The $39,000 Diamond Bathtub

This latest bling-encrusted product gives new meaning to the term "bathing in riches". Artist Lori Gardner spent three years creating The Diamond Bathtub, shown at right.

Comprised of 44,928 imported pink crystals (and one real diamond), the 19th century-style claw foot bathtub is currently on sale for $39,000 at Fleur de Lys in Costa Mesa, California.

Naturally, the tub also has a charity tie-in. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to breast cancer research or the charity of your choice.

Are Hotels Ditching the Bathtub?

When is the last time you took a bath in a hotel room? Not a shower, but a real down-in-the-tub bath? I appreciate a good soak as much as anybody, but with the busy schedules we all have, showers just make more sense. And when you're traveling, something most people don't have is all kinds of time to waste in the bathroom. The statistics agree, saying that for whatever reason, only 2% of people ever use the tub in hotels.

Now resorts are another story altogether, but I totally get why many hotels (the Hilton is one in particular) are looking at doing away with the bathtub altogether. What do you think, should high-end hotels continue to offer them just in case, or is it reasonable that they do away with them?

But perhaps you are modest or maybe you just don't like sharing the same water with another person or maybe you like your water to be the same temperature as a lobster cooking pot. Thalassor Baleina Whirlpool Tub

Talk about a great way to relax -- just looking at this Thalassor Beleina Whirlpool Tub makes me feel a little less stressed. It must be the sweeping sculptural tub design, coupled with the raised faucet that makes the whole thing feel a little like you're sitting in a fountain. But most fountains don't have massage jets, hydrojets, and a chromotherapy system that offers 512 colors (that's ridiculous!) for an experience that is absolutely and completely tailored to exactly what you need. Can't get better than that!

Stone Forest Papillion Bathtub

Bring a little contemporary Japanese style into your bathroom with the Papillion Bathtub by Stone Forest. Shown here in Carrara marble, it's also available in Black Granite and Limestone versions. The rounded form and sweeping rim is relaxing and makes me think of gently moving water, and it's nicely both functional as a bathtub and beautiful as a sculpture. And as always with natural marble, each is unique due to individual grain patterns.

Two things I wonder, though, looking at this beautiful tub: It looks like it has a small and rounded base, so is it comfortable to sit in? And it looks just a little too easy to slosh water out and all over the place.

Free-standing bath tubs seem to give the impression of elegance and indulgence because they are made using large quantities of expensive materials and almost always require a very large bathroom. The WS Bathcollection Orion Tub is no exception to these rules. Each tub is carefully hand-caved from natural stone, with a finishing polish or texture added that the end to ensure that each is not only unique, but that the tub looks its absolute best. Lymra and Travertine are the two basic options and the standard size is 75" x 48" x 23.6, although custom shapes and materials are available upon request. Price: $14,000.

Prizma Glass Studio

Our kitchen-and-bath-loving friends at Trendir discovered the gorgeous glass designs of Prizma Studio. Prizma makes bathtubs, sinks, shower stalls and even floor tiles of clear tempered structural glass. The designs are simple and elegant. The only thing that is missing is a glass toilet. I'm not sure I would want one but it would be interesting to see. The Prizma tub sells for around $8,000.
