A Look Inside Ralph Lauren's Billion-Dollar Garage

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Wealth

We've written before about the automotive treasures in Ralph Lauren's car collection; now Vanity Fair has gotten an inside look at the lavish garage / gallery the designer recently built near his posh Westchester, NY estate to house them. Lauren transformed a former car dealership's storage facility into a shrine to the best in automotive design, with rooms dedicated to famous marques; the Ferrari room is pictured above, with a rare 1958 Testa Rossa taking center stage. The 60-plus ultra-valuable vehicles are all kept registered and ready to drive anytime the designer feels like going for a spin.

The eye-popping collection includes a 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic worth an estimated $40 million alone – the world's most expensive car – a 1934 Bugatti Type 59 Grand Prix, a 1938 Alfa Romeo Mille Miglia roadster, the world's only 1930 Mercedes-Benz SSK "Count Trossi" roadster, a 1957 Jaguar XKSS, a McLaren F1, a 1929 "Blower" Bentley, a Ferrari 250 GT, and the only Lamborghini Reventon Roadster in the U.S. All have been maintained carefully since new, or restored to perfection – and "sometimes beyond perfection," the magazine notes, as some have been painted in colors that the billionaire decided were better than the originals.

Lord & Taylor Plans First New Store In Over A Decade

A little bright spot of news in the department store world this week. Crain's is reporting that Lord & Taylor will open its first new department store in nearly a decade. It last opened a store in Alexandra, Virginia in 2001. The company is planning an 80,000-square-foot bi-level location debuting in 2012, as part of the Ridge Hill complex in Yonkers, New York.

The Ridge Hill center will also be home to a Whole Foods grocery store, L.L. Bean, Sephora and The Cheesecake Factory. The shopping center in Westchester County is designed like many others recently to have a main street/small town feel. In addition to shopping and dining, there will be a village green that will have entertainment, fountains and a firepit. The complex will also include office and research facilities as well as up to 1,000 apartments some of which are earmarked or over-55 active adults and others which will be low-income affordable units

Lord & Taylor, which is owned by Hudson's Bay Trading Co., also recently announced that it is entering the competitive world of outlet shopping.

The Bedford Post Inn, actor Richard Gere's perfectly restored eighteenth-century country inn (above) located an hour outside New York City near the actor's Westchester estate, has a new chef and some special offers to welcome the fall season. Situated on 14 acres, the bucolic property is home to an exquisite eight-room luxury inn featuring marble baths, fireplaces and Frette linens, two restaurants and a yoga studio. Gere and wife Carey Lowell recently hired Jeremy MacMillan, formerly of A Voce Columbus and A Voce Madison in Manhattan, as the new chef at the Inn, where he will emphasize high-quality seasonal local ingredients at both its restaurants.

MacMillan will offer classic seasonal country cuisine at The Barn, the more casual of the Inn's two eateries, and hearty Mediterranean-influenced American fare at The Farmhouse. To celebrate the season the Inn is offering a number of different packages combining overnight stays with various dining options and yoga instruction, with rates ranging from $295 per night for a basic bed and breakfast experience to $630 per night for the Inn's King Deluxe room with a terrace, breakfast at The Barn, the Chef's Tasting Menu at the Farmhouse and a yoga class for two guests.

July 4 brings a traditional American art exhibit to Boscobel House & Gardens in Garrison, New York. Currier & Ives on The Hudson opens on July 4 and runs through October 11. The exhibit will showcase prints from the 19th-century publishing firm that became the printmakers to a nation issuing thousands of lithographs on a wide variety of subjects. The Boscobel exhibit will focus on Currier & Ives landscapes and views of the Hudson River Valley. These images brought the beauty of the region before a much greater audience.

Currier & Ives prints remain highly collectible but there haven't been many exhibits of the work recently. Boscobel's exhibition will feature approximately 30 prints. The exhibition will be open to visitors during regular business hours and is included in the price of a House Tour ticket which is $16.

Boscobel itself is well worth a visit. The house features decorative arts from the Federal period with furniture by Duncan Phyfe and other recognized New York cabinetmakers of the day. Collections of English china, silver and glass are displayed in beautifully appointed period interiors with reproduction carpets, wallpaper, fabrics, and window treatments based upon contemporary sources. The grounds include an apple orchard, herb garden and a formal rose garden with over 150 varieties of roses on display.

LINCS, the recently-launched sportswear label from Nautica founder David Chu, has come out with a stylish new collection for spring. Images for the new line from LINCS, which Chu describes as "a modern expression of style inspired by a life in and out of the country club - of travel, of sport, of classic chic", were shot at the prestigious Hudson National golf club in Westchester, NY. The spring collection, influenced by the sporty style of both the Hamptons and resorts in Arizona, is divided into two categories – Southampton, which features cool shades of blue and pearl gray enlivened with nautical accents, and Scottsdale, featuring a desert palette of sand tones spiced with brilliant color. Keys looks from the Southampton pieces include this well-cut cerulean heathered linen hacking jacket, and a navy performance nylon blazer vest with bridle leather detailing. Standouts from Scottsdale include unlined khaki pea coat in ultra-light nylon and a coral heathered linen blazer.

Last time I was looking at houses in this region, we found an aging beauty of a Stanford White. Today's find is a bit newer and aspires to grandeur in a whole different way. The circular cobblestone driveway has a three-tier Haddonstone fountain and a two-story entrance hall full of columns and a formal dining room with a fireplace. Other details include a family room with mahogany built-ins and a 60-inch television set, a gourmet kitchen and a large master suite. The lower level is designed for entertaining and has a wine tasting room, spa area with a whirlpool, game room, home theater, sports bar and another kitchen. The eight-bedroom home sits on two acres with a pool, pool house and a fruit orchard and cutting gardens on the grounds. It is listed at $9.5 million. After the jump, playing pool under the circus tent.
