Leibovitz Picks up 30 Days (and Another Lawsuit)

In the ongoing legal struggle between celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz and the art community's financial institution, Art Capital Group, the judge has decided to extend the clock. Though the photographer's payment is still due on September 8, 2009 (Tuesday), the next hearing with New York State Supreme Court Justice Bernard Fried won't occur until October 2. The experts, according to Bloomberg News, are chiming in that Art Capital Group is unlikely to declare Leibovitz in default, as that could push her into bankruptcy, which could cost the lender some cash and control over its own financial fate. Her real estate is estimated to be worth close to $40 million, and Art Capital Group puts the worth of her photo archive at above $50 million ... a bit higher now, thanks to the recent LeBron James shoot for Vanity Fair.

As if a lawsuit in state court weren't enough, Leibovitz may find herself in front of a federal judge, soon. Italian photographer Paolo Pizzetti filed the complaint, alleging that Leibovitz had hired him to take site-scouting photos and then used his product – without permission – in a LavAzza calendar, passing the photos off as her own. Specific sites shot include the Trevi Fountain in Rome and Plaza San Marco in Venice. The calendar was released last October. Pizzetti is looking for $150,000 per infringement and other unspecified damages. The Leibovitz camp has no comment yet, as it hasn't reviewed Pizzetti's filings.

New York City's Skinniest House On The Market

New York City has some unusual real estate but this home requires residents without any fear of claustrophobia. New York City's skinniest townhouse at 75.5 Bedford Street in West Village recently went up for sale. With a width of 98 inches (a bit over eight feet), this home requires a bit of a deft hand with decorating (no giant couches please).

The three-bedroom home was built in 1873 tucked in between 75 and 77 Bedford St. The home is 990 square feet spread out over three stories. The landmark has been home to anthropologist Margaret Mead and poet Edna St. Vincent Millay. The home has been renovated with a garret skylight and oversized windows to offer plenty of natural light that ameliorates the cramped feeling a little. The current owner bought the home in 2000 for $1.6 million and it is back on the market for $2.75 million.

Julianne Moore In New York City, Estate of the Day

Lovely and pale redhead Julianne Moore could probably have no better showcase for her beauty than the cool gray walls of her New York townhouse. The New York Observer's Manhattan Transfers reports that the actress is selling his six bedroom townhouse in New York City's West Village. The home with the red door was built in the late 1800s and has five floors. It has been renovated in a modern style that still allows room for the home's old bones to show.

The garden level has a large eat-in kitchen at the rear of the house and French doors in the kitchen lead directly to a fully-landscaped garden. The parlor floor is given over to two parlors, front and back, one overlooking the street and one overlooking the garden. The third floor is a full-floor master bedroom suite with French doors overlooking the garden. The front room has been made into a massive spa-like bath dominated by a huge tub sitting parallel to a large fireplace. The fourth floor is currently in use as the children's quarters and the fifth floor is a home office and a large media room. Moore paid $3.5 million for the home in 2003 but she has listed it for $11.995 million. It's a charming home but a relatively narrow one with many floors and no elevator in sight.

New York City's Daffy's discount store is far from the most luxurious place in the city but they are offering a pretty unique contest. You can live in a luxury apartment in the West Village for just ten percent of the usual rent. Developer Jesse Keyes was having trouble selling a condo at One Seventh Avenue South so he is renting it out for $7,000 a month. But the winner of the Daffy's contest can rent it for just $700. To enter you need to go make a 30-second video at one of the Daffy's store locations saying why you deserve the apartment. Daffy's will narrow entrants down to five finalists and their videos will be voted on by the public September 7 through September 16. The winner will be announced on October 1 and will move in then for one year. Daffy's is also opening up a pop-up shop in the building's vacant retail space. More details are available on the Daffy's website.

Kristen Johnston Lists Her New York City Apartment

Comedic actress Kristin Johnston was recently signed to a stage production at the Lucille Lortel Theater this fall so she's not leaving New York City but she may be leaving the West Village. Cityfile found the listing for Johnston's condo. Her colorful duplex measures 1,541 square feet and has two bedrooms. As the listing puts it, the best part is the solarium which enjoys a south-facing view of the planted terrace and has built-in seating and glass walls. In the main space a dining upholstered banquette seats 10 and the kitchen has an open counter to the living room. The style is a bit eclectic and busy with a hodgepodge of wallpapers and clusters of vibrantly-colored accent pillows. It is listed at $1.795 million.
