Chalon Road, Estate of the Day

Today's home is classic Bel Air. This ritzy area of Los Angeles is home to monster homes on their own private hills offering views of the city below. The last time we were in Bel Air, it was to check out a $40 million home. Today's place will cost you a bit less money but is in the same echelon. This fabulous home has been renovated to luxury hotel standards and offers six bedrooms including an expansive master suite and a separate kids wing. This home is suited for a titan of industry with its two-story library, plush home theater and large dining and living rooms for entertaining. The property includes a pool and spa, tennis and gym facilities and a not-a-blade-out-of-place lush green yard. This home is listed for $24.995 million and was recently offered for rent for the astronomical price of $100,000 per month (which is actually less than the estimated mortgage payment would be).

Most Expensive Zip Codes: 90077, Estate of the Day

For the next couple of weeks we will be checking out some homes in the most expensive zip codes in the United States, up today, 90077 . This zip code encompasses the Bel Air area of Los Angeles, CA, some of the most rarified real estate around. This area is home to a wide variety of celebrities and wealthy movers and shakers who enjoy the neighborhood's security and privacy. This zip code has a median price of $3,119,000 with a ridiculously high appreciation rate of 442% since 1990.

The real estate here is truly astronomical. The top house in the MLS is listed at $85 million. Also in this zip code is the Richard Neutra-designed home that Vidal Sassoon has on the market for $19 million. Today's estate sits smack in the middle at $40 million. You only get 3.2 acres here but the home is huge,36 bedrooms in all. Very high ceilings, elaborate moldings, marble everywhere and an overall sense of formal grandness prevails. The land includes terraces with city views, sunken tennis court and a sybaritic pool area. The home has four different master suites and two kitchens.

Singleton Residence, Estate of the Day

A few weeks ago I mentioned the coverage the Real Estalker and Radar paid to this home, a Richard Neutra-designed estate in Bel Air currently owned by hair icon Vidal Sassoon. Sassoon bought the house in 2004 and gave the home a renovation that a house with this type of architectural provenance deserves.

This type of home with its spare and blocky lines may not be to all tastes. You've got to love the Modernist style to embrace Neutra. This home is one of just two Neutra homes in Bel Air (my neighborhood, Silver Lake is home to many more). This home was built in 1959 and has over five acres in Bel Air. Additions include a new master bedroom wing, an expanded kitchen and a gallery that blends the approach to the earlier Neutra addition into the overall floorplan. The home has four bedrooms, a screening room and there are two extra building pads on the site. Radar put the house at $19. million but the Sotheby's listing has it at $25 million. Amazing considering that Sassoon is said to have purchased for $6 million. After the jump, perfect minimalism and a bed with a tail.
