$44 Million Yacht Tops Robb Report's 'Ultimate Gifts'

Filed under: Jewelry, Yachts & Sailing, Luxury Cars & Autos, Wings, Holiday Guides, Wealth

It seems that Robb Report, the glossy chronicle of the filthy rich, has come back down to Earth a bit after last year's offering of the world's most expensive Christmas present, a matching custom private jet and megayacht set costing $500 million. Each year the profligate publication features an Ultimate Gift Guide, a seasonal offering of over-the-top exclusives. This year's sybaritic selections top out at a measly $44 million, which gets the recipient Aquos Yachts' 164-ft. expedition superyacht Star Fish to be delivered in 2012 and a luxurious three-week, 10-person charter trip aboard her sister ship, the 148-ft. Big Fish, while you're waiting. Among the other big ticket items for the price-is-no-object set:

VIDEO: Proof that the Bugatti Veyron is a Powerful Aphrodisiac

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Wealth, Video

Yes, it's true: if you drive a Bugatti Veyron women will literally throw themselves at you even if you look like Barry Diller on a bad hair day. We're not merely speculating, either - this is an actual video clip of just such an occurrence. The episode in question features an elderly fellow in a $2 million Veyron Grand Sport cruising one of London's poshest shopping districts. The senior citizen, who is obviously as flush with cash as he is follicularly challenged, attracts the notice of a lithesome twentysomething blonde in very short shorts who approaches the vehicle as a taxi idles behind. Less than a minute later she has asked for the driver's phone number which he happily inputs into her cell phone. His somewhat blasé expression during the transaction, which doesn't even require him to pull over, suggests this sort of thing happens to him all the time. Maybe she just liked the way the all-white Grand Sport matches her all-white outfit, but more likely it was the seductive roar of its 1,001 hp quad-turbocharged DOHC 64-valve W-16 engine – and the man who can afford it.

VIDEO: How NOT to Test Drive a $1.25 Million Bugatti

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Video

There's a right and a wrong way to test drive a Bugatti Veyron. The right way: crank it up past 200 mph on the Autobahn with a coked-out supermodel riding shotgun. The wrong way: back it into a Corolla two minutes after taking the wheel. Here we have a demonstration of the wrong way, courtesy of some hapless schmuck in Chicago with good credit but lousy driving skills. It seems the unfortunate fellow was test driving a $1.25 million 2008 black-and-white Veyron 16.4 with a brown leather interior at Chicago's Bentley Gold Coast when he clipped an idling Toyota for no apparent reason while backing out of the dealership. He then proceeded to scrape up the Veyron's front bumper on the pavement while pulling forward to extricate himself. All in all he caused an estimated $30,000 worth of damage, or enough for a couple of brand new Corollas. Adding insult to injury he didn't even buy the Bugatti.

Buyer Renegs on $700,000 Bid for a Bugatti Veyron

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Auctions

If you're going to place a bid at an auction, you'd better make sure you have the cash to back it up. Especially if its an item as high-value as a Bugatti Veyron.

One such supercar went across the auction block recently at Barrett-Jackson, where a prospective buyer on-premises placed a $700,000 bid, beating out several rivals calling in their bids by phone. But then the winner refuses to pay, claiming that he didn't mean to bid but was just trying to help.

The renegging bidder was escorted off the premises, but to save face, Barrett-Jackson's own CEO Craig Jackson pledged to buy it himself, until one of the phone bidders took it off his hands. Seriously, people...we couldn't make this stuff up.

Big Block Winder by OriginTimes

Filed under: Timepieces / Watches, Luxury Cars & Autos

They say that the man with two watches is never sure exactly what time it is. If you have sixteen, though, your problem probably comes closer to keeping them all wound up all the time and ready to wear. Solution: you could get sixteen individual watch winders. Or you could get this.

Starting with the engine block from the Bugatti Veyron, German manufacturer OriginTimes has created a sixteen-cylinder watch winder. Each combustion chamber has been fitted with an individual winder, each calibrated individually according to each timepiece's needs and lined in goatskin to keep them in pristine condition. The price? A cool €75,000 (nearly $100k before taxes), but if you've got sixteen automatic timepieces, we have a feeling the cost won't be an issue.

21-Year-Old Saudi Student's Stunning $10 Million Supercar Collection

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Wealth

Saudi engineering student Dhiaa Al-Essa was one of the unfortunate fellows whose brand new Ferrari 458 Italia (above) went up in flames recently. No worries though – the 21-year-old has 30 other supercars in his $5 million collection, including three more Ferraris, five Porsches, three Lamborghinis, two Rolls-Royces and a Mercedes SLR McLaren. His mega-rich financier father, who purchased the cars for him, has promised him two even more expensive models next year for his 22nd birthday: an ultra-rare Koenigsegg Agera and a Bugatti Veyron, doubling the value of his collection to $10 million. Meanwhile he's replacing the torched 458 Italia with a brand new Ferrari 599 roadster. [continued]

Bugatti Details New Veyron Super Sport at Pebble Beach Debut

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Visitors to the annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance this summer were treated to a wide variety of octane-drenched eye candy, but arguably none as enticing as the new Bugatti Veyron Super Sport.

The ultimate Veyron was announced a few weeks ago when Bugatti took it to a record 268 mph top speed on a closed track. Now that the Super Sport has made its debut, however, the prestige auto marque has graced us with a few more details to fill in the remaining blanks.

To start with, Bugatti will build only 40 examples of the Super Sport, those forty counting towards the 300 total Veyrons that will be built in all before the model rumbles off into the history books. Second, customer models of the Veyron SS will be speed-restricted to 258 mph – which is still faster than just about anything else out there, but 10 mph short of the record speed. Sources speculate that the reason behind the limit comes down to fuel consumption and tire durability, though we doubt any owners will be putting it to the test, anyway.

Rapper Birdman has a shiny new toy, a $2.1 million red Bugatti Veyron. What else would the CEO of a company called Cash Money Records drive? The rapper, also known by his real name, Bryan Williams, filmed the delivery of the car. The video shows the Veyron's large key and a test drive of the car. The Bugatti isn't just expensive to buy, it costs around $300,000 a year to maintain.

Mansory Announces Linea Vincero d'Oro for the Bugatti Veyron

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

With the dozens of special-edition Veyrons which Bugatti itself has rolled out, it's hard to imagine anyone needing to make theirs stand out even more. But for those few, German tuner Mansory has announced the Linea Vincero d'Oro line of accessories.

Upgrading on the existing Linea Vincero, which features glossy carbon-copper bodywork and even more aggressive aerodynamics than the stock Veyron, the Vincero d'Oro features – you guessed it – gold trim. And there's plenty of it, coating the wheels, grille, door handles, mirror housings, fuel filler cap, headlight washer nozzles, headlight surrounds, the roof and various parts of the interior. Mansory has only built the one example, but will be glad to upgrade any existing Veyron to the same effect.

Presenting the new Bugatti Veyron Super Sports: the World's Fastest Car

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Feast your eyes, ladies and gentlemen, on the new Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. Now we know what you're thinking: Bugatti's rolled out dozens of special editions of its iconic supercar over the past few years. But this is a different kettle of fish altogether.

For the long-anticipated Veyron Super Sports – which follows in the tire tracks of upgraded Super Sports models from the marque's history – Bugatti has tweaked the engine to produce an extra 200 horsepower over the "standard" model's 1000. The resulting 1200-horse output, combined with revised aerodynamics, was enough for Bugatti to claim the land speed record at 267.81 miles per hour, achieved at parent company Volkswagen's proprietary Ehra-Lessian test track in the presence of officials from the Guiness Book of World Records and the German Technical Inspection Agency, making it official.

The Veyron Super Sports will be unveiled officially next month at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, after which full details of customer availability will be announced. For now we know that the first five production models will be painted the same black and neon orange paint scheme as the test vehicle you see here.

Solid Gold 1:18 Scale Bugatti Veyron

The Bugatti Veyron is one of the most expensive automobiles in the world. Somewhat paradoxically, a couple of enterprising fellows have managed to craft a replica that's even pricier than the original on which it's based, and they've done it by downsizing.

Of course, the fact that it's made from 24 karat gold and encrusted with 7.2 carats worth of diamonds adds mightily to its £2 million ($2.93 million at today's exchange rates) asking price. Yes, that is indeed a higher sum than it would take to put a real, full-size Veyron in your driveway.

Robert Gulpen of Munich & Stuart Hughes of Liverpool only plan to craft three examples of the 1:18 scale solid gold Bugatti Veyron replica, so we suggest you get on the ball if you've decided your living room mantle. See it in all its fully functional glory in our image gallery below.

Bugatti Working on Electric Supercar to Succeed the Veyron?

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Wondering what will come next from Bugatti now that the Veyron is nearing the end of its production run? According to emerging reports, it could be a very different kind of vehicle altogether.

Rumor has it that Bugatti is developing an electric vehicle, based on the Continental GT from sister company Bentley. The vehicle is said to be powered exclusively by electric motors and an advanced battery pack, delivering the equivalent of 800 horsepower and 1600 lb-ft of torque.

Whether the electric supercar will make it to market – or if it even exists at the moment – remains the subject of much speculation, but stay tuned and we'll be sure to bring you more as the picture becomes clearer.

Florida Fraudster Scott Rothstein's Toys Up For Auction

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Auctions, Crimes and Misdemeanors

rothstein auctionMy colleague Carrie Coolidge has covered the sordid tale of Florida fraudster Scott Rothstein in depth. Rothstein's ill-gotten gains are headed to auction on June 3 at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. VSE Corporation and Rick Levin & Associates, Inc. will conduct the auction of seized and forfeited luxury vehicles and vessels formerly owned by Scott Rothstein and others on behalf of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Most of these luxury vehicles and vessels for auction were property acquired by Rothstein through his involvement in a Ponzi scheme. This property was seized from him as part of the investigation and prosecution of the case against him. He entered a guilty plea in January 2010 and could face charges adding up to 100 years in prison at his upcoming sentencing.

The auction will include some very exotic vehicles for both land and sea including a 2008 Bugatti Veyron, 2009 Bentley Continental GTC, 2007 Rolls - Royce Phantom, 2010 Lamborghini LP-670SV, 2007 87' Warren Yacht, 1998 55' SeaRay Sundancer and many more. Proceeds from the auction will be placed in the U.S. Treasury's AssetForfeiture Fund and net proceeds from the Rothstein assets will be available as restitution to the victims of his crimes. Check out videos of some of the toys for sale including the Veyron and the Warren yacht at the Rick Levin & Associates website.

Dutch Police Impound Bugatti Veyron After Owner's Son Caught Speeding

If you had a Bugatti Veyron in your garage, would you let your 20-year-old son drive it? Then again, if your dad had a Veyron, would you be able to resist the temptation to play Ferris Bueller for the day? In either case, you might want to give it a second thought.

Reports coming in from Holland indicate that local police have impounded one such supercar when the 20-year-old of the owner took it out for a ride, flying by law enforcement at 50 miles per hour over the speed limit. No word on whether the car will ever be returned to its owner, but if it does, we'd suggest he keep those keys well hidden from now on.

Here at Luxist we write a lot about the world's most expensive cars. Now the London Telegraph has compiled a list of the world's most expensive car wrecks, following Jackie Stewart's trashing of a Pagani Zonda supercar in Scotland, which my colleague Noah Joseph reported on last week. Here's the paper's list of flaming Ferraris, burned-out Bugattis and other smashed-up supercars. The values given are those at the time the crashes occurred as calculated by the Telegraph. Let's hope all the insurance was in order:
