Win a Zappos Gift Card

Filed under: Handbags, Services, Cosmetics and Fragrance, Shoes, Holiday Guides, Men's Style

Win a Zappos Gift CardWhen Zappos offered Luxist a $50 gift card, I jumped at the chance. I had a lot of fun browsing the site, which started out as a shoe mecca and now includes bags, clothing, housewares, and beauty items. The tough part was making a choice. I gave in to footwear trends and bought a pair of chocolate brown UGG boots, chipping in the rest of the price on my own, of course.

Then I thought, what about Luxist readers? So I asked Zappos if it would offer a $50 gift card to one reader, and the nice folks there agreed. Use the card to buy a gift for someone else, or for yourself. Or just save it until you need something. The card doesn't expire and doesn't incur fees.

Masai Barefoot Technology Shoes -- Dorky Chic?

masai barefoot shoes
Last year I started seeing MBT shoes all over the place. I thought they were kind of dorky (I still do, a little) but they looked comfortable and I figured there must be a reason they were so popular. NYC women, and many women the world over, will forgo comfort for fashion when it comes to shoes. I learned that the MBT craze likely has something to do with the fact that, like the FitFlop, these shoes promise a boost in the wearer's fitness level. And just in time for spring, the line has some new styles. At Zappos, women's styles range from $390 for a boot to $150 for a Mary Jane. For the men, high price is $270 for a tie shoe to $150 for a fisherman's sandal. View women's styles and men's styles at Zappos. See the gallery for a few women's styles -- though it's hard to tell them apart from the men's.

Taryn Rose Carrie Deerskin Satchel, Handbag of the Day

Taryn Rose, known for high-end but comfortable footwear, has a few handbags in its line. I love this one -- I think green is almost as neutral as black. The Carrie Deerskin Satchel features dual handles with a drop of 6.5", lace-up detail, hardware accents, a top zip closure, a platform bottom with feet, and a satin interior lining with a back wall zip pocket and multifunctional slip pockets. Dimensions are 12.5" W x 5.5" D x 8.5" H. $959, but on sale now at Zappos for $575.

Zappos $50,000 T-Shirt

Shoe seller Zappos.com has come up with a unique stunt to prove the popularity of their store. They are selling a $50,000 limited edition "Cease and Desist" t-shirt which comes with a guarantee by Zappos to permanently disable a significant other`s Zappos.com account for life. The "Cease and Desist" t-shirt will be personally hand-delivered by a member of the Zappos Customer Loyalty Team. The listing promises that the rep will also be a shoulder to cry on for up to one hour for your spouse and will "be happy to frolic in a field of daisies with you or do anything that is mutually agreed upon to not be morally or ethically objectionable."

The shirt isn't much of a permanent deterrent. The first disclaimer says that Zappos is not responsible if your significant other creates another account using a different email address. But you can get your money back if you are permanently divorced or separated within 365 days.

Alexander McQueen's Take on Western, Handbag of the Day

I've mentioned Zappos Luxe Life before. Now and then I browse the store to see what's new in the Couture section, and recently I found a bag that I really like for fall. Usually Alexander McQueen is too way out for me, but I think this Western-inspired patent bag is great for the days when you break out the jeans and boots but want a nice bag to polish the look. The burgundy and gold bag is made of of patent leather. It's 14" wide across the bottom, 9.5" wide across the top, 5.5" deep and 10" high, enough room for wallet, keys, sunglasses, lipstick and personal technology. The handle drop is 5". Other features: a front exterior slip pocket, platform bottom, top zip closure and a luxurious interior lining with a back wall zip pocket and multifunctional slip pockets. Comes with a protective dust bag. $2,569; free shipping and returns from Zappos.

Converse Chucks and Purcells With a Varvatos Touch

Selectism recently highlighted the Spring/Summer '08 Collection of John Varvatos amped-up Converse Chuck Taylors and Purcell Vantages. Apparently styles are veering away just a bit from the popular laceless Chucks, although they're not gone, with a return to the more traditional laced Chucks. Varvatos also styled hi-tops and added the Purcells.

This collection features shoe-like sneakers (you won't be playing basketball in these) made from a mix of leather and canvas. Hi-tops are lined in a material that resembles mattress ticking, but with better colors.

Try as I might, I could not find these on the Varvatos site, but Zappos sells a few dozen of what might be last season's styles for between $95 - $145. Converse also featured about the same number of styles, although, again, not from this collection. These ranged from $110 - $145.

Looks like you need to find a Varvatos store to be so very this season.

Thanks, David, for this tip.

The Luxe Life at Zappos

As a longtime Zappos fan, I love the free shipping and returns, ease of ordering and fantastic selection. I knew Zappos carried high-end items, but just discovered its Luxe Life branch. Here you can find couture shoes (natch), jewelry, apparel and bags for women and men, as well as kids' shoes.

Let's do a quick search, shall we? Criteria: women's shoes, size 8, medium width, any heel height, any price, black. The results? More than 530 styles that range from a high of $1,114 for Cesare Paciotti t-strap pump made of haircalf and accented with a crystal vamp ornament to a low of $79 for an adidas by Stella McCartney slide with a rubber sole.

A quick search on boys' sandals (no criteria) brought up 13 styles that range from a $224 Armani Junior sandal with straps for infants (!) and toddlers to a low of $56 for a D&G Junior slide for toddlers.

You can browse by designer, too, that is, if you haven't fainted from sticker shock or spent your whole month's apparel budget on sandals for your children.
