The Standard Hotels and Quiksilver Collaborate on Special Edition Surf Gear

Filed under: Apparel, Luxury Travel & Hotels

Last summer Quiksilver and The Standard hotels paired up to create The Standard Boardshort by Quiksilver to celebrate "the bold attitudes and bright colors of the boardshort's golden era." At the same time Quiksilver announced it would be selling its bikinis in the bikini/boardshort vending machines at The Standard hotel. It's a new summer, and so here the two are again with a new announcement: 2010 sees four more custom boardshort creations, a new reversible bikini and a set of Standard Sunglasses by Quiksilver.

This year the designs weren't only a celebration of the past but of the present: the various colors and patterns are also connected to the aesthetics of The Standard's various locations. There will be 250 pieces of each, with The Standard Boardshorts by Quiksilver running $75, The Standard Bikini by Quiksilver going for $88, and the Standard Sunglasses by Quiksilver retailing for $75. They'll be available in those vending machines and at The Standard online store.

Sirène Collection Brings Swimwear Boutique Online

With summer finally upon us, Sirène brings the swimwear boutique into the 21st-century with its online collection.

Created by Nell Love, a willowy blond with a plethora of seaside lounging experience herself, Sirène presents a curated swimwear inventory from up-and-coming as well as coveted designers, such as Camilla & Marc, Salt Swimwear and Ondademar. The result is a diverse collection, both in terms of designs and materials, that should satisfy any woman who balks at the annual ritual of finding a new suit. From Mara Hoffman's bold, Rio-ready bikinis to Lisa Marie Fernandez's neoprene 80s homages, Sirène offers a look for your bathing ambitions, whatever they may be. There's also a line of handmade, Moroccan beach bags and kaftans by Camilla, true statement pieces with their psychedelic prints.

Nell, who had previously revamped Steven Alan's e-commerce presence, adds a welcome bit of her own personality to the site with a certain element of tough sizing love. Each piece comes with a custom blurb on its fit, which could include a warning about side coverage, a notice of low-slung bottoms or a heads-up to order a size down. Essential information when ordering online.

And for those last-minute island jaunts, Sirène will deliver straight to your destination, so your swimwear is there before you are.

1 Sol Swimwear

1 sol swimwearSwimsuit season is here and I'm excited. Even if I'm not ready to actually wear a swimsuit, I can't help but to window shop and use that as incentive to get healthy and back into shape. My husband would say I look great, bless his heart, but my self critical side says otherwise.

My first stop is 1 Sol Swimwear. They have bikini sets, one pieces - which are actually monokinis, and cover ups so you can look ever so fashionable as you lounge by the pool or on the beach. Their cherry Red Laser Cut Fold Over Bikini ($137) immediately caught my attention. The color red is so vibrant and would look great against all skin tones. It features tear drop shaped laser cuts with metallic accents which are a fun and flirty touch. I especially like the removable padding for those who want a bit of lift and shape. All of their swimsuits are made with a nylon spandex blend giving you a firm fit all around. See below for more styles.

Sex on the Beach: Crystal Jin Swimwear

If you're lucky enough to be planning a trip to the beach in this dismal stretch of weather it's well worth checking out Brooklyn-based designer Crystal Jin Eley's recently launched line of luxurious, sexy swimwear. The minimal and chic Crystal Jin collection includes bikinis like this itsy bitsy number, bandeau tops with matching bottoms, and monokinis including a plunging v-neck held snugly to the body with a thin center strap, all finished in a handful of tasteful prints and a subdued, well-edited palette. Of course you need to be in pretty great shape to pull these off but it's well worth it. Looks feature precise hand finishing and hardware from Barcelona as well as special pieces created exclusively for the brand by metal artisans based Los Angeles. The fit and cut of each piece is painstakingly fashioned to ensure that each suit wears like a second skin and structural elements have been incorporated to showcase the elegance of the collection. Eley is a former accessories designer for J.Crew who also worked for Proenza Schouler, Catherine Malandrino and Lela Rose before starting her own label.

Brette Sandler Resort 2010All the holiday madness and rushing around may have you thinking ahead to your next vacation. If you're looking to spoil yourself (or a fabulous gal you know) with a holiday gift that goes well with a plane ticket to somewhere sunny, Brette Sandler's swimwear collection may be just what you need.

In the gallery below, you can preview the collection, which is rolling out piece by piece on Shopbop.com with prices in the $100 to $300 range.

If you haven't heard of Brette Sandler, she's a young designer with a bright future. When she graduated from Parsons School of Design, her senior thesis was a swimwear collection which immediately grabbed the attention of Barneys and Searle, and she went on to a two-year internship at Michael Kors. Her first collection was released in 2005, and now her suits are sold in Bloomingdale's, Intermix, specialty boutiques across America and of course Barneys.

We aren't sure we always agree with her choice of pattens, but we love the innovative, artistic, sexy shapes, and can't wait to see more from Brette Sandler!

Glamour Back in Fashion at Miami Swimsuit Shows

At Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Miami designers just showed the latest looks in swimwear for Spring 2010. "Old glamour is back in a big way" declared the Miami Herald of the numerous collections on display at the chic Raleigh Hotel in South Beach. Check out the video above for some highlights - you'll enjoy it even if you can't wear any of the suits yourself. Other trends of note to emerge from the round of eye-popping events, according to the Herald: hot pink is in, ditto transparent material; as for shape it was "all about the bandeau and the monokini (attached bikini) or cutout one-pieces," while high-waisted and ruffled looks made a splash as well. Many of the suits were "sexy in a feminine way - not overtly flashing a lot of skin." Oh well.

Pistol Panties 'Anita' Bikini

Made for strolling the beach, certainly not for beach volleyball, the 'Anita' bikini studded with 5,000 vibrant Swarovski crystals is this season's summer bling. Offered exclusively at Selfridges & Co in London this limited edition swimwear gem from Pistol Panties costs about $3,000 (£2,000). Its maillot silhouette ties behind the neck and narrowly connects in the middle by a beaded gold rope. This colorful, sexy number will certainly make a sensational statement at any coastal getaway. Just think twice about jumping into the ocean.

Missoni Bikini

I needed an excuse to buy this $455 Missoni bikini so I came up with two : You never know when an inpromptu weekend getaway will have you wishing you had a hot new bikini....plus summer is just around the corner! I was browsing Ron Herman and came across this gem. Missoni bikinis are tailored to fit a womans body in the most flattering way possible. They feel expensive and look exotic, like you are already on vacation, in Bora Bora. This suit has adjustable side tie bottoms, an adjutable halter tie neck top, and a single clasp closure at the back of the top. I have a similarly cut top from Missoni and it withstood a day at the waterslides without any horrifying moments, the closure is very secure! Like all things Missoni this suit was made in Italy. It's fully lined and made of 80% Nylon and 20% Elastane. The best part is that Missoni prints never go out of style!

A $108,000 Golden Bra

Generally speaking, spending more on a bra means getting more in the way of comfort, support, and all that other good stuff -- but not in this case. This is a bra made of solid gold and diamonds, and although I'm sure it gets good scores in the support department (ouch) I'm thinking comfort and versatility probably not so much. It's priced at $108,600, but only $58,600 of that is for gold and diamonds -- all that intricate design and diamond handiwork racked up a $50,000 labor bill. Was it really worth the effort?

It is pretty, but I think I'd rather have a bra made of diamonds than gold. Maybe whoever ended up with that gold swimsuit should buy it!

Tara Matthews Frog Bikini

Summer carries on and, as we finally come to the height of the season, it might be time for a new bathing suit. If bold colors and prints don't suit you, you don't have to settle for something boring, or plain. The Frog Bikini by Tara Matthews is dressed up with lovely frogs, embroidered on both the top and bottom of the two-piece olive swimsuit. The frog is done in gold thread, with tiny jeweled eyes; it has a high level of interest and detail, but does not attract unnecessary attention to the suit itself in the way a gaudy pattern would. Besides, the frog is adorable and there is hardly a better animal to portray on a swimsuit than an amphibian. Price: $385.

Build-Your-Own Bikini

We've known for some time that you can create your own polo shirts, ties and hats at Ralph Lauren's website. By selecting the color combinations for the main piece and the accenting polo pony, you can end up with someting unique that flatters your coloring and suits your style. This summer, the designer has added to the idea with create-your-own bikini and sarong options for women. The basic bikini is made out of stretch mesh pique, Polo's signature suit material. It has a low-cut halter top and a low-rise bikini-style bottom that pair to creat a sexy silhouette. The top and bottom pieces can be the same or different colors and are $42 each. The sarong is short, with a side tie, and is $50. The only feature that would improve the process is if you could upload your own photo to the website and see how it looks on before you buy it.
