcrafted rubber hunting boots from Le Chameau, founded in France in 1927; the Classic Malts Selection, the prestigious portfolio of single malts from Scotland's six distilling regions; the Leica D-LUX 4 Safari edition digital camera; the latest model sunglasses from Burberry and Dolce & Gabbana, both available at Ilori, and Cinzia Designs; and items from Ralph Lauren, Loro Piana, Beretta and others. As for the setting, the picturesque Northern Catskill Mountains provided the backdrop. See the gallery for full details.

Burberry Check Hobo, Handbag of the Day

burberry check hobo
Perhaps it is because I'm often drawn to classic styles, simple colors and subtle sophistication, or maybe it is because Burberry has a propensity for making fantastic handbags, but this Check Hobo is fabulous. With tiny pleats and patent leather trim the black and white nylon check pattern is encircled in high-society style. This bag is fully lined, includes inside pockets, zipper closure, and a single strap with a seven-inch drop. Classy, timeless and perfect for any occasion, the hobo is definitely for me! ($695 -- 9" x 14 1/2" x 2")

Burberry Nova Check Satchel, Handbag of the Day

Burberry Nova Check SatchelThe Burberry Nova Check Satchel is a complex and beautiful bag.

The rich, dark nickel encases a layer of PVC in a pattern you might recognize -- the cutouts can be misleading but look closely: It's the classic Burberry check pattern. This bag interprets the iconic print in a totally new (or shall we say "nova") way.

The haphazard cutout style gives fresh air to this simple shape, and its size (10"H x 15"W x 6 1/2"D) is large enough to tote around even your work portfolio. This bag exudes class with flair -- and is perfect for the high power woman with a feminine side.

The Burberry Nova Check Satchel is available from Neiman Marcus for $1,195.

Burberry Summer Straw Tote, Handbag of the Day

Burberry does great when it comes to designing bags that are stylish and trendy but still versatile enough to carry for more than one season or year. This Summer Straw Tote is total simplicity, with the Burberry check pattern only faintly visible on the buff-toned raffia. Other features include leather double handles, gunmetal hardware, protective feet on the bag's base, and a magnetic snap closure. It also has a full lining (with logo pattern) and a couple of basic interior pockets. Available at Bloomingdales for $695 (also in blue).
