We've been finding all sorts of pricey speakers lately. The latest come from another famed industrial designer, Kenneth Grange, who has designed Parker pens, Kenwood food mixers, the Kodak Instamatic camera and the Wilkinson Sword razor. His latest project is the Bowers & Wilkins Signature Diamond limited edition speaker. The
Signature Diamond is a two-way speaker with a Kevlar midrange/bass drive unit inside a sculpted, cylindrical cabinet. It also has a marble tube-loaded tweeter with a dome of synthetic diamond to deliver high frequencies. The speakers come in a limited-edition of 1000 individually-numbered sets for £11,000.

Cute or cheesy? I'm on the fence about this one. Crosley Radio, which specializes in retro-styled electronics that utilize modern technology, has created the iJuke. It has a dynamic full range stereo speakers, neon lighting, percolating bubble tubes, external speaker outputs and comes with a small remote. It sells for $199.95.

Aluratek Photo Frame Plays Music and Video

I've always considered the digital photo frame to be a rather curious gadget without a lot of functionality but Aluratek has created a new version that doesn't just display your photos but also has 256MB of built-in memory. The photo frame can play background music or video in addition to holding all your photos. It even has a remote control. The 10.5-inch frames let you transfer files directly from your computer. The frame has 1024x768 video resolution and sells for $199. This might make an excellent gift for Mother's Day.

Ferrari Sound with the F80

Is that a really fancy toaster, my companion asked when he saw this thing. Nope, not a toaster. This is the F80 a new project created with Ferrari and Meridian to be a luxury entertainment center. It can be hooked up to your iPod, play CDs or tune in to the radio. But its main purpose is to look good, expensively good. Brit gadget blog Shiny Shiny recently traveled to the Silverstone Racing Circuit to check out this chic little boombox. It has 80 watts of power and comes in the five Ferrari colors of red, yellow, black, white and silver or if you are truly deep pocketed you can spring for the limited edition leather finish. The standard version sells for £1,495 (over $2,900) and the limited edition system costs £1,795 ($3,492).

Cabesse La Sphere Speakers

The massive eye-like speaker shown here is La Sphere from Cabesse. It was debuted at CES in January and at $150,000 for a pair is one of the most expensive speakers around. The four-way co-axial point source loudspeaker is designed to create big noise but as Stereophile reported from CES is can also handle softer sound. The spherical enclosure is designed to help eliminates standing waves and create a more rounded sound. Striking but maybe also slightly spooky since they look like alien eyes watching your every move.

Audiophile Gifts on the Cheap

While still luxury items, these audiophile grade components are good ideas for college students or some one who digs quality sound but may not have the room or ability to take full advantage of Krell monoblocks. Blogger Sandy Greene posted a list of 'affordable' components on Josh Ray's SonicFlare that includes speakers, an amp, and even an iPod interfacing jack-of-all-trades. The permalink on their site doesn't work, so you'll just have to scroll down on the main page or try searching in the speaker category

SpeakerCraft TIME Five Speaker System

Looking at the whole unit, the SpeakerCraft TIME Five Speaker System speakers don't look particularly unobtrusive, but almost everything you see is recessed into the wall or ceiling where you choose to mount the unit. The speaker itself sits flush with that surface until you turn it on, at which point you can rotate the speaker outward, using a remote control or selecting from presets, to create the optimal listening experience wherever you choose to set them up. The motorized speakers turn out from 15-45 degrees and can rotate a full 320 degrees around. Price: $750 per speaker.

Ferrari Audio System

The Ferrari Audio System was not made by Ferrari, but it is endorsed by them and the design team worked with Ferrari to nail down the aesthetics. It is made by David Weiner Ventures' ART.Engine and is a stand-alone system that is shaped like a single speaker. It measures 47 inches tall, 16 inches wide and just 6 inches deep, with a Ferrari logo at the top and a Ferrari engine start button.. As is typical of anything branded with Ferrari's name, the performance is outstanding. It can receive wireless streaming media from, for example, iTunes via a computer with wireless capabilities and can also be hooked up physically to CD and mp3 players. The most interesting thing about the unit, which is being sold in a limited edition of 1,000 pieces, is that many Ferrari owners are buying them and keeping them in their garages, close to their cars. Price: $20,000.

The Vibe headphones come in either black or chrome and sell for $101. They come in a gold leather pouch and purchasers also receive access to "V-MODA modcasts," music and other gear. Disguise Your Sound System with Audiovox

AR Home Decor, from Audiovox, is a line of various covers to camoflague your sound system. Unlike many stereo disguises, these do not take any form of rock or sculpture, meant to be used outdoors, but include clocks, books, vases and wall sconces. My favorite part of the line are the trunks that hold the sub-woofers, because having a large trunk in the room is a good deal more subtle than having a subwoofer. In all seriousness though, the majority of the designs are quite clever and, as long as they match the overall look of the room you want to use them in, can be a great addition to the home.
