Will Madoff's Beach House Be A Teardown?

The Madoff sell off continues. We've seen one of his boats listed for sale and now his Montauk, New York beach house is set to hit the market this week. CNBC shared with us their peek at the Ponzi-schemers vacation pad. The home at 3,014 square feet isn't exactly expansive. The contemporary style has an open floor plan but the rooms look a bit squished. The decorating seems a bit sparse. Leather sections face a stone fireplace and the wood floors are garnished with a smattering of small textile rugs. It's a nice home but it appears to be a bit dated.

One thing Madoff's place does have is a nice 1.2 acre lot with beautiful ocean views and a sense of privacy. Given the propensity for massive rebuilds in the area I'm guessing that Madoff's home might be bought as a teardown and a new grander home built in its place.

To federal regulators last year Madoff valued the house, which be bought in 1979, at $3 million but federal authorities believe it could bring closer to $8 million. The home has four bedrooms including a master bedroom with a private terrace. A small swimming pool overlooks the ocean and there is a private path to the beach. Madoff's belongings are being boxed up and inventoried. Some items such as fishing poles and golf clubs will be later be auctioned off. All proceeds will go toward Madoff's many victims.

Malibu Beach House, Estate of the Day

Today's Malibu, California beach home has a bit of celebrity provenance, this beach home high up on a bluff was once owned by rock star and restaurateur Sammy Hagar. Hagar's former beach house has enviable waterviews. A rustic seaside garden leads to a staircase and the beach below. A sundeck on the bluff edge includes a hot tub and lounging area. The home itself has a funky and distinctive look that harks back to an older Malibu style when it was a surf-driven beach community rather than a celebrity enclave. There are beamed ceilings, a pitched roof, polished teak floors and fireplaces that look like they've seen a lot of use on foggy nights. The home has six bedrooms including a truly stellar master suite. The expansive suite has a fireplace and sitting area and a balcony that opens out to the ocean. The current decor is a bit eccentric in some places. The combination of a pot rack and greenery in the kitchen is the type of decorating move that makes the Real Estalker call for nerve pills. Overall though, this is a beautiful and private abode. It is listed at $10.9 million.

Annenberg Beach House To Open To The Public

This summer you don't have to be rich or well-connected to enjoy a Santa Monica beach house. The Annenberg Foundation and City of Santa Monica are opening the Annenberg Community Beach House at Santa Monica State Beach.

The beach facility will open to the public beginning April 26th, 2009 and on April 25 there will be a public opening celebration that includes a "First Splash" performance from "O™" by Cirque du Soleil in the house's historic tiled pool.

The Annenberg Community Beach House revitalizes a five-acre beachfront property. The house was originally built by William Randolph Hearst in the late 1920's for actress Marion Davies. In the late 1940s, the property was sold and become Oceanhouse, a hotel owned by Joseph Drown who eventually demolished the large mansion but kept the original guest house and pool as well as cabanas and a locker building. It was later sold to the State of California and leased for thirty years to the Sand and Sea Club until the City of Santa Monica assumed responsibility for the site in 1989. A $27.5 million Annenberg Foundation grant led to the site's rehabilitation.

The space now includes volleyball and beach tennis courts, event and meeting space, the Back on the Beach Café, children's play areas, gardens and an accessible boardwalk extending westward toward the ocean. A pool pass will cost $10 for adults, $4 for children and no membership is required.

Sandcastle, Estate of the Day

Many of the houses in Newport, Rhode Island are old classics but not this beauty. Sandcastle is a modern home which was built in 1991. Designed by Bill Burgin, the home has beach and ocean views from many rooms and includes deeded rights to a private resort beach. The first story features large open windows and floors of imported African bubinga wood in a Versailles palace design. The gourmet kitchen has granite counters and stainless steel appliances. The master bedroom has a fireplace, oceanfront balcony and a marble bath. There are three additional bedrooms with marble bathrooms. The third floor observation room has a wet bar and there is a lower level family room with a wet bar. The home also has an ocean-facing lap pool for workouts with a view. This classic summer house in sits on 2.6 acres in the Sagaponack area on a dune overlooking the ocean. The shingled beach house has seven bedrooms spread out over 10,000 square feet of space. There are ocean views from many of the rooms. The home has a gourmet kitchen, living room, dining room and a media room. Outside there is a small pool. The house is listed at $25 million. It has a deep water pier and the exterior features a wraparound deck.
