Big Price Cut For Devonshire

When I wrote up the Devonshire estate last year, real estate commenter Spectacular Bid warned that it might linger on the market a while. As usual, he was right. The home in Bedford Corners, New York is a grand estate on over 101 acres of land. The Georgian style manor was built for New York banker J.Borden Harriman in 1901and was designed by L. Henry Morgan, John Galen Howard, and D. Everett Waid. Architect and horticulturalist Guy Lowell-who built the Boston Museum of Fine Arts designed the estate's formal gardens. The 21,000 square-foot mansion has an original grand staircase, gold leaf moldings, wood paneling, marble floors and a Tiffany glass domed ceiling. There are eight bedrooms, a formal dining room, solarium, a billiards room and a 10,000 bottle wine cellar. Last year it was listed at $43 million but now it sits at $30 million. Will a $13 million price cut be enough to sell this one?

Today's home definitely earns the title, estate of the day. Devonshire in Bedford Corners, New York is a grand estate on over 101 acres of land. Artnet shows that Architect and horticulturalist Guy Lowell-who built the Boston Museum of Fine Arts-designed the estate's formal gardens. The 21,000 square-foot mansion has an original grand staircase, gold leaf moldings, wood paneling, marble floors and a Tiffany glass domed ceiling. There are eight bedrooms, a formal dining room, solarium, a billiards room and a 10,000 bottle wine cellar.It has been beautifully restored (with the possible exception of the kitchen, which is nice but not exceptional).

The property includes extensive equestrian facilities as well as charming features such as a walled garden, gatehouse, guest house and caretaker's house. The garage is designed for the car collector with room for ten cars, a washing station and a hydraulic lift. This home is listed at $43 million.

Billy Baldwin in Bedford Corners, Estate of the Day

Billy Baldwin has always been, to my eye at least, the most calm of the Baldwin brothers. The other three have spun around in various stages of manic fervor but then there is Billy who has been living a quiet life for many years with singer Chynna Phillips (who sang in Wilson Phillips) and their children. But since Billy got his new gig on Dirty Sexy Money and is spending time in Los Angeles, the family is leaving the suburban life and their suburban house behind. The Real Estalker reports that the couple is selling their New York home. The couple bought this home in Bedford Corners, New York in February of 2005 for $3.35 million. The renovated 19th century carriage house is on 4.36 acres and has five bedrooms.

This is a lovely family home. It's not going to inspire oohs and aahs over the architecture but it's got all the family friendly details like a big dining room for family holidays, a comfortable den for hanging out and a big kitchen with a huge refrigerator and freezer. There is a cute little glass conservatory for escaping the family with a good book and a the yard has a lovely gated pool area. It is listed at $3.895 million.
