Lagerfeld's Library & More from The Selby

Fashion and interiors photographer and illustrator Todd Selby is the latest blogosphere star to bring out a book of his work. The cult favorite auteur of The Selby features the eclectic homes and favorite spaces of Karl Lagerfeld, Christian Louboutin, Simon Doonan, Erin Wasson, Helena Christensen and more in The Selby Is In Your Place (Abrams, $35). Lagerfeld's massive library in Paris is particularly astonishing. The book consists of over thirty profiles, most of which have never been seen before, accompanied by Selby's watercolor portraits of the subjects and objects from their homes, and illustrated questionnaires along with the photographs. Cities represented include New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Tokyo, Sydney, and London. Like the site that spawned it, the book is an alluring "insider's view of creative individuals in their personal spaces with an artist's eye for detail."

The Sartorialist: The Book

Scott Schuman, who worked in the fashion industry for 15 years before starting his now famous blog, The Sartorialist, and landing a column in GQ, has come out with a book of his stunning street portraits that's a must for any student of modern style.

The Sartorialist the book is a 500-page collection of Schuman's favorite photographs from around the world - "from the quiet dignity of a man with silk handkerchief carefully popping out of his jacket pocket, to the pride of a young woman who fashioned her father's shirt into a skirt, from the lightness of a diaphanous dress to the unexpected flash of neon under muted tones."

The Sartorialist captures the "inspirational aspect of people styling themselves in ingenious, playful, creative, unpredictable and distinctive ways," be they models, regular joes, fashion editors, or in a couple instances, children. Schuman sees inspiration in everything, be it gorgeous, garish, or just plain weird, as long as it's done with flair.

There are two versions of the book being published later this month: a $25 paperback (above) and a $175 "bespoke" limited edition hardcover. The Sartorialist was picked by Time magazine as one of the Top 100 design influencers, and has been lauded by the New York Times as "the bellwether American site that turned photoblogging into an art form."

What Is James Wearing?

Who is James? And why should we care about about his clothes? Because James Andrew, a New York-based interior designer, is hip, effortlessly cool (or so it appears), sports python loafers sans socks, can carry off a mint green suit, and wears Gucci like there's no tomorrow. For proof, and to see what other designers he has in his closet, check out Andrew's aptly named blog, What Is James Wearing?.

It's a vicarious read, and even better are the photos. Andrew models his outfit at whatever fabulous locale he's frequenting (he must rely on the kindness of strangers to take his photo) and then describes what's going on in the photo, followed by a breakdown of his outfit. It seems Andrew does quite well as a designer, because unless he has a personal shopper to do the legwork, he has a whole lot of time, and no doubt funds, to spend on his attire.

Andrew has two handsome whippets, Rupert and Nigel, whom he loves and shows off now and then on the site. I bet come winter, when it's time for their coats, they are the best-dressed dogs in NYC.

Domino Magazine's "The Deal Hunter"

Domino magazine, "the guide to living with style," has a fun column called "The Deal Hunter," penned by young Columbia alum Nick Olsen, that features a plethora of style for (mostly) low prices. I know here at Luxist we're often about the high-end, big ticket items, but I think it's OK to watch the finances now and then in order to keep affording the big stuff. Olsen writes in that chatty, bloggy style (which I haven't mastered, alas) and regularly finds things from all ends of the home decor spectrum. Just to show he's not all about the cheap stuff, he recently featured a $950 table from Mecox. Check out his blog if you're looking for a deal but still want lots of style or something colorful for your home.

Autoblog Drives The GTC

So this is getting close to being old news ("old" here is used only relatively because of the pace the blogging world moves at), but our good buddies over at AutoBlog got to drive one of the first Bentley Continental GTCs to arrive in America. As if we weren't jealous enough when they drove the Flying Spur. The post is very well written and the last line sums up the car perfectly. I won't ruin the surprise, just go read it. Plenty of photos too.

A Zip Code is Not Enough for Luxury

When it comes to real estate, many people will tell you that it all boils down to: location, location, location. This may or may not be true, but more people than you can shake a stick at (or shake a mortgage at) believe in it wholeheartedly. A nice house can do a lot for a property, but it seems that people are paying a premium for the property alone now. And I'm not referring to a vacant lot, priced expensively but accordingly. I'm talking about lots with run-down, unimproved houses so small you might actually be at risk of inhaling them when you hear the price - assuming they don't collapse first.
