The Campaign for Mayo Clinic, Charity of the Day

Filed under: Charity of the Day

The Campaign for Mayo Clinic is nearing the end of its five year mission to raise over a billion dollars for continued patient care, research and education. The largest non-profit practice group in the world, the Mayo Clinic is preparing for extensive Medicare cuts and other reductions in government reimbursement for medical care. The campaign began in 2005 with a significant leadership gift of $25 million from the CEO of Marriott International, Bill Marriott, whose daughter was cared for at the Mayo Clinic in the 1960s.

The campaign recently surpassed the $1 billion mark but has a bit further to go to reach its ultimate goal of $1.25 billion by the end of 2009. Most gifts have come from former patients, but the Clinic's development staff hopes that its call to the general public in May will help the Campaign meet its goal on time.

Schrager's Marriott Hotel Gets a Name

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

Around six months ago, lifestyle entrepreneur Ian Schrager and hotel magnate Bill Marriott announced that they would be collaborating on a hotel brand. Now we've got a few more details. Following the popular trend of one-word rather bland names for chains, here comes "Edition." The pair plans to eventually have more than 100 Edition hotels in markets around the globe. The first nine hotels are slated for Paris, Madrid, Costa Rica, Miami, Washington, Chicago and Scottsdale, Ariz. and two in Los Angeles. The hotels will all have 150 to 200 rooms and each will have an individual style. Th partners have also promised to be environmentally responsible. Schrager will be the mastermind behind the concept, design, marketing, branding and food and beverages while Marriott will do the grunt work of development and operations.

Schrager and Marriott Plan Hotel Empire

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

Boutique hotel god Ian Schrager, who most recently worked his magic on the absolutely delicious Gramercy Park Hotel has a big new partner, Marriott Hotels. The partnership will give Schrager the opportunity to bring his particular brand of chic to around 100 hotels located in cities throughout North and South America, Europe and Asia. The hotels will contain an average of 150 to 200 rooms. Schrager will do the concept, design, branding and food and beverage while Marriott will oversee the development process and operate the hotels. No specific details have been given on the project but there are some clues. Check out a Businessweek article from last year in which Schrager proclaimed that "it is over for design hotels" proclaiming the art hotel to be the new hotness. Also Hotel Chatter was kind enough to liveblog the dynamic duo's appearance on Morning Call.
