Foam Bowl

A bowl that looks like a big white sponge -- everybody wants one! Designed by Marcel Wanders and made by Moooi, the idea for the Foam Bowl started as an experiment and turned into something beautiful. Created by soaking a sponge in liquid porcelain, letting it dry, and then firing it hot enough to burn the sponge away, the result is a sponge "skeleton," or a bowl that looks like it's made of foam. Pure white and porous, you'll want to be careful how much you handle it and what (if anything) you put in it. 2.25" x 8.25", $220.

Lalique Champ Elysees Bowl

What's great about this Champ Elysees Bowl by Lalique is that it can really be made to fit almost any season. It may be a bright green perfect for spring and Easter but pair with golds and it's beautiful for a fall or Thanksgiving table, and with reds and whites it's suddenly all about Christmas. I can also see it fitting into a variety of decor styles from old fashioned to modern and contemporary. Hand made in France it features hand chiseled green-tipped crystal leaves and measures 7.5"x17.5"x10". $3995

Harry Allen Banana Bowl

Wow. The minute I saw this I just knew I had to share it, if it only because it's soooooo ugly! It just goes to show that not everything expensive is classy, right? Now of course there's a small chance that I'm way off base here and that the majority of people out there think this Harry Allen Banana Bowl is a beautiful work of art, so if that's you then don't mind me! If I ever see this in someone's home I'm totally just going to respect their edgy and gutsy taste in decor!

Made of resin and plated in gold, no worries if you love it but need a different color -- 2 other options (chrome and white) are available. $120-$350

A Moon Bowl

I realize there's a close association between the two, but this Moon Bowl definitely reminds me more of swiss cheese than it does the moon. This creation is white glazed porcelain and would make a beautiful centerpiece, and I can't help but think a great fruit bowl because of the obvious air circulation. Don't load it too full, though, or you'll miss out on the play of light and shadows. And whatever you use it for it should be a regal purpose because at 195,00 € it's a pretty pricey purchase!

Designer Goldfish Bowls

A goldfish bowl is a goldfish bowl, pretty simple, right? Not to Roger Arquer, who looks at a bowl of water with a fish in it as a way to make significant statements about people and society. He has 15 different designs that cover all kinds of issues from finding privacy, playfulness, different fish living together, and even suicide. The fishbowls will be on display next month in London at the Noel Hennessey contemporary furniture showroom.

This design pictured here, Bottle Vase, speaks about how we often use objects for another purpose after the original one has ended.

Emilia Castillo Zodiac Bowl

Artist Emilia Castillo grew up in Taxco, Mexico surrounded by master silversmiths. She apprenticed at her family's Los Castillo silver workshops, where she learned the old world techniques of working with silver and other metals. She carries on the family tradition, creating beautiful works of art in the old style, while adding her own creativity and innovation. Her black porcelain Zodiac Bowl is fine example of her exacting work. Inlaid with a silver sun surrounded by stars and zodiac signs, the bowl has a graceful scalloped edge and a matte finish. $2,000.

Karim Rashid Shimmer Bowl

Silver is the most reflective of the precious metals and that's shown off to great effect with the latest design from Karim Rashid for Umbra. Instead of his often more blob-like styles this one is all angles which capture light and send it dancing. The piece is handcrafted by silversmiths and sells for $400.

The War Bowl

Hmm, I really don't know how I feel about this War Bowl. Designed by Mosley meets Wilcox. It's representative of something, but you'll have to decide what it means to you. Created by melting plastic soldiers together -- half French infantry and half British artillery from the Battle of Waterloo -- the end result is a sad but interesting looking dish that I doubt anyone would actually use to keep anything in. It kinda looks like an accident to me, like a pile of children's play soldiers ended up getting melted somehow and ruined. It also reminds me of the "Fall of the Damned" lampshade and might look interesting placed directly beneath it...

The War Bowl measures 4"x17.3" and is only available in blue for this particular soldier version, but the Mosley meets Wilcox website has other versions of War Bowls including red ninjas and black knights. $229

Simon Pearce Steel Bowl

When it comes to durability and timelessness in the kitchen very few things can compete with stainless steel, but the downside is that stainless steel dishes almost always have to sacrifice beauty for functionality. But that's not the case with this deep steel bowl by Simon Pearce. A brushed and traditional "stainless" look on the outside leads to the surprising shine and glisten of hammered steel on the inside. The combination makes for a nice mix of tough meets pretty, art meets function, you get the idea. $128.

Glass Fiber Baskets

Glass is not something you'd usually think could be made to genuinely look like fabric, but of course it can be done! These handmade glass fiber baskets take that idea and make it into a flowing folding basket, suitable for candy or fruit or whatever else you might want to keep in a bowl. Made by fusing strands of glass together into a woven pattern and then slumping them into a draped shape. Available in rainbow or violet color patterns, the small baskets measure 7" x 5" x 3" and large ones are 10" x 9" x 5.5". $90-$350.

The Node Bowl

Designed by Kevin Williams for the Brooklyn design house CAKE, the Node bowl is just as happy in your kitchen as it is being displayed as a simple sculpture. And call me practical, but it actually looks like a great place to keep fruits and vegetables, because I like a bowl stacked high and the spaces will let the pieces on the bottom breathe. But of course filling it up interferes with the "light and shadow effect" the artist was going for, so maybe just one or two pieces, like in the photo, would be better. Anyway, it's made of ceramic, and is available in white only. Measures 3.5"D x 11.75"Diam, $50.

The Golden Collection with Gold Glaze

The Golden Collection is a little too flashy to eat your cereal in or drink your OJ out of in the morning (unless maybe you're Donald Trump?), but might be nice for serving at a party. The collection includes only three pieces: the Hungry Bowl, the large Hungry Bowl, and the Big Thirsty Cup. With a pale matte finish on the outside and shiny bright gold glaze on the inside, the set is made in France and will definitely bring a feeling of warm richness and luxury to a table. Plus, you gotta love the names! Available individually, one of each will set you back a total of $242.

Alessi Big Love Ice Set
