Audrey Hepburn Stamps Fetch $606,000 at German Charity Auction

A rare sheet of 10 stamps depicting Audrey Hepburn brought €430,000 ($606,000) at a charity auction in Germany on Oct. 16, two-thirds of which will go to educating children in sub-Saharan Africa, a cause about which the late actress was deeply committed.

The sheet of 10 stamps features Hepburn with her typical waifish smile, and a long, black cigarette holder dangling from her lips. The stamps are rare because they are part of a to a botched stamp series that were to have been destroyed many years ago.

The image of Hepburn was meant to evoke her role in the 1963 thriller "Charade," in which she co-starred with Cary Grant and the characters are seeking a set of rare stamps.

Two-thirds of money raised will go to the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund, and one-third to UNICEF Germany.
The German postal service printed 14 million of the Hepburn stamps in 2001 actually showing the actress in her most famous role as Holly Golightly in "Breakfast at Tiffany's. Only after the stamps were printed was Sean Ferrer, Hepburn's son and the chair of the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund, contacted to grant copyright. He refused, arguing that the image had been altered in a way that he did not approve of.

In the original photo, Hepburn has got sunglasses hanging from her mouth, but they had flipped the negative and replaced the glasses with the cigarette holder, Ferrer said.

Ferrer suggested using either the original photo or an alternative, but the postal service ended up scrapping the stamp and ordering those produced destroyed.

Rare Audrey Hepburn Stamps Head To Auction

A rare sheet of 10 German stamps depicting Audrey Hepburn smoking are estimated to sell for a over 500,000 euros when they head to auction today, October 16 in Berlin at a gala dinner.

In 2002 the German ministry of finance decided to honor Audrey Hepburn with a stamp and entered into a contract with the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund (AHCF). The German Postal Service printed 14 million of the stamps in 2001 with the actress as Holly Golightly in the film Breakfast at Tiffany's. But the image which showed Hepburn with a cigarette holder in her mouth didn't meet the approval of the AHCF and Hepburn's son Sean Hepburn Ferrer. The entire stock was destroyed except for three sheets -- one kept by the Ministry, one by the printer and one located recently in a file in the office of Sean Hepburn Ferrer, the chairman of the AHCF. Five missing stamps were sold at auction for between 62,500 euro (£54,700) - 173,000 euro (£151,000) by stamp appraiser Andreas Schlegel over the past six years. The mint condition sheet of 10 stamps will benefit charities through AHCF and UNICEF. A contract Ferrer signed with the German finance ministry earlier this year ensured that the government would not sell either of its sheets until 2040 making this the only sheet that people can buy.

Kooba Audrey Shoulder Bag, Handbag of the Day

Kooba Audrey Shoulder BagThe Kooba Audrey Shoulder Bag is surely one of our favorite Koobas of all time.

The soft, mauve leather is gracefully gathered into a sunburst, accented with berry-colored suede. The 12 1/2"H x 14"W x 5"D bag is adorned with antiqued gunmetal hardware, 13" drop straps and a magnetic button closure. It's also available in grey or black with complementary suede contrasts.

This is an excellent day-to-night bag, as it's big enough for work but pretty enough for Audrey herself. We'd love to see this color paired with a grey or blue suit, or dangling over the shoulder of someone wearing a pretty floral print dress (preferably with a little mauve in it). It's a deceptively roomy, elegantly flashy shoulder bag just made for a women with upswept hair and a pair of pearl earrings.

The Kooba Audrey Shoulder Bag is available from Neiman Marcus for $495.

Valentino Lacca, Handbag of the Day

Valentino LaccaThe Valentino Lacca is a classy bag for a dame of extraordinary style.

The traditional shape of this fabulous bag is turned on its head with a masterful gathering of the black patent leather creating an effect similar to expert-level napkin folding. We love the generous handles and the deep, roomy top-zip body, as well as the classic Valentino logo plate on the side, of course.

This 15"H x 19"W x 6 1/2"D bag is lined in satin and includes a zipper pocket for a little extra organization. This is one of the finest, most sophisticated bags large enough for work we've ever seen, carried off with a supremely feminine flair. It's one of those bags which announces itself with a stately, "I'm important" presence. We could see Audrey Hepburn carrying this just out of frame in one of her iconic black-and-white photos -- it's that glamorous.

The Valentino Lacca is available from Neiman Marcus for $1,195.00, and also comes in a pink so bright it will burn your eyeballs.

Audrey Hepburn's Clothing Up For Auction

audrey hepburnThe world remains inspired by eternal fashion icon Audrey Hepburn. Buyers can sample her legendary style at an upcoming sale that includes 36 items of clothing on offer dating from 1953 to the late 60s as well as hats, belts and accessories. Kerry Taylor Auctions will be holding the sale on December 8 in London.

In 1951, Audrey left Europe for the USA to star in the Broadway production of 'Gigi'. She sorted through her unwanted clothes and passed on the things she no longer needed to her close friend Tanja Star-Busmann. Over time this became a tradition for the stylish star who always travelled with many suitcases full of fabulous fashions. The auction also includes a group of letters in which she describes an early film break, her proposed wedding to James Hanson and the time she spent filming "Roman Holiday".

Items up for bid include a Givenchy-designed black cloqué silk gown for Audrey to wear for the film 'Paris When it Sizzles' in 1962 (£10-15,000) and a Chantilly lace cocktail gown which she wore in the 'How to Steal a Million' in 1966 (£15-20,000). Also up for sale is the ivory satin bridal gown designed for Audrey Hepburn by the Fontana Sisters for her planned marriage to James (later Lord) Hanson. In 1952, while filming `Roman Holiday' with Gregory Peck in Rome, Hepburn approached the Fontana sisters to ask them to make her bridal gown. Weeks later when Audrey called off the wedding she requested that the dress be given away to "perhaps someone who couldn't ever afford a dress like mine, the most beautiful, poor Italian girl you can find." The dress was given to a young Italian girl named Amabile Altobella. The dress will be sold with a photograph of Audrey wearing the original Fontana gown and a letter from the vendor confirming the provenance. It is estimated to fetch £8000-12000.

50 percent of the sale proceeds of lots will be donated go to The Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund. Highlights from the sale will be show at Sotheby's New York, November 21-22 and at Sotheby's Paris, December 1-2.

UPDATE: The sale brought in £268,320 more than double the pre-sale estimate of £100,000.

The movie memorabilia auction at Christie's this week turned out to be a huge success. The top selling item was the black dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's. The dress was estimated to reach as much as $140,000, but far exceeded the estimate, selling for $807,000. This price sets a record for the sale of a dress made for a movie. The money from the sale of the dress will go to the City of Joy Aid charity which helps underprivileged children in India.
