The Classicist: Thoroughbreds, Bourbon and Private Planes from Flexjet
Private jet juggernaut Flexjet is offering an alluring incentive to new fractional owners via a promotion with Kentucky's Keeneland, one of the world's leading thoroughbred racing and auction facilities. The three-day Unbridled experience centers around the 2011 Breeders' Cup World Championships this fall. Known as the thoroughbred industry's most prestigious championship event, the Breeders' Cup attracts fierce competition for the richest prize-money event in the world with over $26 million in purses at stake. There's a lot more to the Unbridled experience, however, as you'd expect considering the cost for a 1/16th fraction (or 50 hours / year) on one of the company's Learjet 40XRs starts at $362,500.

Each owner and their guest will enjoy the Breeders' Cup races in the comfort of a finish-line owner's suite at the iconic Churchill Downs, one of the world's greatest racetracks and home of the Kentucky Derby, as well as an invitation to attend sun-up morning workouts. A one-on-one meeting with a renowned thoroughbred trainer and an insider's look at a famed horse farm are also in the offing. The Unbridled experience is available in limited quantities at no extra charge for Flexjet customers purchasing a new fractional share now through June 12, 2011; the all-inclusive experience takes place November 3 - 6.

Audi Wins World Snow Polo Championship in Aspen

Audi's team of aces beat out the Beluga Vodka squad from Russia to capture the World Snow Polo Championship in Aspen the other day after a fierce battle. The conditions at Aspen's Wagner Park were not ideal this year; thin snow cover prevented organizers from being able to properly pack and groom the field with heavy equipment, the Aspen Times reports. "Players spent much of the day at a standstill, trying to dig the ball out of the snow or muffing shots as the half-buried ball refused to budge, even after a hard strike," the paper notes. "Several point-blank scoring opportunities were lost as players were unable to get a clean strike." Bombardier Jets' team took third place. Meanwhile, competition is heating up for the St. Moritz Polo World Cup (above) taking place later this month in Switzerland, which will no doubt offer better conditions.

New Bombardiers Will Be World's Most Expensive Business Jets

Canadian aviation company Bombardier is aiming to displace Gulfstream as the world's most expensive business jet with the introduction of two new models. The Global 7000 and 8000, which will cost about $65 million apiece, will beat the high-speed range of the $58.5 million Gulfstream G650. Both new private jets will have a high-speed cruise of Mach 0.90; the 7000 will have a range of 7,300 nmi at Mach 0.85, while the 8000's range will top out at 7,900 nmi at Mach 0.85. Both will borrow elements from the existing Global Express XRS and 5000.

New wings, new tech and luxe amenities added to increased fuel efficiency will be the hallmarks of the new craft, aimed to appeal to ultra-wealthy customers in India, Asia and the UAE. The 7000 will have the largest cabin in business aviation while the 8,000 will boast the longest range. The 7000 will be able to fly from London to Singapore, New York to Dubai or Beijing to Washington non-stop with 10 passengers, while the 8000 can do Sydney to Los Angeles, Hong Kong to New York and Mumbai to New York non-stop with eight. Unfortunately the first one won't be ready for delivery until 2016.

Bombardier Adjusts Business Jet Forecast

Just how bad is the future for the business jet industry? One of the industry giants, Bombardier has amended its 10-year industry forecast dropping the amount of jets it says will be produced. The aircraft manufacturer now says that around 11,500 business jets will be delivered between 2009 and 2018 with revenue of around $256 billion for the industry. This represents a 15 percent drop from last year's predictions. The company believes that the eventual return of global economic growth will also result in a strong recovery in the demand for business jets. The forecast for commercial aircraft in the 20- to 149-seat range calls for 12,400 new aircraft deliveries in the 20-year period from 2009 to 2028, a slight downturn from last year's prediction.

Bombardier has announced 4,360 employees will be laid off in Canada, the United States and Northern Ireland. The AP also reports that Cessna has announced more layoffs. This means that Cessna, a major maker of small planes, has laid off 44 percent of its work force since the first job cuts in November.

Bombardier Proceeds With Learjet 85 Plans

There is some good news amidst the bad news for private jet companies. Recently, as CNN reports, Hawker Beechcraft told employees it would cut nearly 500 jobs and Cessna has also planned cuts. But Bombardier Aerospace has said that plans for its new Learjet 85 assembly line will go forward. Bombardier spokesman Leo Knaapen has said that the the company is hiring 500- 700 people to work at the Wichita plant on Learjet 85. Bombardier spokesman Leo Knaapen cites the company's more international focus as a reason for its success at a time when others are faltering. The company has said they are conscious of the financial crisis but for the moment they are not predicting any layoffs at their Wichita plant.

Business Jets See Drop In U.S. Demand

At the recent Farnborough International Air Show, usually abuzz with the latest in jet envy, market experts were instead agreeing that the U.S. demand for business jets has softened considerably. And some companies are pulling the plug on private jet travel unless the circumstances truly justify it. Supposedly due to the current economic downturn and not a response to surging fuel costs, the decrease in U.S. demand for corporate jets is in stark contrast to burgeoning sales in Russia and the Middle East, whose new moguls are shelling out between $3 and $40 million for aircraft ordered at the air show.

It's not that execs are flying commercial -- the rough equivalent of trading in your Lamborghini for a used minivan full of crying babies -- but they are chartering flights instead of buying their own wings. Business jetsetters are turning more frequently to NetJets fractional ownership or a Marquis jet card, a kind of jet use debit card. Not exactly the Greyhound of the skies just yet, a Marquis jet card starts at $126,900 for 25 hours of flight time. And you won't have the joy of pimping out your cabin like that renowned Airbus A380, whose on-board hot tub and "desert oasis" tacked on an additional $150 million to the aircraft's pricetag.

Bombardier Swiss Watches

Bombardier, the company best known for its planes, has licensed a line of Swiss chronographs through B Watches. Their line of watches is rugged and classic. The Vintage BB1&BB2 watches are automatic chronographs. The Airjet collection is comprised of quartz chronographs and there are also Deep Diver and Subdiver models. Large pictures are in the gallery. So far the handsome watches aren't too well known in the U.S. but they recently entered into an agreement with Saro Gem to sell the watches in the States, so I suspect that will change.

Bombardier Announces LearJet NXT

The latest Learjet from Bombardier Aerospace is a new midsize plane that will seat eight passengers in a stand-up cabin. The Learjet NXT has a a high-speed cruise of Mach 0.82 and a transcontinental range of up to 3,000 nautical miles. The plane is set for a public unveiling in October 2008 and so far the company has received over 65 letters of intent for this aircraft to purchase this new model.

Bombardier Spyder Roadster

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

I was driving back from a meeting this morning listening to a radio show discussing the Bombardier Spyder. One host was arguing that the new roadster trike was perfect for middle-aged men like himself who were interested in the motorcycle experience but worried about falling over. The other host argued that no man with any self-esteem what so ever would be caught dead on this thing instead of a real bike. Either way it's a distinctive vehicle, looking a bit like a regular motorcycle from the back but more like a riding lawnmower from the front. It has a 106 horsepower Rotax 990cc V-twin engine, a five-speed transmission, anti-lock brakes and a stability control system. The Can-Am Spyder roadster sells for $14,999 and comes in either yellow or silver. It will be available in the U.S. this fall.

Oprah's New Plane

We recently mentioned Oprah's home improvements. Ever wonder how she commutes to her California home when she does her show in Chicago? Private plane, of course, and she will soon have a new plane to decorate. It has been reported that she will soon receive a custom-built Global Express XRS from Bombardier Aerospace. The $47-million executive jet has seating for 10 passengers and has a leather interior with designer fixtures for the bathroom and galley. There is an aft stateroom for naps as well as a crew rest area and of course a large main cabin with every amenity Oprah could possibly require.

So Much For the Bombardier CSeries

At the Paris Airshow last year Bombardier unveiled a cabin mockup of their next generation CSeries aircraft.  The CSeries planes were to be 110-130 seat planes with broader seats and armrests for the middle passenger and larger windows at every seat. It sounded like a good plan but Bombardier announced today that "present market conditions do not justify the launch of the CSeries program at this time." Bombardier will have the former CSeries team focus on regional airlines’ future needs in the 80- to 100-seat aircraft market.
