Louis Vuitton Offers $10,000 Alligator Wingtips

At an astonishing price of $10,000 per pair, Louis Vuitton is offering what are perhaps the world's most expensive pair of men's dress shoes for Spring / Summer 2010. The Manhattan Richelieu wingtips are finished in waxed genuine alligator skin. Designed to embody the famed French firm's tradition of luxury and craftsmanship with a bit of vintage flair, the handmade footwear features intricate stitching and a subtle pattern of perforations. They are crafted using Blake construction, a shoe-making technique designed to impart immediate suppleness and comfort. The thread is embedded in the outsole, making it less vulnerable to wear and tear. The stylish shoes have a glove-soft leather lining, a Ruthenium-finish metal LV monogram cube embedded in the leather heel and a hand-painted leather sole.

Dunhill Alligator Skin Hiking Boots

Among the entrancing items on display at London luxury goods firm Dunhill's new temporary installation space in Manhattan's Meatpacking District is this pair of striking hiking boots finished in dark green genuine alligator skin. Perhaps not terribly practical for actual outdoor expeditions they're nonetheless extremely dashing. Designed to evoke Bourdon House, the Dunhill flagship in London set in a historic mansion that was formerly the residence of the Duke of Westminster, the installation features key pieces from the Dunhill archives alongside new items from the Autumn / Winter 2010 collection. The collection was inspired by a gentleman adventurer from the 1920s with exceedingly good taste, dubbed the "Radical Englishman Abroad." Just the sort of chap to sport a pair of green gator boots.

John Lobb Alligator Monk-Strap Shoes

John Lobb, bootmaker to British royalty since the 1860s and fashioner of what is arguably the world's finest men's footwear, is offering an ultra-luxurious pair of made-to-measure alligator double monk-strap shoes as part of its Spring 2010 collection. The shoes are made from naturally aged Australian salt water alligator yielding a thick, extremely durable hide that will age better than lesser skins. Glove leather lining, a hand-applied finish, leather soles plied together via a painstaking "sunk by stones, soaked in water" process, and hand-stitched boar fur threads distinguish this as footwear par excellence. A matching billfold is also available. Lobb, founded in 1849, received its first Royal Warrant from the Prince of Wales in 1863. Aside from sovereigns and heads of state, Lobbs have long been the favored footwear of fops including Cole Porter, Cecil Beaton, Hugh Grant and Daniel Day-Lewis.

Starting at $215,000 depending on what exactly the recipient chooses to indulge in, the gift includes: a custom eight-piece luggage set handcrafted by a single Hermès craftsman in Paris from their incredible range of luxurious, exotic leathers (above) including crocodile, alligator, ostrich and lizard, dyed in any of 300 shades; consultation with a specialist from Hermès to create a bespoke suit, topcoat, shoes, and leather and knit accessories, all of which will be made to the recipient's specifications; and a private tour of the Hermès leather atelier in Paris for the recipient and a guest. Some luggage items, like the portable alligator skin bar trunk the firm once made for Sammy Davis Jr., may take up to a year to complete.

William & Son Granted Royal Warrant

William & Son, the luxury goods emporium located in London's elegant Mayfair district founded by William Asprey after his family's business, Asprey of London, was sold off back in the '90s, was recently granted a Royal Warrant to HM Queen Elizabeth II. The firm (which we wrote about last year), offers high-end jewelry, silver, watches, leathergoods, china and crystal, as well as custom-made shotguns and other bespoke services. The Royal Warrant is awarded as a mark of recognition to companies who have regularly supplied goods or services for at least five years to members of the Royal Family. Warrants have always been regarded as a mark of excellence and quality, and are highly prized. Other firms holding the Royal Warrant include Asprey, Swaine Adeney Brigg, Barbour and Laphroaig.

Brooks Brothers Crocodile Luggage & Accessories

Classic clothier Brooks Brothers is making a foray into high-end luxury goods with its new line of genuine crocodile luggage and accessories for men. The ultra-luxe, elegant and understated collection consists of five pieces: a Crocodile Weekender duffel bag (above); matching Crocodile Flap Briefcase; a Crocodile Travel Bag; an Alligator Journal; and an Alligator Eyeglass Case. The last two are finished in fine alligator skin; all the bags feature brass hardware. The Weekender retails for $15,000; the Briefcase for $10,000; the Travel Bag for $3,000; the Journal for $3,000; and the Eyeglass Case for $1,000. Altogether the five pieces come to $32,000.

Hermes Alligator Skin Table Clock

For Only Watch 2009 French luxury goods house Hermès has come out with something a bit different than all the unique wristwatches on offer: a beautiful table clock finished in the world's finest saddle-stitched burgundy alligator skin, over several layers of leather. The 1930s-inspired clock has a stainless steel chassis measuring 175 mm high by 150 mm wide and 37 mm thick, with an easel back also covered in saddle-stitched alligator. It features black nickel indexes and hands, and comes in a red lacquer case. The clock's movement is a Swiss mechanical 8 day power reserve caliber 51 with 15 jewels, beating at 18,000 bph.

Tumi Townhouse Alligator Accessories

Stylish luggage and travel accessories company Tumi has just come out with its most luxurious designs yet: two new additions to its exclusive Townhouse collection finished in the world's finest alligator skin. Slim and sleek, the Parliament Brief (above) bears slender retractable handles and zip top closure and is priced at $13,000. A signature polished nickel clasp closure secures the Windsor Envelope, which is priced at $12,000. The two pieces together cost $25,000. Starting in the fall the cases will be available by special order only. Handmade in Italy, each piece is constructed from the finest alligator skins and lined in supple tan suede. As we reported earlier this year, President Obama carries a black Tumi briefcase.

The luggage, handmade in Italy by the worlds finest craftsmen, includes a document portfolio (above left), briefcase (above right), and duffel bag with gold engine-turned locking mechanisms. Priced separately, the document portfolio is priced at $11,900, the briefcase at $22,500, the duffle bag at $27,190 and the matching gloves at $3,230. The ultra-luxe pieces are notable for the impeccable quality of the genuine alligator skin, carefully selected for its beautiful finish and symmetrical appearance. In addition every element has been crafted from alligator with no inferior leathers used for straps or other parts as with some designers' alligator pieces.

$157,000 Bottega Veneta Alligator Luggage Set

If you travel by private jet, there's no need to worry about your luggage getting beaten up in transit. Hence you can use a set of beautifully handmade cases crafted from the world's finest exotic leather. At least, we assume that's the rationale behind Bottega Veneta's outrageously opulent set of alligator skin luggage. The six piece set, which includes three suitcases (small, medium and large), a beauty case and a duffle bag, costs $157,000; the pieces are also available individually, ranging from $23,000 to $47,000. All are finished in noce fume rich brown soft-finished alligator skin and feature burnished metal hardware with reinforced corners and locking mechanisms. Louis Vuitton Alligator Officer's Jacket

Every season it seems the European fashion houses try to outdo each other with one incredibly decadent item of men's clothing; despite the recession it seems this year is no different. We've seen Salvatore Ferragamo's $250,000 crocodile trench coat and Hermès' $150,000 crocodile pea coat; now here's an alligator officer's jacket from Louis Vuitton's Fall/Winter 2009/10 collection recently shown in Paris. Louis Vuitton mens design director Paul Helbers described the collection as inspired by "the traveling wardrobe of an African king." The jacket has not been priced yet is expected to sell for somewhere in the $50,000 - $75,000 range, and will probably only be available by special order.

Drop In Luxury Purse Sales Means Alligator Glut For Louisiana

Here's one part of the luxury economy I hadn't considered, the alligator farms. It turns out the decline of the "it bag" has reverberations throughout the various industries that feed into the luxury brands. The Houma Today website tells the story of Gerald Savoie Jr., the owner of Savoie's Alligator Farm whose has plenty of alligators and no one to buy the skins.

You many have seen Savoie's Alligator Farm on past episodes of "Dirty Jobs" where Mike Rowe learned about ins and outs of alligator farming. Savoie has over 60,000 alligators but the world's luxury brands like Gucci and Versace aren't buying as many skins as they did in past years.

The Louisiana bayous produce a lot of alligators and the skins are shipped around the world to be turned into belts, purses and other goods. Alligator farms are a $60 million dollar industry in Louisiana. Vermilion Gator Farms Inc. says they generally sell 75,000 hides a year but haven't sold an alligator skin in a year and predict that they may not be able to sell a skin for another year. An article on Abbeville Now last month reported that there are 840,000 tanned hides in the U.S. market waiting to be sold to tanners, a number far above the 275,000 hides generally sold nationally.

Jada Loveless launched her business in September 2006 and has quickly found a celebrity following that includes Kate Hudson, Eva Longoria, Brooke Shields and more Jada's handbags are made from the highest grade of skins and finished with semi precious stone clasps and gold vermeil and they are all handmade in a family run factory in New York. Although the price is high.the Grace clutch shown here is $7,200 at Stanley Korshak, this is not a handbag of a season but of a lifetime.

T. Anthony Alligator Desk Set

In the electronic age the elegant executive's desk set is something of a throwback to a more Mad Men-ish era. In December we wrote about Bottega Veneta's luxe sterling silver version. Now Manhattan luxury luggage and leather goods company T. Anthony has come out with an even more luxurious set in genuine Louisiana alligator skin (above). Available by special order only with a production time of up to three months, the price depends on the market for the exotic leather, but was recently quoted at $13,000. Available in brown with polished gold fittings or black with polished nickel fittings, the set consists of a document tray, blotter, letter opener, scissors, memo pad holder and pencil cup. T. Anthony, founded in 1946, has a rich history of making custom luggage and travel items for the likes of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Onassis.

Ralph Lauren Alligator Driving Loafers

Ralph Lauren is continuing his theme of ultra-luxe accessories in go-to-hell colors with his latest offering for men, the Garda Alligator Driver (above). The classic Italian driving shoe is given a stylish twist in brilliantly-hued genuine alligator skin with equestrian hardware. The loafers come in five colors: Emerald Green, Cherry Red, Marine Blue, Purple, and Black, and are priced at $3,800 a pair. For an additional $920, you can also get a matching alligator skin belt (available in most of the same colors) with an engravable sterling silver buckle. Lauren has also made belts and boots in vivid alligator for women, but it's in the men's items that these colors really pop.
