Jaeger-LeCoultre AMVOX2 DB9 Transponder

Filed under: Timepieces / Watches, Luxury Cars & Autos

With digital time readouts appearing on just about everything these days, you need a darn good reason to wear a wristwatch. Style is reason enough if you ask us, but Jaeger-LeCoultre figures the wealthy could use a bit more functionality. Hence the AMVOX2 Transponder watch.

Hidden inside the timepiece is a micro-transmitter that can lock, unlock and locate your car. The watch has already been released for Aston Martin's DBS and Rapide models, and is now joined by the DB9 model. Simply touch where it says "open" on the watch face to unlock the doors, "close" to lock it again or hit both to activate the headlights to help you locate it. Of course you'll need an Aston Martin for it to work with, and another nearly $25,000 for the watch itself. But can you really put a price on feeling like James Bond when you're already driving his car?

Tony Stark Chooses Jaeger-LeCoultre Watches In Iron Man 2 Movie

Tony Stark has two sidekicks in Iron Man 2, War Machine and Jaeger-LeCoultre. The popular luxury Swiss watch makers watch selected as the timepiece of choice on Robert Downey Jr.'s wrist as he played character Tony Stark in the newest installment of Iron Man. In the sequel, when Iron Man is not in his sophisticated mechanical suit, he is wearing a sophisticated mechanical watch. There are at least three different Jaeger-LeCoultre watches adorning Downey Jr.'s wrist in the film. Paramount of which is the new limited edition AMVOX3 GMT Tourbillon watch in platinum. See my other post on the matter for the other Jaeger-LeCoultre watches Tony Stark gets to show off in Iron Man 2 here.

The AMVOX series of watch is part of a partnership between Jaeger-LeCoultre and Aston Martin, but none of those cars are in the movie - as the film features Audi automobiles. Regardless, the style and pedigree of the AMVOX3 fits in perfectly well with the character's technical aptitude, flamboyant demeanor, and preference for mechanical goodness. The only disappointment to most movie viewers is the good looking watch is for the high-luxury buyer owner. At least Iron Man's timepiece is technically within reach as his suit of armor is only available in Hollywood form (for now).

Aston Martin AMVOX5 World Chronograph by Jaeger-LeCoultre

Of all the automotive/watchmaking collaborations, few stand the test as well as that between Aston Martin and Jaeger-LeCoultre. The partnership has yielded an unparalleled range of timepieces. And the two have now teamed up again for their fifth collaboration, the AMVOX5 World Chronograph.

Driven by Jaeger's own in-house Calibre 752 movement, the AMVOX5 packs a column wheel, vertical clutch chronograph complication with a ceramic ball-bearing mechanism that obviates the need for lubrication. It's encased in either ceramic and titanium (300 examples) or 18-karat rose gold (200 examples), and will be joined by two 100-unit limited edition racing versions in the near future.

Up Close with Jaeger-LeCoultre's AMVOX2 Chronograph Racing

Jaeger-LeCoultre and Aston Martin have been together for more than fifty years, ever since Aston won its first Le Mans in 1959 with a DBR1 sporting a Jaeger clock. The two companies began to make the most of that partnership only a few years ago, when Jaeger-LeCoultre introduced the AMVOX1.

The second generation timepieces -- easily remembered as AMVOX2 -- begin with this, the AMVOX2 Chronograph. The vertical-trigger chronograph is the first of its kind to dispense with push-buttons: the timing mechanism can be stopped, started, and reset by pressing on the upper and lower edges of the sapphire crystal face. The chronograph functions can also be locked in position with the 3-position slider on the right.

Other details surrounding Jaeger-LeCoultre's Chronograph Caliber 751B include the red lever mechanism between 4 and 8'o'clock, and black applique numbers on a satin-finish dial that mask the white discs of the chronograph. You can peruse the details of Jaeger's AMVOX2 and survey the five years of timepieces the partnership has produced below.
