Get Used to Shorter Spa Treatments (for Now)

The stress of working and living under tough economic conditions is enough to trigger the urge for a trip to the spa. Unfortunately, there just isn't enough cash around to lay out for that perfect facial or relaxing massage. Rather than give up, however, most Americans are compromising. Shorter treatments are becoming more common, as many realize that something is better than nothing.

In June this year, the International SPA Association found that treatments lasting 30 minutes or less grew in popularity. Forty-six percent of the ISPA's 3,200 members reported an increase in these shorter services ... and close to have saw the amount spent per visit fall year-over-year.

Interestingly, there is a changing of the guard afoot among spa visitors. In the past, Baby Boomers were the most frequent spa-goers, but Generations X and Y are starting to see the benefits of relaxation, according to a study by SpaFinder. For many spas, this may require a change in design and treatment menus, as younger guests may not be soothed in the same ways their parents were.

If you live in Southern California and have channel surfed on a weekend morning, you've probably run across the infomericals for the Epione Clinic in Beverly Hills. Dr. Ourian's Epione Medical Center uses lasers and injectables such as Botox and Restylane to create the before and after transformations shown on the informerical. Now Dr. Ourian has created a skin care line. The most expensive item in the line is the Restoration Firm and Fade. It is a skin brightener and lightener that contains an active blend of 2% Hydroquinone, Kojic Acid, Azelaic Acid and High Potency Vitamin C. It promises to improve uneven skin tone, lighten age spots and tighten and firm. The cream, which is meant to be applied nightly, sells for $350.

Amatokin, The Latest Option For Spendy Skin Care

A new pricey skin cream, Amatokin, is coming to the U.S. and making those who are always on the prowl for the next great anti-aging treatment reach for their wallets. The product is on sale at Bloomingdales for $173 for a one month supply. That's far from the kits we have seen that sell for several thousand dollars but certainly expensive enough to make me wonder what it is made of. So what's the secret? The product uses stem-cell technology harnessing the regenerative potential of your own facial stem cells. The product is being marketed by the same people who marketed StriVectin which explains the rather basic packaging. A recent article in the Daily Mail reports that a woman tested it out for French Elle and was quite pleased with the results.

Is Your Shower Making You Look Older?

Should you be afraid of your shower? For years I've heard of celebrities washing their face and hair with Evian. Now several beauty products have been developed to counteract the effects of tap water. Jonathan Antin recently came out with a $95  shower purifier that is supposed to result in healthier hair and there are also products to protect the skin. Dorit Baxter’s Day Spa in New York has created the Facial Shower Shield which is  a cream that is meant to be put on when you step into the shower. A two ounce jar sells for $12.99. Is this overkill or is tap water really making us look older?
