Luxist Guest Post: Poker Player Beth Shak's Favorite Las Vegas Spots

Poker player Beth Shak gives us her view of Las Vegas in this special guest post.

This year when I returned to the 2010 World Series of Poker for my 5th tournament, I was pleasantly surprised by the accommodations waiting for me. I decided to stay at the five-star Mandarin Oriental Hotel, which opened in December 2009. It is important to note that I did not stay in a suite, because the amenities were better than some of the nicer suites I've stayed in.

The Mandarin Oriental was beautiful and quiet; I didn't feel like I was in Las Vegas after leaving the World Series of Poker.

Highlights:
Push-of-a-button accommodations: the room is completely plugged in, including electronic curtains to hide the gorgeous, lit-up view when it's time to rest.
Amazing closet: This is not just a closet; it is more like a dressing room, completely separated from the actual room.
The bathroom: The bathroom has an entire make-up area, Bulgari products, gorgeous Eastern design and – get this – a flat iron. Nobody does that! I was beyond impressed.
Gamble-free. I was able to sit back and relax, and save the games for WSOP.
The best concierge, Joe: maybe he can move to the East Coast and be my assistant!

Las Vegas Gets Ready For Pool Season

With the economy lurching back to life, Las Vegas might be in for one hot summer. If so the hotels are ready with tempting new pool options. Pools are more than places to escape the brutal Las Vegas heat, they've become resorts in their own right offering drinking, dancing, gambling, spa treatments, internet access and more.

Caesars Palace has created the new Garden of the Gods pool oasis, which makes its debut on March 19. The new Fortuna pool features an 18-foot waterfall where guests can challenge Lady Luck at the swim-up blackjack tables. And in addition to the new pools there are 44 new private cabanas, each with a stocked refrigerator of juice and water, flat-screen TV, DVD player, iPod docking station, wireless Internet access, ceiling fan and plush furniture. The two Bacchus pools are framed by curved staircases and available only to invited guests. Qua Baths & Spa offers poolside treatments and full-service massages are available in the large Jupiter spa cabana.

Steve Wynn's Encore will be opening the Encore Beach Club. The compound will include pools, food and nightlife. At Aria, the Liquid pool offers an adults-only outdoor playground that is topless. At the MGM Grand, Wet Republic's ultra pool is 53,000 square feet and offers a nightlife experience with poolside pampering and relaxation. DayDream, The Pool Club at M Resort is a more than 12,000 square-foot space with cabanas, daybeds, lounging areas, an ice-railed bar and an infinity-edge pool and spa.

The Big Price Drop At Aria At Park Shore

Condos prices in Florida have been falling for the last few years but the luxurious area of Park Shore beach in Naples has been one spot that hasn't been as deeply discounted. Now that's changing as multimillion dollar condos like the Aria on Park Shore are selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars less than their listing prices. The Naples Daily News reports that the overall median sales price in the Naples area has declined 25 percent this year but most of that activity has been taking place on the lower end of the market. It's only been recently that the luxury condos have been seeing the big price reductions. Aria is the final high rise for The Lutgert Cos. on Park Shore beach off Gulf Shore Boulevard and is an 18-story tower with 65 units. Aria includes 13 penthouses. Every condo offers views of the Gulf of Mexico and Venetian Bay. As far as Florida real estate goes, Naples is a pretty good place to go bargain hunting because it is an established area with a history of high real estate prices.
