Dr. Phil Buys $30 Million Home That Re-Creates the Alamo

Filed under: Decor, Estates, Celebrity Shopping

Dr. Phil McGraw and his wife, Robin, have purchased a close to $30 million home in Beverly Hills that re-creates the Alamo. The home, on nearly three acres, features a formal dining room, huge entryway, library/media room, and a great room that combines the living room and kitchen. It totals 15,000 square feet and has five bedrooms, nine full baths, and two half-baths, and there's a giant fountain out front (of course). There's also a guest house above the garage with another bedroom and a full bath, as well as a pool and lighted tennis court. McGraw and his wife not long ago listed their current home for $16.5 million. The listing was with Jana Jones Duffy.

Stewart Antiques, Vintage Finds In Beverly Hills

As I discovered recently at the Los Angeles Antiques Show, Los Angeles has a thriving antiques culture hidden deep under an exterior that appears to only embrace the new and trendy. Right off paparazzi-infested Robertson Street in Beverly Hills you'll find Stewart Antiques, a third-generation, family-owned luxury-goods business that got its start in London in 1916. The store sells an eclectic variety of art, jewelry, and furniture spanning the ages from a Chaudet bronze to a Andy Warhol signed screenprint of Dracula. The owner, Andrew Morris, was born in London, England and spent his summers and holidays working for the family business. In 1992 he moved the gallery from foggy London to sunny L.A.

In addition to housing a cornucopia of rarities Stewart Antiques offers appraisal services for charity, probate, insurance, equal distribution or other purposes whether you need a full estate or just a single precious item evaluated. They also offer design services and buy a variety of items including 18th, 19th and 20th Century American & European Art, Antique and Estate Jewelry, Sterling Silver, Fine Furniture and Collectibles. Some of Stewart's treasures after the jump.

Five Cigar Recommendations for Father's Day

I'm about to celebrate my first Father's Day, so when I heard that the Beverly Hills Cigar Club had a few cigar suggestions for the occasion, I opened the e-mail immediately. In past years, I would have written the blog post for everyone else ... this year, I have something at stake!

Vin Lee, CEO of the Beverly Hills Cigar Club, has put together an interesting menu of cigars for Father's Day this year. From this list, I'd go with the Oliva Serie V, though my personal favorite these days is the 601 Trabuco (hint, hint).

Let's take a look at the five cigars Lee offers up as Father's Day suggestions:

1. CAO America Monument Pinstripe Torpedo
The wrapper on this cigar consists of two leaves arranged to deliver a pinstriping effect. One is a golden brown Connecticut Shade, and the other is a chocolate brown Connecticut Broadleaf. The filler comes from Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic and the United States. Notes Lee, "Warm summer nights this Father's Day, heat up the Kalamazoo 900 Grill and let Dad light up America while he slow grills his special burgers. No, he still won't tell you what's in the sauce though."

Vertu Opens Rodeo Drive Boutique

vertu cell phoneYou might be tempted to think that the days of the diamond-covered cellphone are over but that doesn't seem to be the case. Vertu recently opened its Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills boutique showcasing among other baubles, a $70,000 cellphone made with an 83-carat sapphire, platinum, black leather and rubies. The LA Times reported that at the grand opening there were more than a few enthusiasts in attendance including music producer Quincy Jones and singer Seal.

Everything about the Vertu is luxurious, from the handcrafted jeweled exterior to the ring tones created by famous composers and bands specifically for the phone and the concierge service available at your fingertips. Vertu has been around since 1998, created by Frank Nuovo, who was Nokia's lead designer. Around 250,000 of the phones have been sold. Not iPhone numbers but still impressive for phones that cost five figures.

Ed Niles-Designed Home, Beverly Hills, Estate of the Day

In the world of trophy estates, few properties can trump a glass circular home. One of Beverly Hills' most unique properties -- arguably one of the most unique properties anywhere -- has come on the market at $10.9 million. It's an Ed Niles original; need we say more?

Niles designs art work that people just happen to live in. He favors using a lot glass and we suspect that he's on every window-washer's holiday card list. He's built several homes in Malibu, as well as the Malibu Jewish Center and Synagogue. And they all, this one included, seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor living spaces in a contemporary modernist way.

The 7,500-square-foot two-story Beverly Hills home is centered around a circular inner-courtyard and has six bedrooms and seven bathrooms, with jetliner views from all rooms. The home has an infinity-edge pool and gardens. The gourmet kitchen, with a full-length counter with seating for about 10, is connected to the dining room by a circular glass hallway that wraps around the courtyard. Sunlight, sunlight and more sunlight fill the rooms.

The home includes a high-tech media room, a six-car garage and a personal study. The second-floor master suite continues the modernistic clean lines of the rest of the home and all the flooring is limestone. Niles frequently custom-designs furniture for the homes he builds.

Summitridge Drive, Estate of the Day

Dated or divine? Today's Beverly Hills home, the former residence of the late Janet Leigh and Robert Brandt is the kind of 1970s home that is either in need of a teardown or in need of loving preservation depending on your mindset (certainly the Real Estalker's commenters are of two minds about it). The four-bedroom home was built in 1976 and has brick fireplaces, wood-covered walls and vaulted ceilings. The tones are predominately neutral here and give the home a calm energy. The kitchen could use a major refresh but there's a lot to love here in the simple, angular lines. One nice detail is the bridge over the main living area that connects the upstairs bedroom wings. The gated property includes a tennis court, pool and two-car garage. The couple purchased this home in the Beverly Hills Post Office in 1976 for $357,500. It is listed at $3.395 million.

Beverly Grove, Estate of the Day

Israeli-born architect-builder Yechiel "Eli" Yogev, who built the CalTrans building in downtown Los Angeles, constructed this beauty. Yogev, the owner and co-founder of Maya Steel Fabrications, has listed the 9,000-square-foot home in Beverly Hills at $12.1 million. Hard-pressed to define its style? I'd go with Trophy Modern and let the boys at the AIA come after me.

However you define the style, it's a definite one-of-a-kind home, a megalith tour de force with seemingly larger-than-life expansive spaces. The liberal use of steel caissons and cement contribute to the fortress. The home has a rooftop pool and deck, an elevator, a glass-floored 500-bottle wine cellar, towering ceilings and massive 20-foot glass walls.

There are illuminated waterways, imported Jerusalem stone, sand stone, mahogany walls and basaltic stone flooring. There is a 40-foot interior waterfall in the atrium and a stainless steel and mahogany tread sculpted staircase spans the three stories. Steel-encased bridges connect the main house with the 4,700 square foot roof top deck and pool. The home has four bedrooms and six bathrooms, including those in the guesthouse. The kitchen comes equipped with three Caesarstone islands with built-in Viking, Bofi, and Gaggenau appliances and stainless steel cabinetry. The home is equipped with a screening room and a top-of-the-line Crestron electronics system. The master suite includes custom glass doors, mirrored TV, private deck and a spa-like bathroom with steam room and walk-in closet.

Ben Bacal of Homeology LA, Keller-Williams Hollywood Hills, and Aaron Kirman of Hilton & Hyland, Beverly Hills, share the listing.

One More Time For Britney Spears To Sell Her Beverly Hills Home

britney spearsWell, well, well look what's back on the market. We've been following the story of Britney Spears' house in the Summit community of Beverly Hills since she spend $6.75 million in January 2007 (during the Britney's gone plum loco period). Since that ill-fated purchase she has struggled on and off to unload the five-bedroom home. It was once listed as high as $7.9 million but the last time it was listed in June 2009 it was at a far more realistic $6.499 million.

The Real Estalker reveals that while the home was removed from the market in September of 2009 it is now back again with a more than one million dollar price chop. It has shown up with a price of $5.495 million and has listing pictures that show that most of the furniture has been removed. It is listed with Nancy Sanborn of Prudential California real estate, a real estate agent that specializes in probate and trust sales. Should the home sell at its asking price, she'd be out well over a million dollars once you factor in taxes, real estate fees and other expenses. The home was built in 2001 and has over 7400 square feet, of space including a double-height living room, office, media room and attached maid's quarters. It sold in 2002 for $2.65 million.

Sherry Stringfield In Beverly Hills, Estate of the Day

Cute is probably a word that actress Sherry Stringfield, famous for playing a doctor on "ER" and appearing tonight in Lifetime movie "Who Is Clark Rockefeller?" has heard a lot in her life. The word also applies to her six-bedroom Beverly Hills home which recently hit the market. Record from Property Shark show that Stringfield bought the home in 2003 for $1.935 million. The Spanish-style home was built in 1928 and has been redone while keeping much of its original charm. It has a large family room, highly polished hardwood floors and formal living and dining rooms. There is also a library/study and one of the six bedrooms is used as a sitting room for the master suite.

The cute is everywhere. In the floral wall opposite the piano. In the curlicue fireplace grate in front of the white brick fireplace. In the striped chairs in the dining room. In the blackboard-painted study. In the master bath set into the house's central tower. It's a grown-up cute, but cute nonetheless.

The home is located within walking distance to Beverly Hills shopping and schools and has a small backyard sitting area but no pool. It is listed at $2.895 million.

Beverly Hills Cigar Club to Hockey Haters: Light(en) Up!

Much ado has been made of the cigars ignited by the Canadian Women's Hockey Team in celebration of the gold medal they had earned. Of course, they are not the first to light cigars following a victory, and despite much of the criticism being levied these days, they are unlikely to be the last. Vin Lee, CEO of the Beverly Hills Cigar Club, wants the team to know that they have his support.

In addition to decrying the International Olympic Committee's suggestion that an investigation may be necessary, he said in a statement:

Every other sport – from the Stanley Cup, the World Cup of Soccer, NASCAR to the Super Bowl -- supports celebrating victories with a bottle of champagne and a great cigar," points out Lee. "The moment is emotional; in the case of the Olympics, it often is the reward of years of hard work and sacrifice. The Canadian Women's Hockey Team should not be chastised for wanting to mark their victory on the ice. They are national heroes.

It would be nice for the IOC to lighten up on this issue ... having already missed the opportunity to light up in support of the Canadian women's team.

And, congratulations on a victory that was certainly earned!
