Sweet Dream Beds Introduce Your Child to Home Ownership

We aren't quite sure if we should refer to Sweet Dreams beds as beds at all. They are more like single bedroom dwellings... small enough to fit inside a room... that's inside a multi-bedroom dwelling. The Tudor Style Cottage doll house theme bed pictured has two stories, a slide on the far side and, somewhere inside all of that, a bed. We would not be surprised to find a porte-cochère, stables, and staff quarters around back...

A basic bed starts at $5,500, but that will only get you a castle motif decked out in two-tone paint only big enough for a twin bed. That's enough to give any aspiring king or queen nightmares. Throw in another $5,500 and you add room for a queen bed, a staircase with drawers and a slide, and now you're getting somewhere. One parent spent $40,000 on a custom setup, which is probably enough to keep a few other parents up at night.

There are Sweet Dreams beds for boys and girls, and each is individually designed, can be built to match your existing decor, and hand-painted in any way Cinderella – or Peter Pan – might wish. They might not turn your children into actual royalty, or pirates, but they will probably be good for a few weeks of happily counting sheep...

Incredibeds. You Won't Believe Them, but Your Kids Will

Your child has a lot of dreams: owning a dragon, figuring out how to break childproof things, watching one billion episodes of Spongebob consecutively. If your child also dreams of sleeping on a giant stuffed animal – whether that be a dog or, oh, a Tyrannosaurus Rex, Incredibeds could have what you need.

In the case of Incredibeds, the stuffing of the animal is an actual bed – you simply roll the various parts of your animal of choice over the mattress and box spring. The arrangement comes in five pieces: head, two arms and two legs, and a tail. Currently they'll fit on twin and twin XL beds, and you can add a zipper bumper sheet to protect against accidents. Should there be an accident anyway you can throw the pieces into the washer, which makes them easier to clean than traditional stuffed animals.

For even larger accidents, say Fido has a field day with a tail, you can order any replacement pieces individually. Best of all, Incredibeds says that if you believe in nighttime creatures, their wares will be all the protection needed. Because what kind of monster is going to hide under a Tyrannosaurus, even a T. Rex with a big, toothy grin?

David Stine Woodworking: The Art Of Listening To Wood

Furniture designer David Stine doesn't just design the tables, desks and other wood furnishings in his line, he selects every tree, mills every board and crafts each piece of furniture by hand to create a unique work of art. Stine harvests much of his high quality lumber from his family's own forests in Illinois. He mills the logs at his woodshop, basing his designs on what the wood reveals rather than the other way around. The process is akin to the way artisan gemcutters work with mineral rough, the piece is evaluated for size, angles, etc. so that the maximum beauty of the natural material is revealed. It's no surprise that his work has been featured in Forbes Life and other places and that his clientele includes writer and pundit Andrew Sullivan, Crate & Barrel owners Gordon and Carole Segal and actor and activist Michael J. Fox.

In addition to the limited edition pieces in his portfolio (check out the gallery below) clients may custom order furniture to their exact specifications. All pieces are hand crafted using traditional methods of joinery and construction and environmentally safe finishes. The pine cant bench shown above sells for $1,150.

Spaldin's Soy Beds

Spaldin's Soy Beds
If you live in the NYC area, as I do, you are bombarded with radio and TV ads for Sleepy's, "the mattress professionals." Their never-ending self-promotion and "one-day sales" (until the next one, tomorrow) get on my last nerve. So why am I mentioning them? Because when I walked past a Sleepy's store last week I saw an ad in the window for the Spaldin Soy Bed. A soy bed? Really? I was intrigued.

Turns out that Spaldin, a Spanish company, makes its soy mattresses in four types: Aircell-Soy, Biocell-Soy, Sensitex-Soy, and Memory-Soy. All are made from biodegradable materials that are cultivated without pesticides and processed without harmful chemicals. Read more here.

Quality rest and environmental peace of mind are not inexpensive, however. While prices are not listed on the Spaldin site, this page at, ahem, Sleepy's, gives an idea of the price range of Spaldin beds. Original prices run from $1,400 - $5,000. As of this writing, Sleepy's has all four models on sale. Alas, green costs now but saves the planet for later.

Mantra Canopy Bed

The bed's head board is made of wenghe wood and curves up elegantly over the base of the platform. It was designed by Mauro Bertame based on the notion of fusing the traditional warmth of a canopy bed with the more current designed aesthetic inspired by Feng Shui. The bed is sold as part of a bedroom suite that includes two nightstands and a matching dresser, both of which feature elegant curves that complement the bed. Price: $13,588.50.

Hollandia Brings $50,000 Beds To The U.S.

How mch would you pay for a bed? The Hollandia company thinks that Americans will be willing to pay $10,000 to $50,000 for their sleep systems which are debuting in the U.S. The company has opened its first American retail location in Philadelphia and plans to open other centers in the Northeast.

Why are the beds so pricey? The company says that it is because the company has invested time and money to create the perfect sleep. The bed frame is made from hard-pressure laminates which are tougher than steel and impervious to corrosion or damage. The frame is topped by the Hollandia Vita Talalay Latex mattress which is comprised of breathable latex wrapped in special Aloe Vera fibers that offer soft comfort. The mattress has also been calibrated for maximum sleep satisfaction. A portion of the mattress called the 'Flexible Shoulder Zone' is designed to offer support for side sleepers. The beds are adjustable and have quiet motors that let you move the bed into a variety of positions.

Louis XV Pet Pavilion

This Louis XV Pet Pavilion is only for animals who really deserve to live like kings. It is styled after an 18th century French commode (which we prefer to think of as just a little building, since it sounds a bit classier) and is hand-carved from mahogany and rosewood. It is liken with antique-style Newton Ferrers fabrics and the colors and patterns can be chosen to suit your own tastes. Customizations are available, if you need a larger or smaller bed than the 35" H x 27" W x 27" D standard, or simply prefer a custom finish. Price: $24,266.

This Cube Bed from Ralph Lauren Home will really take your bedroom to a new level. The bed has a leather-upholstered base, with headboard and footboard, and is framed in a brushed aluminum cube, a modern take on a classic four-poster. It also comes with a price tag of $44,995. It would go well in a very contemporary, masculine room, but if light and airy is your style, it's probably better to look at other bedding options.

Emiselene Bed

A post on Trendir led me to discover the unique beds for sale through Europe By Net. They really like the Mantra bed which has a large curving canopy over it but I like the look of the Emiselene shown here. This bed's unique curving design conceals a storage space. It was designed by Luciano Dalmonego and a bedside table and chest of drawers are also available. The bed is made of cherry wood and comes with a fabric cushion roll (a leather roll is available for $342). The bed sells for $4,400.
