The Pencil Bench

The Pencil Bench, created by Boex on a whim after a conversation about whether everyday objects could be made into furniture, not only makes sitting on pencils fun but also (dare I say) comfortable? It sounds nice and cushy considering each of the 1600 pencils is individually sprung. And, should you need to write something each of those same pencils can be removed and used. Do you think they come pre-sharpened?

The Pencil Bench isn't in production right now, but I have a hard time believing it won't be soon. What a fun accent item in an office at work or home!

Swilken Bench

Those who have visited St. Andrew's golf course in Scotland may see something familiar in this bench - it was inspired by the Swilken Bridge on the 18th green of that course. Made from reclaimed flooring, the gently curved seating surface sweeps across a 70" long expanse, coming to rest on concrete bases at either end. The bench measures 16.5" wide x 18.5" high and can be used indoors or out. Available in solid walnut or maple, it is from Acronym Designs and sells for $3500.

MacKenzie Childs Cakewalk Visiting Bench

I am always interested in how an artist decides upon a name for a work. Some are obvious, others not so much. In this case, I believe the Cakewalk Visiting Bench looks a bit like a well-decorated pastry. Made from Birch, Poplar and Fir woods, there is so much going on with this bench, you almost don't know where to look first. The bench is hand-painted and makes use of a variety of materials, including glass beaded fringe, ribbons, wallpaper, several different fabrics and even some paper. At 64 inches long, it will comfortably seat two and the attached battery-operated candlestick light creates a cozy spot for enjoying a cup of tea with your visitor. $5,200.

E-Turn Bench by Kundalini

E-turn refers to eternity - as in an endless ribbon of gracefully curving fiberglass. Winding over and around, the handmade bench looks good from any angle and the bright lacquered finish sets it aglow. While it doesn't look particularly comfortable, there is no denying that it is striking. Measuring 72.8" long by 22" wide by 16.5" high, the bench is available as shown in white, orange, red or black. $3325.

Scrabble Benches

Even though these are really a custom piece and there is no pricing information, we absolutely love these Scrabble Benches from designer Stephen Reed. They are located in the employee break room at the London branch of Bloomberg financial services. The screen-printed pillows have all the classic scrabble letters, so employees can spell out messages or leave notes. It seems like it would be a lot of fun to have these at home, where you could leave little notes for your spouse in the morning or get everyone involved in a game at a party.

Spirit Song Bench

The Spirit Song Bench has a look that is even more beautiful than its name. Made of teak, it could coordinate with your new barbecue tools, but it is actually made to be eco-friendly (using durable, enviornmentally sound materials) and evoke the rippling of running water. Its unique look won the Design Excellence Award at the International Casual Furniture Show for designers Barbara and Robert Tiffany. There are two versions of the bench available, one straight and one curved. The curved bench is slightly larger and slightly more expensive, but the addition of the curved seat really adds to the flow of the bench in an appealing way. Price: $4,990.
