Melt Modern Aluminum Splash Bowl

The Splash Bowl by  Matt Proctor and Aixe Djelal of Melt Modern earns its name. The bowl is created by using a sand cast mold with manual 'splashing' of liquid aluminum. Each bowl is formed by repeat splashes and so each one is a unique creation with its own special topography. The fact that the bowl has small holes in it means that it can't hold water but the large version could be a great fruit bowl. The bowl is made from recycled aluminum.  It comes in small, medium and large, starting at $195 for the 9" x 4" version. The Oregon-based designers also create a variety of custom products including room dividers, wall panels and fences that use the same unique melted aluminum theme.

Richard Modern Birdhouse

This modern birdhouse is certainly a cut or two above the plywood, shop-class construction that has been attracting birds to the back corners of thousands of yards across the country for at least the last half century. The Richard Birdhouse is made out of sustainably harvested teak and is finished with a protective oil that will keep it looking pristine in any weather. The floating roof - which is actually attached with metal dowels - is a 1/4-inch thick aluminum plate. Most small birds can fit through the front entrance hole, but tossing a handful or two of seed inside to encourage them certainly couldn't hurt. Price: $195.

Jet Age Furniture

Another great find from the CA Boom show was Jet Age Furniture. The company is the work of two metal-loving childhood friends, Damien Mavis and Pat Arnold who both wound up with degrees in Mechanical Engineering. They have created a line of sleek and simple aluminum and glass desks and tables that are meant to match with Emeco chairs.  The dining table/desk shown here sells for $1995 and would look great in downtown loft. They also sell an aluminum and glass table that can be purchased with separate Tic Tac Toe Xs and Os.

Starck Alessi Salif Citrus Juicer

The innovative designer Philippe Starck has designed this truly unique citrus juicer. It looks vaguely insect-like, as though it might simply walk off the counter if left unattended, but it is simple and elegant at the same time. The juicer does not seem to have gotten the most positive feedback at Amazon.com, where users found the design a bit difficult to work with. Using a long, tall pitcher to catch the fresh juice as it drips down the cast-aluminum, pointed juicer should help things along considerably. Price: $79.

Alu Media Wall

Out of wall space? Can't be bothered to call an electrician to hook up your new plasma screen TV? The Alu Media Wall eliminates both of those problems. It is a cast aluminum wall with a brushed silver finish that has all the wiring needed to hook up a plasma TV - and it can support TVs that are up to 47-inches and 185-lbs. The unit has two shelves that extend outward from the wall. The upper shelf, in the brushed aluminum, can double as a coffee table, but the lower glass shelf is best used for holding media equipment, like a TiVo, DVD player or stereo. Price: $1,258.20.
