Prince Charles' Ferrari Daytona Up for Auction

1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona - chassis #16531

A very special Ferrari is set to cross the auction block in May. One of only 1,400 examples made, and only 158 in right-hand drive, this metallic blue 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona has some very prominent provenance indeed.

Chassis #16531 most recently appeared on an episode of the hit BBC television program Top Gear, where celebrity presenter Richard Hammond drove it along the riviera from Portofino to Saint-Tropez while his co-host James May raced him in a speedboat. But long before the filming of the episode, its first owner was none other than HRH Charles, Prince of Wales. The car is being auctioned by Historics at Brooklands and is expected to fetch around £180,000 - £210,000.

Ferrari 250 GTO Evocazione at Brooklands Auction

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Auctions

Maybe in a perfect world we could all get our hands on an original Ferrari 250 GTO. Or maybe that would just spoil everything that makes the highly sought-after classic so special. Whichever way you look at it, $18 million is more money than most of us will ever see in our lives. And that's how much an original GTO was estimated to have traded for the last time one sold.

Call this, then, the next best thing. It's a replica, but it's not quite a fake. The owner started with an original Ferrari 330 GT and had it modified to resemble a GTO – specifically the only right-hand drive 4-liter V12 model Ferrari made to compete at Le Mans. Now it's due to cross the auction block on September 25 by Historics at Brooklands in England, where it's expected to fetch a more modest £240,000 ($377,000).

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG DR 520

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Think the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG is powerful enough? With 460 horses under the hood, it'd be hard to surmise otherwise. But feast your eyes on the new DR 520.

A special limited edition for the British market, the DR 520 is the product of the Mercedes Specialist Products Division headquartered at the legendary Brooklands race track in England. It benefits from a 60-horse boost to a dyno-rated 520 – hence the name. The package is completed by matte black or white finish, titanium-finish wheels and chrome, and the AMG Performance Pack Plus with upgraded brakes and engine components.

Only 20 examples will be made in either sedan or wagon body-styles, each carrying a £10k premium over stock at £62,430 or £63,680 respectively.

Vintage Bentley Sells for $1 Million at Brooklands Auction

Think Bentleys have big engines nowadays? then you should see some of the monsters they used to make back in their heyday. Like this, the 4½ Litre.

Now the 4.5-liter displacement by itself may pale in comparison to some Crewe's engines now, like the 6.75-liter V8 and the 6-liter W12. But the 4½ Litre had only four cylinders. And since its construction in 1931, this particular example traveled the world, held by owners in England, the United States, South Africa, Kenya and Japan. Now it's been sold in the inaugural auction by Historics at Brooklands for an impressive £670,500, equivalent to nearly $1 million USD.

historics at brooklands

Whether you're buying or selling, there's no lack of auction houses specializing in classic automobiles. And now there's one more. Called (suitably enough) Historics, the upstart has set up shop at Brooklands, the historic home of motor racing in the UK. And they're preparing to kick off their first auction on June 2 with a $3.7 million docket of classics.

Among those collectible motor cars on consignment for the upcoming event are a 1930 Bentley 4.5 liter Vanden Plas Tourer (estimated at £775,000/$1.1m), a rare Aston Martin DB2/4 Drophead Coupe and a flawless '68 Mini Cooper S. All told, 65 vehicles will be part of the docket early next month, and we look forward to reporting on many more in the future.

Rare Mercedes Prototype Damaged in High-Jacking Attempt

mercedes prototype

A rare Mercedes-Benz prototype being transported from the company's headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany, to its museum in Brooklands, England, was reportedly the target of a robbery attempt when criminals tried to hijack the truck in which it was contained. The vehicle in question, a 1970s-era C111-III, suffered some damage to its front fender and gullwing doors, but has since been repaired.

The C111 served as a rolling test-bed for the German automaker during the 1960s and 70s, setting various land speed records with a number of different engine configurations. The example in question, however, is purely a display piece with no engines, leaving us to wonder where exactly the thieves thought they were going with the priceless automobile.

New Bentley Mulsanne is Only the Beginning

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

That the new Bentley Mulsanne represents a fresh start for the British luxury automaker is well known. Starting with a clean sheet of paper, the designers and engineers in Crewe completely redesigned the company's flagship saloon from the ground up. But the Mulsanne isn't where it ends, as industry sources forecast that the new sedan will also form the basis for new replacements for the Azure convertible and Brooklands coupe, both of which are based on the outgoing Arnage platform which was designed back in the late 90's when the company was still owned by Vickers Aerospace.

It remains to be seen when the replacements for the Azure and Brooklands will come along, but the new platform could also end up underpinning sister company Bugatti's upcoming model as well.

Bentley Brooklands Said To Be Bentley's Next Classic

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Ever since consumers gushed over the Bentley Brooklands limited edition coupe launched in Geneva last spring, Bentley has been preparing for early 2008, when the first of just 550 units of the vehicle will start reaching their owners.

At the focal point of the vehicle is the turbocharged 6.75Lengine, the most powerful V8 to come out of Crewe, England, Bentley's home of 60 years. The engine's 530bhp brings the heavy Arnage-based coupe up to 60 mph in just 5.0 seconds, boasting performance while offering unmatched luxury via 42 exterior paints, trimmed completely (even the headliner) with one of 25 hides and three veneers. The coupe joins the Park Ward Continental S1 and the Continental R and T in Bentley's historic line of coupe offerings.

Full release after the jump.

Bentley Brooklands

Many people have seen the coverage of Paris Hilton running her Bentley Continental GT into things and getting tickets; that poor car has been through alot lately. That's the tragedy of youth, wealth, and powerful cars. But, I think we should stand together and ban Paris from the new Bentley Coupe, Brooklands. It would be a travesty to see her ungraciously exit this fine vehicle and have paparazzi crawling on it. Hopefully, its staid styling and land yacht status would keep her away. We can hope. Autoblog was on hand in Geneva for the debut.
