Sensation Superyacht

The New Zealand-based Sensation Yachts has just finished up a $60 million superyacht called the "Sensation." This yacht is 50 meters long (164-ft.) with a 9.5-meter beam, four decks and room for 12 full-time crew members. The yacht will sleep at least 10 guests very comfortably, but can accommodate many more for entertaining.

The upper deck features an "enormous saloon," panoramic views, space for a fresco dining and a piano for entertainment. The main deck has a smaller saloon, formal dining room, kitchen and the huge owner's suite, which includes a private office, full bathroom and steam room and more than enough space for a king size bedroom suite. The lower deck has guest cabins, two of which can be combined to convert into a second suite, and the sun deck has a lounge, Jacuzzi, bar and a barbecue. Materials used throughout the ship include onyx, marble, handmade carpeting, opulent silks and carefully made furniture of french oak, cherry and madrona burl. Hand-stitched leather patterns and padding grace the walls.

In terms of power, the yacht has 3000 HP Caterpillar engines and a top speed of 22 knots. It will debut in late January in Auckland before sailing to Dubai for the Dubai International Boat Show.

Riva Venere 75

My Italian is rusty, but thanks to Systran, the page containing the first live shots of the Venere 75 is almost readable.  Details of the Ferretti Group yacht include a 32 knot top and 29 knot cruise, 54 ton gross weight, and a 1,453 gallon fuel tank.  The photos indicate a very open design with gorgeous sloping glass and plenty of hardwood.  (On a side note, YachtWorld.com has one listed for sale at 3.3 million Euro)

IFA Yacht Ownership Club

AME Info covers the IFA Yacht Ownership Club, which is a different concept than I have seen before. Instead of fractional yacht ownership, members pay an annual fee which gives them access to the club's services which include a fleet of luxury yachts. Different membership levels give different amounts of credits that can be used to reserve cruising days. The club currently has three Maiora yachts which are 75 to 89 feet in length in three ports, Dubai, Beirut and Cannes. The yachts can travel to a variety of places and cruise at speeds up to 28 knots. Each yacht has a captain, deckhand and steward and sleeps eight in four cabins.  The yachts can also meet you in a variety of cruising destinations.

Shadow Boats

You know you are doing okay when your boat has a boat. You know you are doing really well when your boat's boat has a boat of its own. A Shadow Boat basically a boat that follows your yacht around and holds all the toys (helicopters, cars, boats, etc.) that might otherwise take up valuable lounging space on your megayacht. The boats can be ordered in a variety of sizes and have guest cabins, crew space and can be configured with a spa, gym, salon, hospital or whatever the client desires.  The Paladin Shadow is the first shadow boat which debuted at the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show. Their next boat, the Mystere Shadow, is currently being completed, and has a game room and an observation deck.

Phuket's Marina Boom

The International Herald Tribune has a piece on the Royal Phuket Marina in Phuket, Thailand. The marina is a booming development that offers homes with their own yacht berths.  The marina covers nearly 75 acres and the first phase of the development has all but sold out. Despite the tsunami, interest in the area is still strong. The Royal Phuket Marina is just one of three marinas in the area. Boat Lagoon was the first and Yacht Haven is located on the north end of the area where a deeper channel makes for larger yachts. According to the article, the Thai government is doing their best to help growth in this sector along. Thailand used to charge imported yachts a heavy fee if they stayed in Thai waters longer than six months and laws regarding boat ownership and a requirement that any boat must have a Thai captain are under review. Other developments with a marine focus are also planned for the Phuket area including the Paradise Bay Marina Resort at Cape Yamu which will have mooring for 500 yachts.  There is some concern that all this building could lead to an oversupply of berths in the area in a few years but if the yacht business in that part of the world continues its rapid growth it shouldn't be a problem.

Westport Shipyard Set To Launch 164-Foot Yacht

Last August, we mentioned that Westport Shipyard in Washington was working on a new 164-foot yacht. The yacht, now named Vango, is set to be unveiled next week. The $30 million has a beam of more than 30 feet. The yacht accommodates owners and up to ten guests. The top-deck VIP suite has its own sun deck and the master suite on the main deck spans the full beam. There is a large covered deck aft for outdoor gatherings. The flybridge includes a hot tub and full-service bar and a hard roof folds back to accommodate a helicopter. The owner hasn't been named but the shipyard has squashed a rumor that this is Oprah's new boat.
