JJ's Brownies Go Where No Brownie Has Gone Before

We didn't have a brownies category in our recent Luxist Awards Best Sweets contest but if we did JJ's Brownies in the Gainey Ranch area of Scottsdale, Arizona might be a strong competitor. These are serious brownies deep in rich flavors. A tiramisu brownie is a triple chocolate brownie blended with espresso dipped lady fingers and swirled with a sweet cheese. A Mounds brownie combines toasted and flaked coconut in a triple chocolate brownie finished with a toasted coconut icing. The red, white and blueberry brownie is loaded with cranberries, blueberries, walnuts, white chocolate and bittersweet chocolate chips then drizzled with icing.

There are also brownies that use liqueurs for more grown-up flavors. The Cherry Bliss includes Bing cherries, a touch of Amaretto and white chocolate chips. The Funky Monkey has bananas infused with banana liqueur, dark rum, and pecans in a double chocolate brownie and the Raspberry Kiss has raspberries paired with a triple chocolate brownie, a touch of Raspberry di Amore and white chocolate chips. The brownie biz currently operates out of Un Bacio Ristorante but plans are in motion for a new facility and a retail store. Luckily they also have an online business. A brownie tart that serves 8-12 people and comes in flavors like La Grande Dame (a double chocolate brownie with orange, white chocolate chips and Grand Marnier) sells for $35.

Earn Brownie Points on Valentine's Day With This Sweet GiftRight after the winter holidays ended, the Valentine's Day promotions went up and I thought, good grief, already? But yes, already. You have just a few days left to get a special gift for that special someone. Here's an idea: gourmet brownies from Brownie Points. I received a gift from here a few years ago and remember just how luscious these chocolately creations were.

There are brownie gift boxes ($17.99 - $71.99) as well as individual brownies (only $3 each, but really, who can stop at just one?), in flavors such as cappuccino toffee fudge, chocolate caramel sea salt, butterscotch sensations, peanut butter passion, raspberry caramel fudge, and even classic double chocolate chunk. Up now on the site is the special Valentine's Day collection ($17.99 - $125.99), if you'd rather let Brownie Points help you choose a gift. Some items in this collection also feature popcorn and other candy confections.

I may place an order for myself tonight, and hit the gym, pre-emptively, tomorrow.

Amai Champagne Brownies

Amai is a relatively young bakery based in New York that specializes in brownies and other treats made from scratch with all-natural, high quality ingredients. Their flavors tend towards indulgent, but slightly unusual, combinations, such as Luscious Lychee and Mandarin [Orange] Dreams brownies. Slightly less exotic but ideal for the celebratory spirit of the season are Amai's Champagne Brownies. Sold in boxes of four or eight, the dark chocolate brownies have an intense flavor and are topped with a fine champagne glaze, in addition to having a subtle taste of champagne from the sparkling wine mixed into the batter. The 8-brownie pack is $42.

Dolcielo Brownies

Brownies are meant to be thick and fudgy, and while enjoyed by people of all ages, they are best loved by children. Dolcielo Brownies are brownies made with adults in mind, as they come in a variety of unusual, yet decadent, flavors in addition to their original dark chocolate, Divinia. Made with all-natural ingredients and the best quality chocolate, each of the flavors is built on the plain, dark base and is infused with liquors in addition to fruits and nuts. The flavors include apricot, pineapple, plum and cherry. The brownies pictured here are a limited edition called Elegrazia, which features a combination of cranberries, Triple Sec and walnuts. The brownies are $50 per dozen.
