Equinox, Derringer and the $2300 Bicycle

Equinox fitness clubs has launched an exclusive partnership with the Derringer bike brand to create the Equinox Limited Edition Derringer cycle, Derringer's first peddle bike. Until now, Derringer has created only one type of bike, gas hybrid bikes which have been a hit with celebs; this is the first non-gas style. The bike has a custom color combination for Equinox and a one size fits all 18" frame (they say it fits riders 5' – 6'4"). It has both a single speed and fixed gear option, simply by switching the configuration of the back wheel. It comes partially preassembled and weighs 26 pounds. The bike will be sold at The Shop for $2300.

Every week in October, Equinox will give away one bike to people who have met with an Equinox membership advisor in October. Equinox members are automatically entered to win. The weekly drawing will occur on the following days: October 12, 19, 26 and Sunday, October 31.

Factor 001 Bicycle by BERU F1 Systems

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

$34,000 will buy you a whole lot of things, some pretty nice cars among them. Or you could spend it all on a bicycle. Yes, a bicycle. But not just any bicycle: the Factor 001 from BERU F1 Systems.

The state-of-the-art bike is designed and crafted by Formula One engineers, and doesn't conform to the regulations of any specific bicycle racing association. As such, the engineers at BERU were able to start from a clean slate. The result is a carbon-fiber monocoque frame – just like that of an F1 car – with carbon-ceramic brakes and an electronic monitoring system. Each example takes a team of six engineers a week to complete, and only a few hundred will be built in all, each crafted to the buyer's specifications and measurements, and engraved with his or her name on the handlebars.

The Factor 001 is available from Harrod's, in case the price wasn't an indication of its exclusivity, and is currently on display at the London Museum of Science, in case its technology wasn't.

Fairmont Monte Carlo: The Only Way to Watch the Tour de France

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Sports

There are two ways to take in the Tour de France. One is to cram yourself into a spot along some godforsaken stretch of road with all the other riffraff. You can hope to get a look at the action ... as long as they person in front of you isn't tall. Or, you can find your way to Monaco's F1 circuit, where the race departs. Instead of schlepping out to the site, you can stay nearby. Without the hassle of getting to and from, you might actually enjoy the experience!

To help you enjoy the kickoff of the 96th Tour, the Fairmont Monte Carlo has put together a great package. Stay from July 1 to July 5, and you can pick up a room for €529 (around $735) a night, with a buffet breakfast included.

So, if you've ever wanted to witness the greatest cycling spectacle of all time, here's your chance to do it the right way. Once the riders depart, drop some cash on the roulette table, and sip a wine carefully crafted in Provence. Do everything that those dedicated athletes can't. The lucky racers won't be back until next year, but you can take a few more days to play with the wealthy.

Bakfiets: Dutch Cargo Cycles Transport Kids in Style

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Luxury Cars & Autos, Green

bicyclesI'm in Amsterdam, arguably the bicycle capital of the world, where an afternoon walk yesterday yielded the unavoidable observation: the thing for stylish parents to have is a cargo bike made by Bakfiets.

These bikes (which, confusingly, are also called bakfiets in Dutch) are specially-made with a wood cargo box designed to accommodate children, groceries, and all the other necessities of a parental commute or errand-run. The cargo box has a seat for kids, and some even have seat belts.

The Bakfiet brand cargo bikes, with handcrafted wood boxes, are handsome design objects in their own right, and cost between €2,000 and 3,000. I've also spotted cargo bikes by Babboe that look lovely as well.

If you're visiting Amsterdam, you can rent the bikes at various locations. In the US, Dutch Bike Company in Seattle imports.

$30,000 Customized KGS Bikes

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Green

With the environment to think about, and our wallets also due to ever-growing transportation costs, investing in a well-made custom bicycle is sounding a lot more appealing to many people than it did just a few years ago. Now whether you can justify forking over as much for a bike as you would for a car is another story, but for some having a customized two-wheeled ride is worth it. KGS Bikes has a special fitting process that makes their bikes customized to fit each individual buyer, and meet their unique needs. The prices range from $8,000 - $32,000, with the highest price point buying you a "one-off work of rolling art."
