The Gravity Powered Bookshelf

Bookends can be cute, and they come in all different shapes and sizes, but what if you never needed them again to keep your books straight and standing up in the bookshelf? The Gravity Powered Bookshelf will do just that trick, no matter if you have 10 books, 2 books, or just a lone floppy magazine on the shelf.

The name makes it sound like it's got moving parts or something, but it's really just an interesting-looking bookcase that uses gravity to its advantage. And although I do like it, I also think it looks a little homemade (like in a college dorm room kinda way).

Bear Bookends

Some people give teddy bears for Valentine's Day. But for the bibliophile these bears aren't just cute, they serve as laidback bookends. The two heavy cast metal bears recline on lounge chairs with books in their laps. A nice reminder that reading is one of the bear necessities. Okay, I deserve to be pinched for the bad bear pun but these are really adorable. They weigh nearly eight pounds each and the pair sells for $118.

Random Shelving

Words are almost not enough to express how much I like the design of this Random Shelving. The bookcase, which is made from white lacquered fiberboard, has shelves of varying widths and heights that give a display a busy, yet organized, feel. The unusual shelf layout is a more efficient use of the space than on a standard case, so you should be able to fit 50% more books on it without a problem. Each unit is only 32-inches wide (full dimensions: W32 x D10 x H85 in), but grouping the bookcases will allow you to fill a whole wall. Price: $2,250.

Wud Bookcase

Shelving units do not normally take center stage in any room. In offices, the focus is on the desk and even in libraries, the focus is on the books, not the bookcases. This compartmentalized bookcase, designed and manufactured by Wud, deserves to be at the center of attention. It looks a bit like a Tetris construction, although the way that it is sectioned makes it extremely useful for storing many things, in addition to books. The unit has a drop-down desk, two large filing cabinets and several closed cabinets. It can be made of cherry, maple or walnut and measures 94"l x 22" x 96". Price: $8,500.

Block Party Bookcase

The Block Party bookcase from Thomas Wold takes the bookcase in a whole new direction. Instead of letting the books be the art, the bookcase has moving panels that let you reframe your books and belongings, covering up what you would like to hide and exposing what you wish to show. The bookcases are a mix of woods and laminates and can also be used for electronics. Each piece is built to order at Wold's Bay Area studio. The bookcase sells for $3800.

Nurseryworks Storytime Double Bookcase

Shown here in Light Birch and Cotton Candy colors, the Nurseryworks Storytime Double Bookcase is an inventive shelving unit that turns a simple bookcase into a work of art. Nurseryworks specializes in children's furniture, if that were not evident from the color selection, but that doesn't mean that their designs have to be confined to a playroom when they're not really child specific. Anyone could use a bookcase like this one, for example, which would provide you with an interesting layout to display books, photographs and small pieces of art or sculpture. If Cotton Candy isn't striking a chord, the unit is available in a variety of colors, including white and a pale yellow, with Dark Birch framing as well as Light. Price: $1,190.

Slim Slant Coffee Table

The eco-friendly Slim Slant coffee table has a unique twist or, more accurately, an angle. The table is made from one of the most renewable resources in the world, bamboo, and the slanted angle of the shelf is meant to reduce stress on books' spines, meaning that they will last longer when stored there. Besides, it looks much neater to keep your books under the coffee table rather than on it. Price: $1050.

Invisible Book Shelf

These bookshelves are shelving and wall art in one. They seem to work by clamping onto the bottom book, securing it into place so that other books can be stacked on top of it, rendering the shelf completely invisible. If your book collection consists of a lot of paperback mystery novels, this may not be the optimal shelving because the display is much more appealing with hardback books. If your decor tends more towards minimalism, or if you already have stacks of display-worthy tomes, this unique design option may be one you want to consider. The shelf can support a weight of up to 15 pounds. Price: 18€
