Ferndale, Arkansas, Estate of the Day

Today's home is said to be one of the most lavish in Arkansas. Located near Little Rock, the "castle" house in Ferndale is said to be inspired by castles from around the world although it looks more like an English manor house than a castle. It's on 25 acres on a hilltop for panoramic views. The five-bedroom home was built from 2000-2002 and has a pool, sports court, dining room, billiard room and a double staircase. This home is listed at $5.9 million.

Bill Clinton's First Home To Become National Historic Site

Bill Clinton's first home in Hope, Arkansas has been a museum for many years but the museum will become a national historic site as of the first of the year. Clinton lived in the two-story, wood-frame home until he was four years old spending much of that time with his grandparents. After that the home continued to be owned by his family until his maternal grandfather, Eldridge Cassidy, died in 1956. Cassidy ran a grocery store that served both black and white customers, an unusual occurrence in the 1950s South. The Cassidy family moved into the home in 1938 and purchased it in 1946. The home dates from 1917 and was built in the style known as American foursquare.

The museum has been open since 1997 and more than 80,000 people from 159 countries have taken a tour at the home. An article in the Christian Science Monitor says that the site is particularly popular with international visitors. The Clinton Birthplace Foundation bought the home in 1993 and restored it keeping original details including the staircase in the living room. Most of the second floor finishes are said to be original, including the flooring and the beaded board in the hallway and nursery. The foundation has made a gift of the site to the National Park Service. When the site reopens after the holiday on January 2, uniformed park service workers will staff the facility. The status of being a national historic site is expected to bring more tourists to the area.

Anedodi, A Lodge Retreat In Arkansas

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

This summer a lot of people are staying closer to home and discovering the joys of the U.S. You might not think of the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas as an ideal vacation destination but a new eco-lodge in the Ozarks offers lakeside views and some luxury amenities that make vacationing in the land of Walmart a bit more enticing.

Anedodi is designed for families or groups to share a vacation getaway. The lodge on Lake Norfolk has a contemporary style with double rainfall showers, egg baths, and woven circular daybeds. Green features such as dual flush toilets, recycled tiles, reclaimed wood furniture, bamboo bedding, and organic towels are in evidence. Summer on the lake includes waterskiing, wakeboarding and fishing. The local national park has places to hike, rock climb or paddle a canoe. The weekly rate in the high season is $5,995 and includes daily maid service and a fully stocked refrigerator but if you book before July 31 they will take 20 percent off your stay.

Legacy Ranch, Estate of the Day

We are headed back to the South again for a look at another hunter's paradise. Legacy Ranch is actually a hunting business that is endorsed by Orvis as one of the premier Wing-Shooting Lodge Programs. The property includes a luxury lodge that sits on a 160-acre lake with five miles of the Red River and sandy beaches. The land is home to trophy elk, white tail deer and bison as well as turkey, quail, pheasant and wild boar. Legacy Ranch is listed at $14 million but I can't seem to find any information on just how much acreage it includes. Not too many pictures of the 6,000-square-foot lodge at the listing but what there is looks very rustic.

Lake Hamilton, Estate of the Day

I'm interested in today's estate not so much for the style, which is a bit standard McMansion but for the location. This home is located on Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Now if you've ever been flipping through the television channels on a Sunday morning you might have seen one of those commercials with TV stars of yesteryear hawking land in Arkansas. The quest for a place with real estate value lures in many a buyer. Today's home is on the water in Lake Hamilton, Arkansas, a recreation area that is now starting to have clusters of these houses linking the shores. This home is 10,000 square feet with five bedrooms. It looks like the builders might have economized by using the same granite in multiple places. The home includes all the standard luxury details, the kitchen island, the clear glass rainshower, the multiple Jacuzzis and granite showers and televisions everywhere. It also has two capstone gas fireplaces , a glass lighted waterfall and a wine cellar. It is listed at $4.9 million. After the jump, a shabby chic cabinet is an odd choice for the home theater.

Little Rock Castle, Estate of the Day

Castles show up in the oddest places. This one, an old stone and brick manse, is in Little Rock, Arkansas. The home was built in the 1930s and is over 8,000 square feet. The six-bedroom home has a very substantial feel with stone walls, heavy dark wood paneling and monumental fireplaces. The home has been cursed with some pretty awful carpeting but I suspect that there might be hardwood floors underneath. There are two master suites on opposite sides of the house. Another good detail is the circular library/loook out area. The bottom level of the house has a game room, den and a bar/kitchen. The whole property is over 80 acres and has an adorable 900 square foot sotne guest house and stone stables. This historic property has hosted political fundraisers for Arkansas senators been the back drop for a couple of movies. It is listed at $3.9 million. After the jump, the first step is to take out everything green.

Man Finds 2.3-Carat Diamond In Arkansas

Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas is the only place in the world where visitors are allowed to keep any of the diamonds that they find there. You wouldn't expect it to turn out a lot of large stones, but visitors sometimes get lucky and Gary Dunlap of Jefferson, Arkansas was one of them. Dunlap uncovered a 2.3-carat diamond. As impressive as that sounds, it is actually only the 4th largest found at the park in the last year. He named it the Star of Thelma, after his wife.

Other stones recently uncovered at the park included a 5.47-carat canary diamond, a flawless 4.21-carat canary diamond and a 2.18-carat white diamond.
