Fortunoff Launches New Jewelry Website

fortunoff jewelryJust in time for the holidays, Fortunoff is back. The The outdoor furniture and jewelry store brand filed Chapter 11 and was liquidated last year. But now Fortunoff is back selling fine jewelry through a new online destination, FortunoffJewelry.com.

Fortunoff was founded by 1922 by Max and Clara Fortunoff in Brooklyn, New York and became a popular retailer of jewelry and home furnishings, outdoor furniture, bed and bath, tabletop and gifts. The brand was owned and operated by the Fortunoff and Mayrock families for four generations. In 2005, members of the two families sold a majority stake in the business to two private equity firms, selling off the remainder of their equity in Fortunoff a couple years later. By February 2008, Fortunoff had filed Chapter 11. Another private equity firm, NRDC, purchased it and planned to put Fortunoff shops in Lord and Taylor department stores. Those plans fizzled and Fortunoff went out of business in 2009. Now back in the hands of the founding Fortunoff family, Fortunoff Fine Jewelry has created the new e-commerce site with future plans for eventual brick-and-mortar destinations. The shop features designs by Natasha Wozniak, Judith Jack, Misha of N.Y. and the Black & White Vintage Collection. The piece shown at right features black diamonds set in white gold on an agate base and sells for $1,795.

The company also has reopened the Fortunoff Backyard Store, which sells outdoor furniture and seasonal decorations at locations in New Jersey and New York.

Lauren Conrad's Black Diamond Ring

Those glued to The Hills finale last night might have noticed Lauren Conrad's great style. The reality star turned clothing designer and author wore a gold-accented long sleeve minidress by Mandalay accented with an interesting piece of bling, a black diamond circle ring by Cheryl Lynn Greenspoon.

Greenspoon launched Cheryl Lynn Jewelry LLC in 2007. She received her Bachelors degree in Television Production from Boston University but later decided that jewelry was the right path for her and headed to the Gemological Institute of America. Her pieces feature both black and white diamonds along with other precious stones and she uses openwork designs that create drama without adding bulk. The ring shown on Lauren Conrad is the Cheryl Greenspoon 18k gold black diamond circle ring which sells for $1560.

Black Diamond Serpent Cufflinks by Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie for Asprey

brad pitt and angelina jolie for asprey
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have designed an $11,000 pair of black diamond, emerald and white gold serpent cufflinks for famed London luxury goods house Asprey to benefit a children's charity. The luxe accessories are the first item for men in the Protector Collection, the line of limited edition fine jewels and silver objects created by the couple in collaboration with Asprey which my colleague Deirdre Woollard reported on last fall. The design of the Protector black diamond serpent links with 18k white gold bases and emerald eyes is based on Jolie's reflection on the serpent as an iconic guardian and cultural symbol of family protection, inspired by a ring she was given while pregnant with the couple's first child Shiloh in 2006. Each piece in Protector Collection is a limited edition, handcrafted at Asprey's London flagship store in New Bond Street. The black diamond serpent cufflinks match rings, earrings and a pendant in the women's collection. All proceeds from the Protector Collection pieces are being donated to the Education Partnership For Children of Conflict (EPCC). Co-founded by Jolie, the organization raises awareness and funds to educate child victims of war, conflict and natural disasters.

The Blackout Collection from Rafaello & Co.

Let's face it, outrageous bling can be a bit frowned upon these days. Perhaps that's why some rappers and other celebrities are turning to black diamonds. Black diamonds have a more subtle appeal, a look that is still flashy but not quite so attention seeking.

Rafaello & Company Jewelers is the work of five families who first journeyed to the United States from Uzbekistan back in the mid 1980s. The family worked in the jewelry wholesale business for years but Rafael Aranbayev, Avi Aranbayev and Gabriel "The Jeweler" Jacobs started their high end jewelry line, Rafaello & Company Jewelers, in 2009. The brand has made red carpet pieces and customized jewelry for a variety of stars including Jamie Foxx, Alicia Keys, Ne-Yo and many athletes. This summer they premiered their latest jewelry collection called "The Blackout" which features black diamonds. There are pieces for both men and women. The brand is committed to using conflict-free stones and 10 percent of their proceeds go to All As One a nonprofit in Sierra Leone that helps orphans.

Hublot Big Bang One Million $ Black Caviar Bang Wins Award For Best Jewelry Watch

This year a piece unique from Hublot won the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Geneve prize for jewelery watch of the year, 2009. The watch is as ostentatious as it is pretentious. I actually like the look of the watch a lot, and even though inside of me I would like to wear the timepiece, it is hard to swallow the blatant excess built into the timepiece. The inflated price point is even built into the name of the watch. For me, a name like "Million $ Black Caviar Bang" sounds about as classy as "One Thousand Dollar Bubbly Champagne." Don't forget, "more bubbly, more buck!" Don't any of you go stealing my business ideas now...

Hublot made the million dollar big bang watch out of white gold and rare baguette cut black diamonds. almost 550 diamonds are all over the watch, with a total of 34.5 carats. Hublot took its time making the watch. Over 2000 hours went into it. The movement is a manually wound tourbillon. Functions include the time (tourbillon acts as the seconds indicator), and a power reserve indicator.

Why did it win best jewelry watch in Geneva? I am not sure. Perhaps because it is rare, took a lot of time to make, is for men, and is actually quite attractive. Is nice jewelry is supposed to inspire envy, awe, and a bit of anger? If so, then the Hublot Million $ Caviar Bang was a good choice to win.

Azature Ring

When I was a kid and I used to help my stepfather on home improvement projects I often ended up trying on copper tubing and six-sixded nuts on as rings. Azature, a young and brooding jewelry designer, has taken that six-sided design and turned it into a fabulous piece of jewelry. The Hollywood-based designer has an abiding love for black, using black diamonds and a sterling-platinum alloy to craft high-end bangles, necklaces and rings for both men and women. Many of his designs have an industrial rough-edged look without being hopelessly gimmicky. They are powerful.

The piece shown above features five carats of Russian black diamonds and sells for $12,900.

Daniel K Pret-A-Porter Collection

Fashion designers have their haute couture lines and their ready-to-wear collections. High-end diamond jeweler, Daniel K, has a dazzling diamond and platinum couture jewelry collection but now there is Daniel K Prêt-à-Porter, the luxury jeweler's first entrée into the gold arena, the jeweler's version of ready to wear. Since 1999, Daniel Koren, the young jeweler behind Daniel K has been creating jewelry with diamonds and platinum and his pieces have been worn by celebrities including Debra Messing, Mary J Blige, Sigourney Weaver and Halle Berry.

The Daniel K Prêt-à-Porter line is a a recently unveiled, collection of modern earrings, bracelets, rings, and necklaces featuring pavé diamonds set in 18k rose, yellow or white gold. The collection offers a variety of pavé diamond encrusted, round and oval hoops in different widths and sizes. I also love the colorful stacking bangles which are available in different colors featuring rubies, sapphires, tsavorites and diamonds and can be worn together or individually. The bangles are hinged and have a release button for getting them on and off easily.

The most dramatic pieces are the ones that feature black and white diamonds. The bracelet above is part of a set that has black and white diamonds set into rhodium blackened white gold for a distinctive and slightly gothic look. The Prêt-à-Porter collection is more moderately priced than the Daniel K Couture collection, retail prices range from $2,500 - $60,000.
