Le Mans-Winning Aston Martin That Inspired Bond's DBS for Sale at $1.5 Million

The incredible Aston Martin DBR9 race car (above) that was the 2008 Le Mans GT1 class winner and fifth vehicle overall is a pretty mean piece of machinery in its own right. But the car, which was built in 2006, has an even more impressive item on its resumé: the DBR9's styling lead to the ultra-cool Aston Martin DBS driven by Daniel Craig as James Bond in Casino Royale. Now the iconic DBR9 has been listed for sale in the UK for about $1.5 million. Based on the DB9 road car, the name DBR9 is derived from the original 24 Hours of Le Mans-winning DBR1 car which not only won the 24 Hour race in 1959 but also the World Sportscar title. The DBR9 features custom carbon fiber composite body panels for racing to help make the most of the 600 hp engine along with some other modifications built for speed. The racing history of the car with its famed blue and orange Gulf livery is varied and successful with 3 wins and 2 second places in the 2006 American Le Mans Series, and a win in the FIA GT1 Championship at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps as well.

Aston Martin DBS Carbon Black by Jeff Koons

Earlier this summer my colleague Noah Joseph reported on the BMW M3 GT2 painted by famed artist Jeff Koons as part of BMW's renowned Art Car program. Now it seems Koons has adapted the design to the new limited edition Aston Martin Carbon Black DBS. Based on the top-of-the-line GT that serves as James Bond's ride of choice, the Carbon Black edition features a unique black paint process designed to deflect the light at different angles, plus lightweight carbon-Kevlar seats upholstered in black leather with silver stitching, piano black trim, special wheels and more. We're not sure why Koons' design would be applied over the special black finish, but there you have it. Koons' colorful pattern is meant to evoke "power, motion and bursting energy." The Aston was spotted in the Netherlands and is slated to participate in The Challenge 2010 race at the end of this month.

Russian Owner Commissions Edo to turn his Aston Martin DB9 into a DBS

Before the One-77 and V12 Vantage came along, the Aston Martin DBS was the king of the hill. Just ask James Bond: the DBS is the same supercar 007 has driven in the past two movies. But the DBS wasn't designed from scratch. It was based upon the DB9, Aston's staple V12 grand tourer.

After owning one such DB9 for five years, an owner in Russia wanted to upgrade to the DBS. But rather than taking his GT into the local Aston dealer for a trade-in, he commissioned Edo Competition to carry out its own conversion. The venerable tuning house installed the factory-sourced body panels, customized the interior and upgraded both the brakes and engine, the latter boosted from 470 horsepower stock beyond the DBS's 510 all the way up to 550. The big question, though, is whether the conversion ended up costing the owner more than trading in for a DBS straight from the factory.

Luxist Drives the Aston Martin DBS Carbon Black and Rediscovers Faith

We'll admit right now that we have never been completely taken with the Aston Martin DBS. It wasn't that we didn't like it - on the contrary, it is every bit the fabulous car. It's just that we found the DBS slightly... too much, in the same way you could have too much pampering or too much caviar. Even as you're finding the words to decline the next round of Beluga you're thinking "Wow, can't believe I'm about to give this the stiffarm, but..." It is all about the fact that the DB9, to our eyes, is just right. Nothing needs to be added to it, and as fabulous as the DBS is, it marks the addition of that not-needed something.

Then the DBS Carbon Black came for a visit, so now you can consider this our about-face: the DBS – rather, this DBS – is our first choice in Astons, so much so that we'd only look at the others after driving this one into some shallow, oily grave and then giving up on hopes for its resurrection.

Aston Martin DBS Leather Saddle Case

Aston Martin is offering the ultimate accessory for owners of the awesome DBS, its 6.0-litre V12 powered race-bred two-seater favored by James Bond. The bespoke leather saddle case is designed to fit over the car's rear center console and draws inspiration from equestrian craftsmanship. It features flapped pockets for a variety of gentleman's accessories including holders for two leather flasks or bottles of wine. Each piece is individually handmade by master saddler Robin Coleman who has over four decades of experience at his workshop in Warwickshire, UK, and each one takes 28 hours to complete. Coleman uses an array of tools and techniques that have remained unchanged over the last 500 years in crafting the incredibly rich, supple piece. No word on the price but obviously if you've already got a DBS you can afford it.

Luxist Drives the Aston Martin DBS Volante, and it Gives Convertibles a Very, Very Good Name

When you love the performance of a particular coupe, it's not often that you get to hop in the convertible version and say to yourself, "So... you mean I can have the same thing with the top down?" But in between the tight and relentless esses of Monterey's Carmel Valley Road, that's what we found ourselves debating. What we settled on was this: While the handling envelope of the DBS coupe is excellent, the envelope of the DBS Volante is, well, excellent.

Aston Martin reveals DBS Volante for Geneva Motor Show

When we next see Agent 007 hit the big screen, this car may well be his new ride. After providing Bond with an Aston Martin DBS coupe during the last two movies, Aston Martin will introduce the DBS Volante at next week's Geneva Motor Show. In order to preserve the voluptuous profile of the DBS with the top down, Aston has opted to stick with a fabric top rather than a bulkier retractable hard-top. The top can be stowed away in just 14 seconds even when the car is moving at speeds up to 30 mph. Once the top is down or up, the 510 hp V12 can push the DBS Volante up to speeds of 191 mph! Inside the cockpit the driver and passenger will as always be ensconced in the highest quality hides and veneers. The DBS Volante will be delivered starting in third quarter of 2009.

$37,000 Watch Unlocks Your Aston Martin

Aston Martin and Swiss watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre have teamed up on a new timepiece that doubles as a key to the $260,000 DBS - James Bond's car of choice. The AMVOX2 DBS Transponder, as it's called, locks and unlocks the car much the same way as a remote key fob, though far more stylishly (you'll still need a key to actually drive away). Available as an add-on only for DBS owners, the chronograph costs $37,900 and can be ordered now for October delivery. The AMVOX2 DBS Transponder will make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show on Oct. 4. The watch features "a suspended metallic grey DBS symbol, a discrete Aston Martin emblem on the movement operating indicator and ruthenium grey bridges, satin finish and a black dial that all evoke the DBS's instrument panel," the company notes.

Butts Worthy of Insurance

J. Lo might think she has an ass worthy of insurance, but Aston Martin has one up on her. The automaker's prized asset, the DBS, won accolades for its derriere with a total of 1,260 people who took a survey at the MPH '07 car show, beating out the other fantastic butts of the Jaguar XK, the Audi R8, the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizone and the Bugatti Veyron. Interestingly enough, the women who took the poll were fonder of the Bugatti; however, the DBS won out.

Automotive asses are hardly the new topic of conversation. BMW design chief Chris Bangle's rear-end design was initially ridiculed with cat calls of "Bangle-Butt," then later highly-revered as the new direction for car design.

James Bond's New Ride

Gizmag reports that for the next James Bond, the new Bond, Daniel Craig will be driving an Aston Martin. In the classic movies such as "Thunderball" and "Goldfinger" Bond used to drive an Aston Martin DB5 which was tricked out with all sorts of goodies like a tire slasher and pop-up guns. Since then, Bond has driven all sorts of cars including the Lotus Esprit and the BMW Z3. The last Bond film "Die Another Day" used an Aston Martin V12 Vanquish but for the next film, "Casino Royale" a new top secret car known as the Aston Martin DBS is being developed. It might just be the one reason to go see the new Bond movie.
