There is an amazing calm that spiritual jewelry seems to exude. I don't know if it comes from the craftsmanship, the materials and stones used, or its inherent representation but nonetheless spiritual jewelry causes me to pause for a moment and reflect.

And that was certainly the case when viewing Lydia Courteille's Jade Buddha Pendant ($17,303). Surrounded by diamonds and sapphires and set in 18K gold, the hand carved jade Buddha is incredibly detailed and showcases both a delicateness and strength.

Supreme Buddha Sets Record

In New York at Christies Auction House on Tuesday a new record was set for the most expensive piece of Japanese art ever sold. The Supreme Buddha, an 800-year old depiction of the Dainichi Nyorai, made of Cypress wood and carved by famous artist Unkei, is in fantastic condition and even holds three dedicatory objects within the torso. Expected to sell around 1.5 to 2.5 million dollars, the prized piece actually sold for $14.3 million to a Japanese department store chain Mitsukoshi.

Update: The AFP reports that Shinnyo-en, a Buddhist temple in suburban Tokyo, has revealed that they bought the Buddha with donations from followers, the department store Mitsukoshi bid on behalf of the temple.

The Arts of Buddha Sale

Calling Richard Gere and other deep-pocketed Buddhists, Sotheby's has a sale for you. The Arts of Buddha sale on September 21 in New York offers a gorgeous sampling of Buddhist art stretching back centuries. What is expected to be the top lot at the auction is the gilt copper maitreya which is inset with silver and semiprecious stones. The less than two foot statue which dates back from 13th Century Tibet is estimated to sell for $3.5 million to $4.5 million.
